Cleveland Indians (2011 Season)

you do realize that buck, kearns and duncan were all signed to minor league deals right? they weren't necessarily signed with the intention of being every day players. it just so happened that grady and choo have missed substantial time combined and nobody in the minors is worth bringing up.

And? My point is that's pretty much the extent of their FA "successses" in recent years...they have done nothing to give the impression that if they think they will contend, they will magically be able to sign better role players or even a starter who is halfway competent. They've stockpiled some decent prospects...their FA record sucks balls.

this would be true if you ignored 2008, when the team had one of the higher payrolls in baseball when they thought they would contend, until the team shit the bed.

I guess I'm not seeing how a team with FAs shitting the bed disagrees with my point...I'm not speaking of their unwillingness to spend money as I am on the actual quality they get for that money. High payroll doesn't mean much if the team sucks ass...guys can make the league minimum and do something useful for the club...or they can be Kerry Wood.

right hander in the pen ready and acta leaves sipp in the game to face right hander mo pena, then he nearly balks, and then the game winning HR...acta's decisions on pitching changes is getting fucking irritating

except for mark derosa, who they paid a nice chunk of change to as a quality FA pickup in '08, and ended up netting chris perez and jess todd in a trade. and, instead of using cash to pay big time FA's after '07, they used the money to resign westbrook and pronk.

DeRosa came over in '09 (well, I guess maybe they signed him in winter-'08), but he was actually quite productive on a bad team before they dealt him and, as you said, netted our current closer...so it was a good signing.
