Cleveland Browns (official thread of Masochism 2015)

Surely the browns can't be this stupid ... if what he's implying is correct (aka Ricky Williams/Hershel Walker type deals)

Ian Rapoport @RapSheet
How much do #Titans want for the number 2 pick? So much that it makes teams involved think they just want to take Marcus Mariota and be done
You must be too young:biggrin: to remember a trade for Ollie Matson. Talk about trades..

I am really up in the air about Mariota. I have no idea how he is going to turn out in the NFL but I almost agree with Mary Kay and her article this morning on Cleveland.com. A NT or OL or any other position is not going to help the Browns wwin a championship anytime soon except for a franchise QB aand I do not know if MM is going to be a franchise QB or another bust.

To me, it's pretty simple. The Browns have many needs (and have had this problem for some time now). The big problem seems to be is they try and get cute in the first round instead of picking smart and they do reasonably well in the later rounds of the draft. They have 2 first round picks this year and while MM is a great character guy and is the anti-Manziel, I do not see him as a can't miss prospect. Could he florish is the right system? Absolutely. But he is not a fit for the Browns. I would not trade for Sam "Fucking Torn ACL two years in a row, won't sign an extension with Cleveland, blew my shoulder out in college" Bradford. Fuck him. With that said 2 scenarios I hope play out:

Most likely: 1. (12) Danny Shelton; (19) Ereck Flowers; 2nd round - Jalen Strong

OR

Would be more happy with: 1. (12) Devante Parker; (19) Danny Shelton or Malcolm Brown (who ever is available); 2nd round - Jake Fisher

All positions of need and makes the team better overall. I would be happy with either "1st 3". The Browns have a foundation and need to build on that but there is not a true "franchise" QB in this draft with the possible exception of Winston. All have question marks. They would be better off going after Grayson or Petty (system QB) in the 3rd (if they are there). They have the picks to move around in this draft and even next years if they choose to but to trade for either MM or Bradford would set them back even further.

There's only 2 ways this will go...either boring but productive (Shelton, OLB, OL) or full big splash retard. One or the other
but if you do not have a "franchise" QB it is not going to make much of a difference which way we go and if we do not get one pretty fast, assuming Johnny is not the guy, in a couple years we will have to be replacing Thomas, Dansby, Mack, Whitner, etc.

The "franchise QB" is part truth, part myth. Yes, obviously an elite QB likely puts you in position to contend every year. And yes, having good QB play is important. But, if you look at the list of guys that have won SBs, it isn't always populated with elite guys (Dilfer, Brad Johnson, Rypien) and some elite guys have one (Brees, Peyton Manning, Rodgers, Favre) or no (Marino, Fouts, Moon, Kelly) SBs. Baltimore won one with Flacco. Eli has more SBs than Peyton. It can be done. It just takessmart team building. Remember, this team was 7-4 with competent QB play last year. Filling some more holes is not a bad strategy for a team with glaring ones.

Problem with that is - if no franchise QB is present, you end up having an organization that's convinced itself a player is capable of more than what they are (Weeden, Quinn).

As opposed to taking productive players at other positions of need that have skills which appear to translate well to the NFL.

I'd say the Browns have taken too many chances. Again - Weeden, Quinn, Manziel.

edit:

" Farmer said there is "smoke" and "fodder" out there regarding potential deals. The GM said he won't be pressured into any trade or addressing any position that doesn't make him feel comfortable. (via ESPN's Jeremy Fowler) "

So, just for clarification - if there is any stupid ass trades that (most likely) will occur and backfire - Farmer is quoted that he must have been fully comfortable with them.
