Cleveland Browns (2014 Season)

Stand corrected. 5 NFC West titles and a trip to the SB in 10 seasons. Not bad but still paled to what was accomplished in GB. I guess his successes (in Seattle) did not leave much of an impression in my memory especially after what had happened in Cleveland.
He was a disaster at Seattle when he moved up to the front office and regarding his tenure at Cleveland, I think two words some it up and those would be Pat Shurmur

Mary Kay weighs in on the front office shake up.

Browns CEO Joe Banner and his top lieutenant Mike Lombardi ended on bad terms with each other, and their discord led to Jimmy Haslam firing both, league sources told cleveland.com.
Banner and Lombardi clashed over a number of things, but the disconnect came to a head during the tumultuous 25-day coaching search.
By the end of it, Banner wanted to fire his embattled GM, and Lombardi knew it. If he didn't know, he missed the writing on the wall. . .

The part of the article that I do not understand is when they talk about interviewing Schiano and that he was recommended by not only Bill B but also Urban. I wonder who talked to Urban from the Browns organization and Schiano what had been a terrible hire.

Yeah, that whole thing is interesting. If you haven't read Peter King's column on this, he indicated that the Schiano interview was one of the things that was irking him with Banner. Also, why would the Browns (or any team) rely on another team - particularly Belicheck - to help select their head coach?

Haslam and Kraft have a little bit of a connection so maybe Bob told Bill gave Jimmy an idea. Maybe now they go to one but just some idea.

This part made me do a double-take:

Sources told cleveland.com it's true Whisenhunt was told he didn't get the job last year because of his staff, but that he never called out Banner over it during this year's interview or had an edge in his voice. One source said there was never an awkward moment during the Whisenhunt meeting and that he was the consummate professional. The discussion was frank and open, but Whisenhunt was non-confrontational.

LOL. Nobody was questioning Whisenhunt's professionalism you dipshit.

I would say that we're questioning the Browns' professionalism, but that's not really true either, is it? Their standing is pretty much confirmed.

Cleveland.com really needs to find another beat writer for the Browns. MKC is just terrible.

The ever-popular James O. Thach's take on the Washington Redskins (team name and dinner plate) on Amazon.com has this little comment on the Brownies:

Washington Redskins Dinner Plates (8 per package) [Toy]
Offered by LARKS Cake & Candy- 99% Free Shipping
Price: $4.66

2 used & new from $4.66

These are beautiful plates. I love the Redskins, and the proud history they represent--82 years and counting. That's why it saddens me to know that Native Americans are once again less than thrilled with the name we've given them. ... I don't think the NFL should back down--I think they should double down. There are many more cultural traditions that could be commemorated by the NFL.

We could celebrate the rich heritage of Italian immigrants with the Philadelphia Dagos, and the hardy German work ethic of the Chicago Krauts. ... There are so many quaintly demeaning slurs waiting to be redeemed by the NFL--like the San Francisco Flamers, the Carolina Whitetrash, and the Cleveland Browns.

... But whatever choice they make, don't call them racists. They find that term offensive.

Ryan Wilson is not feeling the winning in 2014...some good names on the FA list though.
There are some decent defensive backs and offensive lineman that could help out the Browns that are not mentioned in that article. Also, a couple nice WRs. Hopefully, they will re-sign Mack and Ward without having to use the franchise tag. If they are really serious about improving this year, they really need to spend some money in free agency.

if i'm not mistaken this is the year when the spending floor kicks in under the new CBA. So, cleveland is going to have to throw out some cash regardless. i'm guessing ward is going to get tagged. mack will ultimately depend on how crazy some team like tampa gets in giving him a deal.

Yup. No way Mack will get tagged if they cannot come to an agreement. A C is tagged like any OL which would be way too much to pay for a decent center. I hope they do not have to tag Ward because that would hurt us in getting a another DB in free agency. Do not want to tie up too much money in the defensive backfield. I thought that maybe Haden could talk Ward into signing since they are good friends.

I'm hoping we sign Mack and Ward simply because that's less draft picks to spend on holes that didn't exist during the season.

I still wouldn't mind a #2 CB. Gipson has been a pleasant surprise at safety - I don't really think we need an upgrade there.

The more picks we have to address ILB, WR, OG and RB, the better.
