Cleveland Browns (2014 Season)

I had to wait... cuz I HATE it when I am right when it comes to predicting a player will be a bust for the Browns.

It is early... the offensive line was the worst I have seen it in quite a time. When guys are hitting your QB/RB at the mesh point, it ain't good. But everything I predicted he would look like in the NFL came true. Horrible QB mechanics, making bad decisions and not being able to elude NFL defensive linemen.

Now for the silver lining... he has 2 more games to show he will NOT be the franchise QB so the Browns can move on from him. Thankfully he was the 22nd pick so the organization isn't set back by moving on so quickly.

Now for my most "favorite" time of the year... which QB shall we draft? LOL Gawd it would be comedy gold for Manziel and Winston to be on the same team... if only I wasn't a Browns fan and had to suffer through it.

The most frustrating thing is that people keep pointing to lack of stability as the problem. It's not. It's lack or talent and football smarts. The reason there is no stability is that they keep drafting/signing players that lack one or both of those things. The teams that have stability at QB and head coach are the teams that have good ones. [Mark May] players get [Mark May]canned in this league, as they should, and the Browns will be looking for QBs again before long because they signed a journeyman and drafted a [Mark May]head.

It's not like it's just a matter of picking any old player and sticking with him long enough. Who was the last quarterback worth a damn who sucked in his first year but eventually came good? You either have it or you don't.

The Browns don't have any stability issues at LT. It's not because they drafted a guy who wasn't good and just waited long enough. They drafted a guy with talent and a brain who started kicking ass when he got here. They won't solve the problem at QB until they finally make a draft pick for that position in the same mold.

I don't have a problem with signing a journeyman. Somebody has to take snaps until you can find your guy... and guys who nobody expected to be more than journeymen have won super bowls.
Wasting a 1st round draft pick on a celebrity shirt-seller, however... is terrible. Even worse when they traded up to get him. If they just wanted a shirt-selling publicity stunt they could've hired Tim Tebow for a much smaller investment and got the same results.

They already have that in Hoyer. What amazes me is how difficult it is to find a solid - not to say 'great'- QB. Part of it has to do with the way the pros insist on playing the game. Being an escape artist is nice, but if you can't also be a straight pocket passer you got no future. Witness Smith, Pryor, Young, Newton, Griffin III and a host of others.

All the more reason I think Hoyer will be retained. There is no franchise QB in this draft. Closest thing might be Mannion but that kid has had some streaky play.

I could see a late round pick, UDFA or perhaps another vet brought in to help. However if (when) Manziel bombs out these next two games, it will really go a long ways toward bumping Hoyer's contract to the forefront of things. Which I have no issue with, Johhny salary certainly isn't hurting much. Continue to build the rest of the team in the draft with BPA and depth. That W column should increase even further next year.

Maybe I read it wrong, but my assumption is that he was criticizing signing Hoyer and drafting Manziel.
I don't have a problem with the first part so long as they're not being overpaid. This year at least Hoyer isn't over paid... not sure what happens with his contract moving forward. He's done well enough to stick around and bad enough that not many teams will come sniffing?
Agree on how difficult it is to find a reliable QB. Even a guy like Flacco who just isn't that good, and now clearly over paid, is still a clear cut above the rest. I'd love to find a Roethlisberger personally... w/o his off-field bs.

there's no way they'll take Winston a year after taking Manziel.

Although if Hundley is there in the 3rd round I could see them taking a look at least. Otherwise there isn't much there to draft I don't think.

No way they draft a QB in the first 2 rounds. Haslam will not allow them to admit Johnny Foosball was an epic blunder that quickly.

On the bright side that hopefully means they can use all the picks they have to fill in the need positions enough that the QB won't matter. Get everyone healthy, upgrade 1-2 spots on the OL, find a big reliable WR, keep Gordon away from the drugs, and add a pass rusher or two.

IMO these next 2 games are a reality check for Manziel. If he plays like he did last week and is still getting drunk on inflatable pool swans all off season I wouldn't be shocked to see the organization bite the bullet and write him off. He has to dedicate himself to getting better before next season, which it sounds like he hasn't done yet.

Jony's smart enough to make it seem like he's working... he'll start messing around after Hoyer signs elsewhere and there's not decent FA QBs out there.
