Apparently not as well documented as we may think.

This guy thinks it is documented:

Of course he is just trying to sell his book.

What did he do with the money he made from the stadium for the $1 lease per year? If his land costs were fixed to $1, he must have made an absolute killing especially with concerts and the Indians. Did he piss that money away?

Come to think of it - what dumbass city officials agreed to a $1/year lease?

John Hicks (OSU legend) called into a local sports radio station today and said he was making a bunch of bad business deals in Cleveland and losing money on those. He said, eventually, the banks cut him off and he went deeply into debt.

I remember reading about all that stuff during the move. His only real business (or shall I say profitable) was the Browns and he spent all the money he had on trying to make the Browns winners. That is why the fans loved him so much. And also the reason why it hurt the fans so much when he moved.

Remember, this was also before the real boom of money hit the NFL. And that $1 lease had a big clause... Modell was responsible for all costs/maintenance of the facility. With a 70 year old stadium... it was basically falling apart and needed to be repaired every other year.

If only he wasn't so freaking stubborn... had he asked the public for help and/or was willing to sell a big chunk of the team.

Watch, he'll make the Hall of Fame now.

The best part about the Hall of Fame being in Canton, Ohio is that this will never happen. Too many Browns fans would hijack the induction ceremony and no one would be able to speak for Modell over the incessant boos.

Never. Gonna. Happen. Not over his dead body. Not over mine.

Better watch out. They'll just move the induction to NYC for a year and sneak him in. Of course they would have to keep his bust behind glass to stop Browns fans from fucking with it so it probably isn't worth the trouble. One giant mistake is probably good enough to keep someone out of the Hall (I'm looking at you Rapelesberger).

I can't provide a link but I was always under the impression that decades ago
Modell was in charge of handling the TV contracts for the NFL. Everyone involved with the NFL loved Modell as he was given a lot of credit for the billion dollar contracts. Look for him in a hall near you:(

The Hall vote will come down to Mary Kay Cabot. Grossi, for what it's worth, was so adamantly opposed to Modell, that I believe (on what I've read) that he basically had a "If you want me to ever support anymore from your market, you will not support Modell" tack. If Cabot relaxes that, he could very well get a push this year. If it doesn't happen this year, though, I doubt that it will.

Hmmm...so Clevelanders really wanted to give him a brand new stadium for years but he refused? That seems highly unlikely. How can you bring up Rison as some sort of prrof despite him using the same team plus a few new players to win a title a few years later? I'm not trying to flame so I won't post in this thread again. Just silly to be happy he died. He didn't sneak the team out in the middle of the night.
As posted above..

John Hicks called in to 97.1 today as a childhood friend of the mayor of Cleveland (active during the Browns move)..

He said "Let me drop some facts on you" and then made the following statements:
  • Art was a bad buisness man
  • Had all kinds of side-deals and buisnesses start up in Cleveland, using the Browns as collateral with the banks
  • He had a hotel in the downtown area that he gave back to the bank when he couldn't pay the bills
  • That was the last straw as banks stopped loaning him cash at that point
  • Art couldn't/wouldn't wait for the stadium due to his debt and no way to borrow the money in Cleveland
  • He rushed to move the team as a way out of debt
  • "Cleveland got screwed."
Am I happy he died? I cheered when I first heard the news, then caught myself.

Art Modell was a horrible business man. This has been well documented. He didn't give a shit about the city or the Cleveland Browns fans. This is a city that had the 4th highest attendance in the league at the time the move was announced.

If Modell had half a brain he would have sold the team, kept the team in Cleveland and lived off of that for the rest of his life.

Now they are talking about a moment of silence on Sunday? Are you fucking kidding me.

PLEASE try to have a moment of silence in Cleveland Stadium on Sunday. That would be fucking hilarious.
