Cleveland Browns (Finally drafting Buckeyes)

This has to make the Browns a legitimate contender for winning it all...
Def backfield should be remarkably better
Offensive line should be heathy
Would hope for some upgrade in the LBs
but, on paper, this is the best Browns team in decades
Ehhhhh...if they get 2016-18 Clowney, than yeah...maybe. It’s the two years before and after those three good years that should be of concern. He was either hurt or invisible for most of those seasons. His last two years:

2019 w/SEA- 13/11 g/gs, 31 tckls, 7.0 tfl, 3.0 sacks
2020 w/TEN- 8/8 g/gs, 19 tckls, 3.0 tfl, 0.0 sacks

I hope a major chunk of that $10M is incentive-based. Dude is a freak talent, but for injuries are always a concern and he’s been very “meh” for over half of his career.

It was the best Browns team "in decades on paper" before they signed Clowney.

At any rate, obviously the best ability being availability, but other than that, here's an interesting breakdown on Clowney and what it is that he does well (and why he doesn't get a lot of sacks, which he obviously doesn't do well) and its my guess that the Browns understand this...

https://ftw.usatoday.com/2020/10/jadeveon-clowney-pressures-no-sacks-titans

This leads me to two thoughts.... 1. @Buckeneye might not be all that far off on the old 5-0-6... and 2. I'm still not sure they won't take another Edge in the first round, just because I'm not sure they can assume they'll get enough games out of these guys. Clowney/McKinley is actually quite a bit cheaper than Vernon/Clayborn but Clayborn's history was not missing many games at all. (And Vernon was ultimately did start 14 games).

Need is a terrible evaluator of talent. At this point the draft belongs to Cleveland. No pressing needs so a minor trade up or even trade down is perfectly fine. BPA all the way.

As for that 5-0-6 comment, it's funny given the evolution of the modern NFL linebacker. Behind QB and CB, I'd venture LB has become the next most difficult. You have to run, tackle, hit, drop into passing lanes and cover increasingly complex horizontal passing concepts not including the screen game.

There is a reason 3 down linebackers are so sought after. Your Bobby Wagner's, Luke Keuchly's , Lavonte David, Fred Warner, Vander Esch... Rare breed.

So when you can't find them you see these teams supplement with so-so players and then these oversized DB's they run at will backer. It's made the advent of the big nickel easier to scout now because identifying these plus size safeties from the college game are more common.

Yeah, my point was if the feel like BPA is edge, they will take them. (BPA meaning most valuable to them, and I am guessing they wouldn't mind cost controlling that spot going forward for a full rookie deal)

I agree. So long as their BPA at that spot for edge isn't Patrick Jones or Carlos Basham.

Well, the one thing they could do is take a high ceiling dude like Oweh... or if they want like that LB from Kentucky whose name is escaping me. I'm not super in favor of either... its gonna be weird with the opt out guys on the board too, though.

Jamin - Kentucky. Haven't watched him yet so can't really give an opinion either way.

I guess it all boils down to who is going to be available at #26 but I would be very disappointed if they took a edge rusher (exception might be Oweh) or LB (exception might be Collins). They need some backup quick-learning CBs because both Williams and Ward are injury prone plus the fact that is the position where some quality will be available at #26. I would definitely not take any LB who could not do it all. I have also read where Berry might even sign a FA CB.

I started with either a DB or DL... I'm pretty much still there. Some folks have Barmore around there these days, if they take JOK, I mean, isn't he really a big Safety? (I would rather they not), there seem to be a bunch of CB's that are a possibility, and of course a number of Edges projected in the top 20, they won't all go by then... and they'll almost certainly take a WR or two but I think the #1 type guys will be long gone by 26. I think the only need pick will probably be a CB gets taken in the first 3 rounds (4 picks) and BPA's could be anyone, I personally think there could be an interior OL in the first 3 picks too, and they're probably keeping an eye out for burner receivers etc... I mean "imagine with me if you will" if someone like Freiermuth falls to them in Rd 2... all the cap room you need is just "David Njoku to the ____ for a conditional 6th rd pick" away

And I think they will trade up (most likely within the Rd they are in) once and probably trade back once if the board looks like they have what they need later for some future considerations.... do they really need to take 9 guys this year if they can get the one or two borderline starters they need and the developmental guys they feel like they want. (Although by next year we will be at 14 practice squad players per CBA so its going to look more like COVID, and I guess we will see if its 12 or 16 this year at some point. Is it me or did everyone like the IR rules and active/nonactive/practice squad rules a lot better last year?)

99% agree with you. If Collins is there at LB. I take him over Oweh. But if Jaycee Horn falls that far, I would take him over Collins. This is a pretty deep draft for Linebackers and there are some good ones even in to the 5th round based on some mock drafts. They need depth at CB and DE but need it more so at CB. For the first time in a long time, the Browns can take the BPA but it needs to be at positions they are thin at.

Sheldon Richardson is out. Browns must be about to add another DT in free agency, or else that position has to be their first round pick.
This gives them around $20 mil in cap space in addition to their rookie pool. I think they might be looking at some other free agents other than DTs. They might have their eye on a CB or two. Maybe Richardson will restructure but he did not sound very happy. I seriously doubt if they go DT in the first round unless the Bama kid is still there at #26.
