Cleveland Browns (2016 thread of unrelenting dumpster conflagration)

Speaking of Billy, can we expect the Browns to reach for a QB with the 2nd pick as is being projected by all the draft gurus on their big boards?

Absolutely. I expect Goff to be that reach. While I haven't watched him as much as I watched some prospects last year, I just don't see an NFL QB jump off the screen at me. There are things about his game I'm not a fan of.

Nah, we've seen this several times already.
The media (and braindead) will put all the pressure in the world on them to go with QB. But they'll resist it and draft a capable lineman (Bosa? Tunsil?) who will contribute for years.
Later, when whatever QB the media has over-rated for months slips... the Browns will trade their next 2 1st round picks and the #32 overall to trade up to 22 and pick some shitbag like Hackenberg.

Oddly. I told my brother in law the exact same story last weekend.

Is Carson Wentz higher on Cleveland's board than Jared Goff?
California's Jared Goff and Memphis' Paxton Lynch are the two players that have most often been attached to the Cleveland Browns at the No. 2 overall selection early in prognostications. However, another player to keep an eye on is Carson Wentz of North Dakota State. According to Charlie Campbell of WalterFootball.com, the buzz at the Senior Bowl is that the Browns may actually prefer Wentz over Goff and Lynch.

One area scout of a team picking in the top 10 that doesn't need a quarterback was gushing over North Dakota State quarterback Carson Wentz. The team has given him a first-round grade and thinks that Wentz is the real deal. They say that Wentz has a good arm, size and athleticism, and they love him off the field. They like his pocket presence, field vision, experience under center, making play calls in the huddle, and potential to grow in the NFL. The scout said that he will fill out his frame in a NFL strength and conditioning program. That area scout said the big challenge for Wentz will be the drastic change in the speed of the game coming from North Dakota State's opponents compared to the NFL. This week at the Senior Bowl could vault Wentz high in the first round.

How high? Extremely high. In speaking with sources at the Browns, Wentz is definitely in play with Cleveland. He's viewed as a first-rounder despite a small sample size of starts in college. Sources say the Browns really like Wentz. There are some who believe that Wentz is the best quarterback prospect and they say the only reason why Wentz isn't the consensus No. 1 quarterback is the helmet he wears (i.e. coming from a small school). Assuming the Browns move on from Johnny Manzieland draft a quarterback, it sounds like they are focused on Wentz or Cal quarterback Jared Goff. Both are rated ahead of Memphis' Paxton Lynch, and Wentz could be the early lean.

I love underdogs, but really? He might not even have been the best quarterback on his team.

Browns gonna Brown....IMHO there is no QB worthy of a No. 2 pick in this draft.

Absolutely. The Browns always want to draft need even when that option isn't worth where they are sitting. They don't care if the best QB isn't worth #2. They're like a homeless person who needs something for a shelter over his head, food and warm clothes, yet the only thing available is a piece of chain link fence for shelter. They have determined that out of the three, most important is shelter. They could choose something else that could help them, like a meal or a warm pair of pants, but they pass on those for what's more important even though it's clear from a hundred miles away that the fence isn't going to do shit to help keep them safe from the elements such as rain. But they needed a roof and that's what was the best available so they take it and assume they are better off and they didn't just waste their selection on something that still needs replaced.

This is going to be the true test for the new FO. Do they take the best QB available just because they can or do they take the BPA, which very likely could be Bosa? This years Super Bowl seems to be the anomaly where both QB's were the #1 pick. The easiest way to build a team seems to be finding a QB outside of the top 5. If you can strike gold with a Wilson or Brady it buys you a few years of cheap QB play so you can spend money on other positions. Hopefully the analytics tell them that #2 is a stretch for any QB this year. If Bosa is there at #2 they might get a good trade down offer that nets them the best QB and an extra first rounder+.

statistically top 5 qbs are the most sustainable qb bets in terms of the draft. taking the #1 qb in the draft is by far your best statistical option. the failure rate for qbs outside of that is quite high.
