Cleveland Browns (Finally drafting Buckeyes)

Any Browns list that doesn't feature Mike Junkin prominently isn't being serious.... Dude was 1. A bust, 2. a top 5 pick, and 3. was a "why the fuck would you take that guy?" type selection.

Couch on the other hand was pretty much the consensus guy to take at #1, started 59 games and got his team to the playoffs. (And if I'm being honest, if the Browns take McNabb #1 and Couch goes to the Eagles and Andy Reid, it doesn't take much imagination to think its plausible that Couch gets the chunky soup commercials and NFC championship game losses and McNabb ends up unfairly on these lists)
Junkyard dogs take offense to your comments.

Tanking allegations made by ex-Cleveland Browns coach Hue Jackson can't be substantiated, independent review shows

The NFL said Monday that an independent review found "no evidence" to substantiate allegations made by former Cleveland Browns head coach Hue Jackson that the the team intentionally lost games in the 2016 and '17 seasons.

Jackson was fired by Browns owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam eight games into the 2018 season with a 3-36-1 overall record.

In February, Jackson indicated in a series of posts on social media that the team paid him bonuses incentivizing him to lose and that he was set up to fail. Jackson later softened those allegations.

The NFL announced that after a 60-day review, independent investigators led by former Securities and Exchange Commission chair Mary Jo White "determined that none of the allegations could be substantiated."

The league said that Jackson initially agreed to meet with the investigators, but ultimately did not. The league said Jimmy Haslam was interviewed, as were as other current and former members of the organization.

They didn’t come close to a deal.

That’s what I heard from a high-placed NFL source about the Browns’ trade talks with Carolina concerning QB Baker Mayfield that collapsed Friday.

The Browns are in a tough spot. The entire NFL knows they want to dump Mayfield after trading for Deshaun Watson. While Browns owner Jimmy Haslam denies it, many NFL owners are outraged over the fully guaranteed $230 million deal he gave to Watson.

With few, if any, viable trade possibilities and with the Browns possibly needing a full-season starter if Deshaun Watson‘s suspension ends up being much longer than expected, Cleveland may indeed keep Baker Mayfield.

Some have insisted Mayfield would never go along with that. Well, he has 18.8 million reasons to do so.

He’s under contract. If he doesn’t show up for mandatory minicamp or training camp, he gets fined. Under the rules of the fifth-year option, a holdout that would cause him to miss preseason games would result in the forfeiture of a regular-season game check (as to Mayfield, that’s $1.04 million) for each preseason game missed. So if he doesn’t show up, he’ll lose a lot of money.

Mayfield also needs to behave. His salary is guaranteed for skill, injury, and cap. If Mayfield engages in “personal conduct which, in the reasonable judgment of the Club, adversely affects . . . the Club,” the Browns could cut him for that reason and try to not pay him a penny, as the Ravens did with safety Earl Thomas.

So if Mayfield wants his $18.8 million, he needs to play along with the Browns, if they choose to keep him around.

David Bell - check
Perrion Winfrey - check

Missed on Neil Ferral

Need more work on that IDL, but so far I'm content with those two picks being Day 1 contributors.

Following the draft, Winfrey was asked what he will bring to the Browns and how he expects to fit in on the defensive line.

"A dog mentality," Winfrey said. "Come on, now. I'm coming in to kill right away with my boys. I'm lined up next to Myles Garrett, the best defensive end in the game. We finna take this over. It's over with. I'm telling you, it's over with. I'm going to come in and work every single day till I can't work no more. They will feel me every single day, sir. I'm gonna give it my all, on and off the field. Anything that is negative in my game I will turn into a positive by the beginning of the season."

He was also asked where his 'dog mentality' comes from.

"It comes from having nothing. I come from nothing. I've never had nothing. Anything in my life that I've had to get, I've had to go get it. Nothing was ever given to me, so that's where this comes from. This grit, this passion — everything about me. I've never had nothing. Anything that I've ever had to get it, it had to be taken. So that's why I live my life the way I live it."

Just sayin': A "dog dawg mentality" should fit right in:

The Browns had a bird in the hand. They pursued the proverbial two in the bush. It worked. And yet they’re still clinging to the bird in the hand.

Chris Simms and I spent plenty of time during Monday’s PFT Live fleshing out the argument that it’s wrong for the Browns to squat on quarterback Baker Mayfield, now that they’ve gone all in on quarterback Deshaun Watson. It’s a classic sunk cost. They made a $230 million investment in getting Watson. What’s another $18.8 million (minus whatever he would earn with a new team) if they simply cut the cord on Mayfield?

The Browns think the sunk cost can be partially or maybe even completely recovered, if a trade opportunity that currently doesn’t exist materializes at some point between now and the start of the regular season, or perhaps even the trade deadline. But that hinges on a chain of events that likely won’t happen.

First, a team needs to lose its current starter. Second, that team needs to opt for an approach other than “next man up.” Third, the Browns need to be the ones to get the deal done for Mayfield before the 49ers can for Jimmy Gaoppolo.

There’s another way to recover all or part of the sunk costs. If Mayfield ultimately cries uncle and gives up part of his guaranteed salary or if Mayfield says or does something to justify cutting him for reasons other than skill, injury, or cap, the Browns can emerge with a victory.

JuJu was right. The Browns is the Browns. Even as the team becomes more competitive, dysfunction lingers in the organization. Their handling of Mayfield proves it. Intent on treating him like property and not like a human being whose career hinges on getting himself in position to find a new home sooner than later, the Browns are sending a very bad message to current and future members of the team.

But, hey, no one should be surprised. With a Chief Strategy Officer on the payroll, there’s always a strategy, for everything. Even when the best strategy would be to ditch the strategizing and just do the right thing.

The right thing to do in this specific case is to cut Mayfield and move on. It’s in his best interests, and it’s in the team’s best interests — even if the Chief Strategy Officer fails to see it.

Cleveland Browns reach 4-year, $56.75M deal with TE David Njoku, agent says

The Cleveland Browns have agreed to terms on a new four-year, $56.75 million deal with tight end David Njoku that includes $28 million guaranteed, his agent confirmed Friday.

Agent Malki Kawa confirmed the deal on social media, while Njoku thanked the Browns organization in a post to Instagram.

The Browns placed the franchise tag on Njoku earlier this offseason, and he had until July 15 to agree to a long-term contract. Had they not reached a deal, Njoku would've played the 2022 season on the franchise tender, which is worth $10.931 million, per a memo previously obtained by ESPN.

Making Guarantees

The Cleveland Browns are the only team in the NFL that have a quarterback, running back, wide receiver and tight end that all rank in the top seven at their position in guaranteed money.

PLAYER GTD. $ RANK/POS
Deshaun Watson $230M 1st/QB
Nick Chubb $20M 7th/RB
Amari Cooper $60M 6th/WR
David Njoku $28M 6th/TE

Spending serious loot to win now. AFC North is going to be a fun division to watch.

Updated AFC North Title Odds

It's a bit surprising to not see the reigning AFC Champion Bengals as the favorites to win the AFC North next season, but that's where we find things as the summer approaches.

Instead, the Browns enter the summer -- after the NFL Draft and schedule release -- at +170 to win the division at Caesars Sportsbook, giving them the best odds. That means you'd have to risk $10 to win $17 or $100 to win $170, etc.

Cincinnati and Baltimore are tied for the second-best odds at +220 to win the division. The Bengals are trying to get back to the playoffs and to the Super Bowl, while the Lamar Jackson-led Ravens are looking to get things back on the right track -- a big Draft Day trade with the Cardinals saw the departure of WR Marquise Brown.

Lastly, you've got the Steelers at +1000 ($10 wins $100). Big Ben Roethlisberger has retired, paving the way for the start of a new era in Pittsburgh.

You can check out every team's strength of schedule and see if that changes your mind once it comes time to place a futures bet on the AFC North.

Team Odds
Cleveland Browns+190
Cincinnati Bengals+210
Baltimore Ravens+210
Pittsburgh Steelers+900

How long has it been since Pittsburgh was the "doormat" of their division?

Maybe 1988 in the AFC Central when they were 5-11.
