Cleveland Browns (2013 Season)

I'd say in light of the "worst pass ever thrown in the history of organized football" they ought to revisit that discussion.

With all due respect I'm guessing you didn't watch scUM/ND this year.

The only thing Weeden has going for him is they have a couple away games. There is no way he could step foot on the field in Cleveland next Sunday. I just don't know what they are supposed to do at QB. Would Campbell be any better? Probably not, but he probably isn't any worse. They need to sign somebody and start grooming them on the inactive list because they will probably need another QB at some point this season. Seems like there has to be someone like Hoyer, but younger sitting on a practice squad or a couch somewhere.

Do you think Kelly Holcomb would come back to play for the Browns?

It will be interesting to see if Weeden plays better on the road than he does at home. For some reason, I think he might but that is tittle solace.

Oh where have you gone, Otto Graham, Milt Plum, Jim Ninowski, Frank Ryan, Brian Sipe and even Bernie..

The stats (according to Pro Football Reference) show that he plays better on the road:

Completion percentage:
  • Home - 54%
  • Road - 61%
QB rating:Home - 61.5
  • Road - 86.6
TD:INT ratio:
  • Home - 9:17
  • Road - 9:5
Yards per game:
  • Home - 208.0
  • Away - 262.8
If he only played on the road he'd be knocking on the door of mediocrity instead of just being shitty. Here's the kicker though - it doesn't effing matter.

Win-Loss record:
  • Home - 5-6
  • Road - 1-7
That's right... when the Browns succeed it's because they overcome his shittiness not because he temporarily elevates himself to mediocrity.

Maybe Weeden pushes harder at home to make the perfect play to impress the home crowd. Unfortunately pushing too hard usually turns into epic fuck ups. I just don't think Weeden sees the field well enough to make the quick decisions like we saw from Hoyer. Weeden's good throws can be amazing, but his bad either ends up in a sack or an INT. I think that knowing he is going to take an extra second to figure out what he is going to do with the ball causes the OL to get beat faster than when Hoyer was under center.

I wonder if it would be worth signing Tyler Wilson (or some other young QB that might have potential) to learn the system on the inactive list for the rest of the year. That way they could have a true QB battle next spring/summer between the QB they draft, Hoyer, and the guy they sign now.

I do not know about Tyler Wilson but I have heard Doug Dieken say every week that the one advantage that Hoyer has over Weeden is that he was able to watch film with Tom Brady and that he learned a lot by just doing that. He probably knows how to read defenses more quickly and that is a huge advantage.

In other words, the Browns need to have somebody around worth learning from before that kind of thing would work.

There are only a handful of teams that have a QB worth learning from, but that doesn't seem to be an issue for other up and coming QB's. You would have to hope that an OC like Turner could fill that roll for a capable QB. I just don't think Weeden's brain is capable of processing the game like Brady or Manning can do.

How many good, young QBs have apprenticed lately... or even needed to? Kaepernick is the only one that comes to mind. Most everybody else worth a damn has gone straight into a starting role.

All the more reason I'd be content drafting a developmental QB and letting him learn behind Hoyer for a year or so. As opposed to reaching for a 2nd tier QB and burning a 1st round pick in doing so.

Well Bridgewater is out of the question, barring an absolute miracle. Even then, look at the benefits of sitting behind more experienced QB's that Rogers, Brady, Kaepernick and Locker had. All on record of saying it was invaluable to their development.

Let's suppose Tahj falls to us in that range, I'd still sit him a year behind Hoyer. Of course, lord knows the wonderful fans of Cleveland won't allow that.

For Hoyer I think Cleveland fans would be ok with it. Of course what are the chances of Hoyer making it the whole season healthy? I'm sure it has happened, but I don't remember a year when 1 QB has started the whole season for the Browns.

I guess that is what I was trying to say above when I discussed what Dieken said with regard to Hoyer.

Also, I do not understand all the love for Boyd. After watching Mariota I would prefer him over Boyd but perhaps everyone is thinking that he will be gone earlier than Boyd. Really do not like talking about the draft this early in the season because we have no idea what is going to happen and what everyone's records are going to be.
