Cleveland Browns (official thread of Masochism 2015)

The design that Pettine has created - run the ball effectively, own the LoS; Play solid yet opportunistic on defense, utilize field position and don't turn the ball over - Tresselesque performance at its finest.

THAT is how you win with Manziel under center in this early stage. Do not give him enough passing attempts to make too many mistakes.

Can't argue with that...if they played bad teams every week. However, they're gonna find themselves in situations where they're going to have to come from behind, and HAVE to throw the ball. The run defense is still bad, and when they face a team that can run the ball and control the clock, Manziel's weaknesses will come roaring to the forefront and they can easily find themselves on the wrong end of an epic beatdown...fairly frequently. Also, I'm still not sold on Crowell or Duke (individually or as a duo) as legitimate options to lean on to establish a consistent run game.

In other words, it was nice for them to get a win against what should be a pretty bad team, but we've all learned it's foolish to glean too much from one respectable performance from this shit stain of a franchise. I still think they're a looooong way from being a viable threat to challenge for the playoffs, and for a franchise in its 16th year of "rebuilding" that's both sad and comical.

I know I am the ultimate "doom and gloom" guy when it comes to the clowns. But, this franchise has failed HARD for the better part of two decades now with numerous stops and starts when it comes to showing any kind of consistent/sustained improvement. I didn't even get sucked in to that 6-3 start last year, because it was obvious there were weaknesses to be exploited, and it was a matter of time until they were exposed. When will I believe they're on the "right track"? Well, I guess when they actually get to the damn playoffs or post a winning record and don't fall off a cliff immediately the following season.

Or, just opportunistic. Dear Browns, that guy that the QB just gave the ball, that's called a r-u-n-n-i-n-g b-a-c-k. Tackle him. Thanks.

-AKAK, speaking slowly so they can understand better, live from the bunker, day 2.

First, I would like to thank the 49ers for giving us Andy Lee. Farmer must have been out of the building one that trade was made.

I certainly disagree with the approach that Pettine took in the second half with almost exclusively trying to run the ball and play solid defense. I know that is how he wants to play but until we get a solid running game and defense I think you have to try some short safe passes on first or second down. I know that might not be anything called safe with Johnny at QB but if he is going to be the future you have to take the chance. I think that Pettine's strategy almost causes the ballgame. We went from 21-0 to 21-14 with that strong running game.

I am beginning to wonder if Alex Mack will get picked for the Pro bowl this season. Half the time he was in the Browns backfield because of the Titans NT. He almost tackled Johnny on one play he got shoved back so fast it was scary.

I think Tennessee is very lucky that they play in the AFC South were defenses are not very strong because I do not think that Mariota would last the season playing in any other conference. He might not last season anyway with their OL.

There was a lot to worry about that game, beyond the euphoria of seeing more points on the board at the end...Mack got Rick-rolled on a quarter of the plays, our run D made Dexter #%&# McCluster look like Eddie George, the push for the running game was only so-so when they were ahead...and Johnny Turnover still fumbled twice, they were just lucky enough to get them back. Even guys like Bitonio were getting whistled for penalties and missing blocks. Any NFL win is a good win, but the warning signs are still there. Oh, and you can hit one of those pretty bombs on a lot of teams, but I can count on one hand the number that will give up two.

IMO the clip on Bitonio was BS and he got a makeup call the next play. He was in front when he went for the cut and the DL spun back into the block to make it look like he got him from the back.

They are trying to build up Manziel not throw him to the wolves. He should be feeling pretty good about himself now, but chances are the longer he stays out there the more defenses will be able to get ready for what he does and make him look bad. The Browns won't be lucky enough to fall on all his fumbles going forward. The longer they can keep McCown as the starter the better it will be for Manziel to develop. Your average Browns fan is pretty stupid and sees Manziel like he's a Ferrari that is being kept in the garage. Pet knows that starting Manziel right now will only get him a pink slip at the end of the year when the Browns are 2-14.

McCown made it a series in the first game so the odds are 50/50 that Manziel is called into action Sunday.
