Arm strength isn't the be-all end-all of the argument.

Let's remember I've said McCoy isn't the answer at QB, but he wasn't the issue that should have been addressed either. Weeden isn't the answer either - he's a 29 year old rookie with the same exact learning curve. So by the time he's ready to be a productive NFL QB, his skill set will start to decline. When they draft (probably between picks 7 through 10 now with the win and the remaining schedule), they should go for the best player available so long as isn't not a D-Tackle, QB or RB. If it's a receiver, that's fine. I think the defensive backfield should be the real target though. The defense is one stud CB (FA or draft), a good safety and a good linebacker away from being in the top 3 in the conference. sometimes, when your offense isn't ready to go you can win via a good ground game and a defense that is top 5 in the NFL (look at Baltimore and Shitzburgh)....

Bolded: No its not the be all end all, I'm not saying that but with respect to these two Browns it is because Colt does not have the arm strength sufficient enough to force defense to respect the vertical passing game(especially in the play action pass game which is so vital to any offense that they run now or in the future because you must capitalize on the attention defenses are going to paying to Trent Richardson.).

I think it was a move made by a bunch of guys that knew they were coaching for their jobs this season and hoping they could catch lightning in a bottle with a 28-29 year old rookie QB. I think you'll be hard pressed to find anyone that was calling for the Browns to draft Weeden in the first round. The only bright side is that most of the other players that people wanted to draft instead didn't pan out.

At least to me Weeden has shown to be an adequate NFL QB and should be able to fill the roll for 3-7 years depending how he develops. How he performs next year will show weather he is on the 3 or 7 year path. Regardless, drafting Weeden bought the Browns some time to try to find a good young QB in a later round like several other teams have been able to do.

If I were the new GM I probably wouldn't even look at a QB this draft unless they can move Colt. Fill all the other holes this year and see what we have. Above all else they need to find a good coach, which is something they haven't had yet.

We're arguing about the arm strength of a QB whom was told by his doctors that he might not get back that "zip" for several years.

How soon we forget he was knocked out of the BCS title game.

He had no problem getting the ball to his WR's at Tejas'. We had the pleasure of personally watching him twice. Although, admittedly the 2nd
time wasn't as fun. Many even praised his arm in college.

Less we also not forget, arm strength isn't the final factor in a ball's velocity. Footwork has a solid amount to do with it. Transfering your body's momentum from feet to arm to ball. Compounded by the fact an arm can "get stronger". Tom Brady did not have the same zip on the ball in his first couple NFL seasons if anyone here remembers seeing that.


For all that cannon arm that Weeds has, I can't remember watching Colt throw a possible game winning fade out of the back of the endzone (Weeden, twice)

But, it's where we are. I think Brandon might have a slightly higher ceiling. However I'll wait until this time next year to really compare the two. No decision can be made on any QB in their first full year of starting.
We've seen good, we've seen bad. That's about it.

The only thing we can all agree on. Brandon was not a needed pick. Hell I'm sure all of us would have been just fine spending that 22nd overall on something else. I'm sure we'd be in a very similar position with Colt at QB instead of Weeden. I think everybody would have been in agreement to go elsewhere and wait until a younger franchise QB comes along in a year or 2. Meanwhile adding crucial depth and playmakers to both sides of the ball.

I like Colt, I like his heart, I like his drive...but he always reminded me of Brady Quinn, albeit with a lot more toughness and a much bigger brain. Too many 3 yard dumpoffs, which never work (unless it's 4th and 29 against the Chargers), and not enough reason for safeties to have to play deeper than 10 yards. I don't know if he's better, worse, or the same as Weeden yet, but I do know he is limited in what he can do.

As much comfort as I feel with Colt as our backup QB (someone capable of being remotely decent in a pinch, Eh Charlie Batch??) getting some trade value would have been nice.

Plenty of teams looking for QB's - Matt Flynn only needed one game against the Pats too look like teams would make a run at him ( I was one of those dumb enough to hope the Browns might show interest, glad they didn't)

Getting an additional 3rd-5th rounder would have been sweet. Still possible, but unlikely.


I'm considering what happens if this QB class doesn't impress at the combine or (god forbid) some franchise doesn't go full retard for Geno or Matt.

I wants me some Jarvis Jones...

I know that you want a high draft choice so that we can get Mr. Jones but I do not think that we should trade Colt unless we can get a proven veteran QB as a backup. Look what is happening all around the NFL with teams that do not have decent backup QB's. I would like to see a lot more of Colt before I get rid of him.

I think there will be a few guys besides Mr. Jones that will be available when we select come this April.

I'm very much in agreement. I said it once, not as a joke either. I have a feeling Colt will be needed under center before his time in Cleveland is over.

That could be anything from filling in for injury to late game heroic's. I'm not sure which. Its nice having a good backup, especially in a passing league. The Texans proved what having good backup QB's are like.

But if he was to have a good outing against the Raiders and generate some trade interest. It would be hard to ignore a decent offer.

Rolando McClain was released by the Raiders. I know a couple Browns fans who asked if we'd put in a claim for Babin, to which I just said 'no' and quietly didn't insult them like I should have.


But a young LB who's struggled in a new system, yet put up decent stats last year? Interesting.

I'll be curious to hear why he was cut. However I'm sure the Bungles have already put in a claim for him.

edit: I'm curious for the largest reason, that I would love to see a flip-flopped Wimbley situation. A LB turned 5 technique pass rusher
from Oakland would be hilarious.

That's why I wouldn't trade Colt for anything less than a 3rd round pick right now, which I don't see anyone paying out for him.

Agreed, Babin=Andre Rison on defense.

As for McClain, eh, take him or leave him, which means he is perfect for the Browns.

If anyone wants to talk college production, McClain was a monster at Bama', and D. Jackson is injury prone, whats wrong with taking a stab in the dark here? (unless he is a total headcase thats going to kill our locker room )

I wouldn't have a problem with it. McClain has been a productive NFL player so if he isn't a head case the Browns have depth issues at LB, especially MLB.
