Cleveland Indians (2011 Season)

I will defer to the more knowledgeable posters here and ask, why in the hell is Santana still batting cleanup? It seems to me he attacks every at bat the same, and every count the same.
the reason he is still batting cleanup is because they do not want to hurt his feelings and who the hell else are we going to put there. I mean at least he gets at least one walk per game and has probably more than anybody else on his team. We really don't have a cleanup hitter. Actually, we don't have many hitters at all.

Yeah, that question is a good one but is only about 5th on my list of questions of WTF Acta is thinking. The first of those of course is what kind of Whitney Houston Meth binge was he on when he thought it would be a good idea to bat OCab 2nd, ever, in any lineup against any pitcher. Why is/was Choo still hitting third is another, as is why is Kearns ever hitting (OK, batting) at all. I could throw Christmas tree ornaments at Kearns and he would never hit one. The trouble is early in the season ACab was getting on base all the time and Hafner was eventually driving him in along with Santana when he walked once a game. Plus Hannahan was not hitting like, well, Hannahan and Brantley was hitting well down in the lineup, so you basically had crappy guys in the middle but guys hitting well at both ends. Now we have no one hitting anywhere, except maybe Brantley at the top and ACab, who he moved down to move the human double play up to hit second. Ideally Sizemore would hit over .200 and be able to play more than once a week, but even then the question is where to hit him...1? 2? 3? Brantley seems to like the 1 hole, and ACab was killing the 2 spot, so why move them? Still, that leaves no one qualified to hit 3-5 and LaDillhole and Hannahan not hitting at the bottom anymore either, and Lou Marson remembering he wasn't supposed to hit over the Cleveland Area Code.

Yeah, basically they're still shitty, especially if Hafner can't come back and hit.

I think that the Indians might be building for the year 2020 as they dipped into the high school ranks in the second round of the draft.

The Indians selected Dillon Howard, a right-hander from Searcy (Ark.) High School, in the second round (67th overall) on Tuesday. The draft is in its second of three days.

Howard made it two prep players in a row for Cleveland to open the draft. Shortstop Francisco Lindor, from Montverde (Fla.) Academy, went eighth overall Monday.

Here is MLB.com's capsule look at Howard:

"In past Drafts, there would only be a small offering of high-ceiling, projectable high school pitchers with good velocity to choose from in the first round. In 2011, there's some depth in that category. Case in point is Howard, who doesn't rank up with the prep arms being mentioned near the top of the Draft, but isn't far off, either.

"The Arkansas product has a fastball that will be plus, touching 95 mph at times. It's not straight, either, with both sink and run to it. His hard curve, 78-80 mph, is a little slurvy now and is fringy average, but it's got some depth to it and will be more than fine. He's even got a good feel for a changeup, an offspeed pitch that should be a Major League average pitch as well. With a clean delivery, decent overall command -- not as much with the curve -- and the chance to have a solid three-pitch mix, Howard looks like he's settled firmly into the first round, unless signability (he's advised by Scott Boras) becomes an issue.''
continued

Their third-round pick was a college pitcher and in the fourth round they selected a catcher from James Madison.

Draft

I would have liked them to use their top 2 picks on college pitchers to give me some hope for the near future. As good as their #1 pick will probably be it is going to be a while before he is major-league ready and the same goes with the second round pick.

im all about them taking the best player available regadless if he is in high school or not...we are stockpiled in the minor leagues with talent so drafting projects is not a bad thing...and you never know maybe one of these high school kids could turn out to be another justin upton and cruise thru the minor leagues

Indians purchased the contract of INF Cord Phelps from Triple-A Columbus.

As expected. Phelps, 24, was batting .299/.391/.488 with seven home runs and 40 RBI over his first 248 plate appearances at the Triple-A level this season. It's not immediately clear what role he'll have with the big club, though second baseman Orlando Cabrera and third baseman Jack Hannahan have struggled after quick starts. The switch-hitter has a chance to be a solid utiliyman, at the very least.

shelly duncan was sent down...also phelps is in the starting lineup and will be batting 7th
