Cleveland Cavs (2016 NBA Champions)

Thomas can do many of the same things as Irving, but I don't think you stand a chance of beating Golden State with Irving Lite. I'd try to move Thomas for Bledsoe. At least Bledsoe makes us more interesting defensively.

This is a pretty good way to look at the Kyrie trade.

I'm pretty sure that the Cavs will package that Nets pick plus Shumpert and/or Frye for another "star" player, preferably a decent 3-and-D guy and/or an athletic big man. Or maybe Kevin Love plus the pick gets you a true superstar who might be a be a better fit against the Warriors. If they can pull off the right trade, then they will legitimately challenge the Warriors this season.

SF: Jae Crowder
SG: Kyle Korver
PG: Derrick Rose
SF: Richard Jefferson
PF: Jeff Green

I'm intrigued to see what they could get for Love and the pick, but at this point, I just don't think it'd be enough to beat Golden State. I think that bench unit is truly abysmal, too. They'll be fine during the regular season, but that's a group that won't hold up against Golden State.

I think we reevaluate our expectations of Jae Crowder. He's an average three-point shooter with above average defensive skills. Don't kid yourselves into thinking he can guard Durant, though. Crowder isn't the same guy as he was when he entered the league. The Celtics have been trying to move him for six months. Think of him more like Boston's Shumpert.

So you would rather wait for that Godfather offer that they obviously haven't been offered and have a guy who, while he wouldn't play bad on purpose, has made it clear he doesn't want to play for your team? All this while you are also trying to convince the best player in the world to stick around after this coming year?

Everyone has an opinion and that's what makes sports great. The drop off from Kyrie to Thomas is worth getting Crowder and the Nets pick when you factor in the situation Irving put you in.

And yes, picks don't always work out. The Cavs also don't have to make the pick. They could use it to trade for their own stud player that would help keep Lebron around.

I would, yeah. I'm about 80% sure that LeBron leaves after this season. If Kyrie can handle one more year of LeBron, they'd have the option to build around him in a year, instead.

If Lebron leaves there isn't a point of building around Kyrie. This team has completely sucked when Lebron isn't on the floor ever since he came back. It will be interesting to see what Kyrie looks like dominating the ball without Lebron on the other side of the floor. I'm sure his scoring will pick up, maybe he'll get in the MVP race, but I don't know if the Celtics have what it takes to beat the Cavs in the East this year and definitely not enough to beat GS in the foreseeable future. Also Kyrie has an injury history. Who knows if he can hold it together when he has to be the #1 guy.

It isn't like the Cavs have cap space to make any moves if their core is Kyrie and Love. That team might be good enough to squeak in the playoffs, but not bad enough to get good draft picks. You make this move to get unhappy Kyrie out of town and get a good future asset. Maybe they can turn IT around to another team for a PG that will be a better matchup for GS. IT might have been the 3rd leading scorer in the league last year, but he'll probably get half the volume in Cleveland. The Cavs need an athletic PG that can bring the ball up, make a high % of 3's and play great D.

It will be an interesting season, but I really get the feeling this is it for the Cavs as we know them. After this season they have all their first round picks (top 10 protected) so as long as they don't trade future assets they have a chance to rebuild while GS dominates the league.

Also, let's not forget that the Nets pick is an asset to be parlayed into a known commodity now rather than a player who might develop down the road. The Cavs are not interested in entering rebuilding mode. The goal is to keep Lebron (who doesn't really have any viable options other than the Cavs) and continue to build a championship caliber team a around him.

Right now, here's the Cavs' line-up:

-C: Tristan Thompspn
PF: Kevin Love
SF: Lebron James
SG: J.R. Smith
PG: Isaiah Thomas
----
SF: Jae Crowder
SG: Kyle Korver
PG: Derrick Rose
SF: Richard Jefferson
PF: Jeff Green
----
SG: Iman Shumpert
-C: Channing Frye
----
Misc: Ante Zizic, Cedi Osman, Kay Felder, Jose Calderon, Edy Tavares

The starting five doesn't change much with Irving for Thomas. The bench gets a lot better with the addition of Crowder. The key will be using current assets to get one (or ideally) two more key pieces - someone who can move Jefferson and/or Green out of the rotation.

An interesting side note: In 2018, the Cavs would need to spend nearly $400 million to sign both Lebron James and Isaiah Thomas to 5-year "max" contracts.

I'm just excited The Miz is the voice of wisdom here.

I don't envy the young GM in January when Gilbert is saying keep the pick in case LBJ bolts and LBJ is saying if you don't trade the pick to get someone else I am leaving for sure.

Best trade available, though.

All while LBJ won't commit to staying so his options for a bonified difference maker to trade for will be none.

Cavs are getting praise galore from what I'm hearing/reading this AM because it seemingly helps now and the future. Just hope it pans out.

This is why I can't understand how some don't think the Cavs did well with the trade they did make? If that was a "close" offer and the Cavs had done that people would have freaked out.
Exactly. Would much rather have Thomas and Crowder ( even if Thomas only stays a year) over those two. And that Brooklyn pick is better than anyone else could offer.

That's kind of crazy talk, no? Not the report, just that the org would feel that way. Then again, Gilbert has been a bit of a over-involved dunce as an owner at times. Kyrie is a damn good [offensive] player. Best handles, good jumper.

And I'm going to miss those Kyrie layups/finishes. Best in the league and one of the best ever. I won't miss the ball sticking in his hands.

The Boston Celtics have acquired All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving from the Cleveland Cavaliers for point guard Isaiah Thomas, forward Jae Crowder, center Ante Zizic and Brooklyn's 2018.

I am seeing a big opportunity for the men in green now to dominate this new season and make their way to the finals.

I began to look at the trade in a more favorable light today, but I am concerned about the Brooklyn pick. Brooklyn's roster is better, they have no reason to tank, and the Lakers, Suns, Bulls, Pacers, Magic, and Hawks may all tank. It still shouldn't be worse than #8 or so, but the pick's position is worth thinking about.
