Cleveland Cavs (2016 NBA Champions)

How do these trade exceptions work?
are they like a bargain chip you can use like bitcoin?

Short answer as I understand it they basically work like a player with a non guaranteed contract, but can't be packaged with another player to make a deal. i.e. they couldn't package Shump and Andy's trade exception for someone making 20 mil. All they could really do is package picks and I think rights to players for someone less than or equal to the exception that they have. That pretty much requires that the guy they get is trying to get dumped by his current team since the Cavs don't have picks to trade at this point. Probably get better value waiting for someone to get bought out near the deadline. The difference between a Joe Johnson and a Dunleavy. As long as they sign JR I think the depth is fine with Birdman taking minutes at backup C. I'd like to see Love get some time at the 5 each game since they will need some of that in the playoffs.

I like the bird man deal. He was solid in Miami, and I think he's young enough to be able to give 100% for 10-12 minutes and not be a big drop off from TT. Plus he is reliable in big games and I'd feel great with him in there for 10 minutes in a finals game 7. He can give 10 and love will likely play 5+ minutes at the 5 per game. That's really all the rest TT needs. We needed two things going into this year, a solid backup at the 5, and a solid backup that can play the 1 or 2 and can drain 3s. Still not confident we have the latter. But we have the exception, and I hope to see a shump trade to get us some reliability there. I just feel like he couldn't handle the moment and made a ton of mistakes in the finals after a solid year.

Jon Diebler is tanned, rested and ready.

I don't see Shump going anywhere. He just needs to focus on what the Cavs need out of him instead of the player that he wants to be. They need him to focus on being the best defender on the team and finding a spot on the floor that he can be a knock down 3pt shooter. He needs to give up any idea that he has of being a ball handler. That is where Delly was great he knew what he could do and rarely tried to be more. They need Shump and Mo to take over Delly's minutes. The wild card will be if Felder can come in and earn minutes.

I agree. We need Shump. He needs to come up big.

He is young. He is an explosive athlete. He has a nasty streak.
Traits we need.

There is no reason he can't become a maniacal defender.

His minutes in the finals show the coaches agree with you. The results in those minutes left me concerned, but the coaches kept him out there. He was a terrible ball handler in those games, but decent defender, and drained some 3s (a lot of way off the mark shots as well)

My concern about Shump is health... when he's healthy, he's awesome... but in the last 2 years he's been hurt more often than he's been healthy
He'll play with injuries.. problem is.. it shows up in his play

Funny thing, is all you hear from GS fans is how the NBA is rigged and they influenced the outcome. Before you quote my post after about Game 3 (I think), let me say this. The refs were god awful for most of the series, they did have a few bright spots, and I thought Game 7 was their best officiated game. Good, but weak teams allow questionable officiating get the best of them. They couldn't have expected 7 straight games of favorable calls. The great teams are the one's who continue to push through the questionable calls, and continue moving forward. Game 4 really got to Golden State, and they were never able to shake that. (And they won that game)

Weak teams rely on refs to get them through the rough stretches. That's why I have no doubt that Golden State will not be winning the NBA Title next season. They are weak.

Caught a bit of Summer League game v Lakers.

Felder and especially McCrae look legit.

I could see McCrae getting meaningful minutes.
He can flat out score.
He had 61 in a D league game last year. 36 in the last regular season game and is dominating the summer league.
I posit he has a future in the NBA. Get buckets to quote Uncle Drew.
