Cleveland Browns (2011 season)

I have to say, watching that first half, we better hope there's no more injuries on the OL, because there is zero depth.

I know the FO is trying to put the Browns through a youth movement and really wants to shy away from bringing in big/splashy or even older free agents (and I agree with this strategy), but I do not feel comfortable with the current offensive line situation with regards to breaking in a young quarterback.

With Steinbach gone, it obviously weakens the left side of the line and the right side has always been a little suspect. I like Shawn Lauvao and I know you have to play young guys to develop them, but the fact is with him and Pinkston as the Browns starting guards, we are seriously inexperienced.

I'm hoping the Browns are watching the roster cuts and one of the spots they look to beef up with quality depth is the offensive line.

Initial cuts to bring the Browns roster to 63

http://www.clevelandbrowns.com/news...-players/ed890f54-2f6a-48a5-8d3b-d2b5d2ca209d

Branndon Braxton (OL)
Andre Carroll (DL)
L.J. Castile (WR)
Calton Ford (OL)
Coye Francies (DB)
Evan Frosch (TE)
Carl Gettis (DB)
Eric Gordon (LB)
Travis Ivey (DL)
Chris Matthews (WR)
Steve Octavien (LB)
Ko Quaye (DL)
Ramzee Robinson (DB)
DeAngelo Smith (DB)
Sidney Tarver (LB)
Phil Trautwein (OL)

Demetrius Williams (WR)

The other cuts to go down to 53

Dominic Alford-OL
Jarrett Brown-QB
Tyler Clutts-FB
Archie Donald-LB
Quinn Porter-RB
Brian Sanford-DL
Jarrod Shaw-OL
Brian Smith-LB
Rod Windsor-WR

Brandon Jackson-RB. Put on IR

And it looks like we signed a veteran guard!

Signed to a one-year contract was 10th-year offensive lineman Artis Hicks, a league source told The Plain Dealer. Hicks, 32, was released Saturday by the Redskins. Signed as an undrafted free agent in 2002 by the Eagles and then-General Manager Tom Heckert, Hicks will most likely work at left guard and might even challenge for the starting job.

Browns also claimed Sam Bradford's backup(Shurmer coached him in STL) off waivers and signed a few other players.

Same article said:
To make room for the four new players, the Browns waived offensive lineman Pat Murray, defensive lineman Auston English and linebacker Benjamin Jacobs. They also terminated the contract of defensive lineman Derrick Robinson.

Nothing really shocking as far as the cuts went, at least IMO.
Really happy they signed a veteran guard that could maybe start, I was not comfortable about throwing two very inexperienced players at guard, so a little insurance is nice.

I think the signing of Hicks shows how concerned the Browns are about leaving McCoy's backside open to a rookie LG (Pinkston) even though they have not come out and said that Hicks will start Sunday. The Browns have not signed many free agents over the age of 30 and the signing of Hicks goes against everything that they had been saying about trying to get younger.

Also, I do not like the fact that Pashos is in a walking boot the first practice day of game week does not bode well. Very thin if he goes down.

Yes, I agree. I love the youth movement and I totally think it is the way to go to build the Browns...but when talking about the offensive line I would not mind bringing some veterans to ease in some of the younger players. I was fine with Lauvao starting as a 2nd year player at RG but having two very inexperienced players at G, including a rookie protecting Colt's blindside made me a little uneasy.

Pinkston will get his reps and who knows, he may start this week. Hope Pashos can go on Sunday. Losing him would be a big blow to the line.

Not pleased with much of what I saw today.

Start first: Defense - shoddy early going. I can tell teams are going to test us on the edge and see if our (pass rushing) DE's can shed blocks and seal their side. Linebackers have to be ready. Opponents want to tire out our big men knowing they just absorb bodies and don't focus on penetration on running downs.

Ward in coverage scares me unless he's near the LOS. He needs work.
That PI call on Patterson was ticky tack. Sheldon Brown is more a liability then asset. Slide him to FS, move Haden to nickel on passing downs if you're not going to have him cover the oppositions #1 every down.

The touchdown to Green. Haden was visibly upset. I know exactly what he's feeling. Kid was baller all game, until he (and the rest of the defense) let it get to their head just once. That TD doesn't happen and its a whole different game.

He knows he did some good things - let it get to his head. A hard lesson learned. He'll come back fired up, no-nonsense ready to go. Pro-Bowl Alternate this year.

Linebackers: Jackson stays healthy and I like his ability and range. Good sack today. Solid job flying sideline to sideline. We need playmakers at OLB though. People who can run with TE's. Though I will admit Gresham could be a very great TE when he's ready. That's a tall order for anyone. A ton of blitzing today.

Special teams. Solid coverage. Decent returns. Shitty, shitty shitty punting.

Offense.

Lavauo. Not sure where his head was the first couple series. The right side of the line is in sad shape. Pinkston might be decent, but needs a year or two. Plus I'd prefer to see him at RT. Fact still remains. It's Thomas, Mack & then everyone else. That won't get it done. Dunlap was just bull rushing all game.

Identity is another thing. We have a pro-bowl bulldozer of a RB. An established run game even though the Oline isn't up to par. Two consecutive jump passes in the red zone? Are you fucking kidding? First one to Moore was a solid choice. Sadly we made Leon Hall look good today. But a jumper to Cribbs against Clements? Negative. We had numbers up front, Hillis can take on a linebacker and then some. Stop being so fucking cute Shurmur.

Short passing game (curls, slants, combacks) seemed non existent. Then again McCoy had a hand in his face most of the game. But I though rhythm passing was key to this offense?

I like the call to Moore deep. He should have come up with that ball. Kinda looked like his arm was being held down a little by the defender though.
Watson is a veteran. Nice having him on roster.

Hardesty did ok. Nice spin that would have been a 2 yard loss into a 6 yard gain. Bring him along slow but perhaps we have another contributor.

Play calling was lacking too. 1st down pass. 2nd down run. 3rd down pass. How many times in a row did we do that? Sooner or later when you pass so much on 1st down - defenses expect it. I didn't see a draw, counter or trap mixed in. Not much for screen's either.

Cribbs - clearly his role in KR/PR is reduced from touchbacks. Gotta get him involved on offense more. A failed end around every so often doesnt cut it. Defenses want to know where he is on the field because of his versatility. I suggest it starts being used as opposed to just a tradition WR.

I could go on for a while but I'm gonna stop here. Running out for dinner. God bless. Go Brownies.

the Browns, bottom line, have some of the worst offensive talent in the league. It isn't even close.

Their defensive talent isn't that much better to be honest, outside of Haden, Rubin, and Ward.

Cleveland fans were fooling themselves when they thought this team would be competitive this year. The schedule is favorable, but when your #1 receiver is probably Greg Little, you are screwed....

I feel bad for Colt. But he will likely be the scape-goat by the end of the year....

Disgraceful performance today and no indication that it's going to get any better.

The coaching was awful. Not sure what these guys have been working on in practice, but today looked like a cluster fuck from the get go. Aside from one quarter of decent football, the offense was going backwards.

Play calling, preparation, all on the coaches.

I think it's going to be a long season.

I agree that it was painful to watch the game today. RT is a serious issue right now. But it was first game of the year so there is lot of time to get better. New coaches, new schemes lots of new players. Sadly the Browns offense looked much better than this in the preseason.

Still, very few talented players. And I'll take talent at the end of the day. Too many people are comfortable with the amount of talent on this roster, and the decisions made over the last 2 years.

I don't get it.
