Cleveland Cavs (2016 NBA Champions)

The Cavs are looking to trade Haywood and Varejao for Joe Johnson. It gets Varejao's nasty contract off the books, but Johnson is set to make 24 million next year. And he's already 34 years old. I'd rather the Cavs looked in another direction.

I think it would be a decent move. After next season he becomes an expiring contract - a massive one - and therefore an asset. Let's face it, he's also a talent/production upgrade over the guys named in that proposal.

Let's face it, they're not going to be able to bring in a young guy with a Haywood trade.

I like Varejao backing up Mozgov so that we have some kind of offense coming off the bench. Unlike Thompson.
Johnson would finally give us a decent backup for Lebron. Johnson shoots a career 37% from 3. Same as JR.
I would hate to lose Varejao though, would rather give up JR and Miller or Harris.
Even by getting Varejao, Nets are basically giving up Johnson for nothing. Varejao is just a backup C with limited minutes now.

Even sliding Johnson down to SG, he would be a great fit with Lebron as he camps the 3P line.
I'd be happy just to get Mo as a backup PG...that's my biggest concern.

@NJ-Buckeye If we could get Johnson, Mo, and West...I'd be impressed. We would have to use the MLE for Mo, West would have to take the Vet Min

I wrote it down so it has to happen...
Nets are in a tough spot.. repeat cap offenders.. so the deal on the table supposedly saves Nets something like $20M....
I'd expect Nets end up paying half the salary or a portion thereof (Soc Sec will offset some too)
Mo & West wanna come cuz we're kool
Shumpert "you don't buy jewelry in the NBA.. you gotta earn it"

It has to be Varejao because of his 10 million dollar deal next year. JR isn't signed, and Miller and Harris don't make nearly that much money.

Varejao + Haywood is the only way the trade works salary-wise. Joe Johnson makes $25 million this season. I'd hate to lose Varejao and I want to see him win a ring in Cleveland, but if that's the best trade on the table, they'd have to pull the trigger.

OK.. so we trade Varejo & Haywood for Johnson.. then the Nets cut both of them (and pay Andy off) who then turns around and signs with us for vet max..
see how easy these deals are

I read that that loophole was closed in the most recent CBA.

I wonder how long that lasts? Say Andy signs with someone else this year, becomes a FA in a year, can he then sign with the Cavs or would he be banned for the original length of the contract? Big decision for GM Lebron. Do you give up one of your guys in order to bring the piece that would probably put you over the top? Honestly if they could trade BHC and Andy for Johnson, West with the MLE, and bring in a backup PG like Cole for the min they might be the best team in NBA history.

I don't really get why the Nets would make that move. With the 2 years on Andy's contract they don't really get out from much with Johnson. Andy gets 20 mil over 2 years or Johnson gets 25 mil in one year. The Cavs don't really have other pieces to send along in the deal.

Repeater tax penalty. I've read that moving Johnson and only taking back av would save them nigh on $50 million this year alone.

Actually it's pretty simple... he has ALWAYS been one who treasures interpersonal relationships..
still bonded with friends from grade school and high school... in a huge way.. select few are lifetime friends..
this one will be interesting because Andy & Zydrunas Ilgauskas were considered his closest outside of D Wade, Melo and Chris Paul

mixed feelings about Andy... he deserves to be part of a ring...
but personally I don't think anyone comes back from a Achilles tear completely... (and very probable re-occurrence) plus two more years of $9M...

Would JJ possibly renegotiate his contract any to come to the Cavs? If he would trim that down to closer to $20mil it would be a no brainer.

Mixed feelings about Andy. He's worked his butt off while he's been a Cav but that injury pretty much ended his ability to go balls out like he usually does and he was already injury prone. Maybe he takes a pay cut to stay with Cleveland? Dont know how else he can make it work and stay here.

No one is talking about Raheem Christmas at all but I have a feeling he's going to surprise and make this roster. He's a better shooter than the other bigs, maybe Mozgov, and with his reach and athleticism he's a defensive terror in the paint if he can stay out of foul trouble. Coming off the bench though he should be able to do work for 3-5 minute stretches and rest the other bigs. Dont sleep on him

Best bet would be a buyout and come back in the front office for a year to get the ring. If Andy felt like he could no longer play or at least not this season there isn't much thought. Trade him then make him the Director of Latin American development or something. He gets the rest of his gold watch contract regardless if he ever steps on the court. If the Cavs trade for Johnson I think it puts them at the top of the NBA and probably makes guys like West willing to take the min for a ring. Johnson would also fill the need for a 3rd PG since he could help handle the ball when Kyrie or Lebron sit. I would love the depth chart if they did get both of these guys since you could have at least 3 of Lebron, Kyrie, Love, Johnson, and West on the floor at all times and it only becomes a problem if they try to go small or have to put in a defensive lineup. If you look at the Finals I think the roster would work if GSW tries to go small with Love, TT, and West splitting C against Green and they could probably stay big with Love and West stretching the D. If it was the Spurs they could stay big with TT/Mozzy against Duncan and Love/West on LMA. This week should be interesting.
