Cleveland Browns lose preseason game to New York Giants, lose quarterback Derek Anderson, return specialist Josh Cribbs, safety Brodney Pool early, linebacker Leon Williams later

Anderson, Cribbs, Pool, Williams hurt; play is painful
Tuesday, August 19, 2008 Tony Grossi
Plain Dealer Reporter

East Rutherford, N.J.- Most teams look vanilla in preseason. The Browns chose to wear chocolate brown pants. Bad idea.
The Browns' starters looked bad and played ugly against the New York Giants on Monday night at Giants Stadium.
Introducing themselves to a national television audience, the Browns committed almost every mistake imaginable in falling behind, 30-3, one minute into the second quarter.

Sports spotlight: These Browns not ready for prime-time play
Tuesday, August 19, 2008
BY TODD PORTER

On national TV, the Browns wore their pretty new brown pants. Perfect, given the evening. Those pants looked like they were colored au naturel.

Presumably, Clevelanddidn't crap down its collective legs to get that color in those pants before taking on the Super Bowl champion Giants on Monday night on ESPN. Presumably, the Browns aren't really going to be this gawd-awful bad.

Then again, this is Cleveland, and Monday night's 37-34 loss to the Giants looked like the clock was turned back to ? pick a game, any game ? 1999.

It was 30-3 before bedtime and, at best, the Browns looked like an unmade bed. A series of about a half-dozen plays snowballed on the Browns, and Cleveland was finished mentally and physically.

By halftime, Derek Anderson, their Pro Bowl quarterback, and Josh Cribbs, their Pro Bowl return specialist, were injured and the entire psyche of Cleveland was fractured. You probably wanted to get Joe Thomas a protective escort to the airplane.

Good lord, that was the worst 1st quarter I've ever seen. They say preseason doesn't matter, but it sure does when you suck that bad.

I do like what I've seen out of Charles Ali though, and a 56-yarder from Phil Dawson?! Who knew? He's even putting kickoffs into the endzone. He must've read some of the comments on here last week.
I am writing that entire game off to the Browns pants. They need to be thrown into the Hudson:)

All of us, including myself, need to take their negative comments back about Dawson that were made on this thread last week. That is until he misses a FG then we can bash him again.:wink2:

Seems Kellen wants new unis. Of course he said it wiould happen in 2008, so unless they announce something soon he didn't get his wish.

Penthouse: The Browns have never significantly changed their uniforms design. But when your name is the Browns, what can you really do with that?

The Soldier's Answer : You know what? We're in the process of changing all that. Next year, you're gonna see some new uniforms for the Cleveland Browns. This is really a big part of what Braylon Edwards and I have been talking about for a long time. It may be something similar to what the Broncos have. It's time for a change. Sometimes people live in the past in Cleveland. That's fine, but this team is trying to build an identity and start up something new.

I don't know how big of a problem this is going to be but they now have to play 2 preseason games in 9 days. Romeo better use some flame igniter when building that fire. Their first-team defense and offensive lines were just manhandled.

Shut up and play football Kellen. The Broncos uniforms? You mean the 3rd or 4th ugliest in the NFL if not all of football?

Browns bruised, battered

Wire Reports

Wednesday, August 20, 2008
Cleveland Browns receiver Joshua Cribbs suffered a high ankle sprain Monday night, Aug. 18, against the New York Giants that could keep him out until the opener Sept. 7, a source told The Plain Dealer on Tuesday, and quarterback Derek Anderson suffered a mild concussion that will keep him out for the next preseason game or two.
Cribbs underwent and X-rays and an MRI exam on Tuesday, which revealed no fracture. He will definitely sit out Saturday's third preseason game in Detroit and probably the final preseason game Aug. 28 at home against the Bears. Cribbs will be evaluated day-to-day for the Bears game, but starters usually play sparingly in the final tuneup anyway.

Anderson likely out vs. Lions; MRI reveals high ankle sprain for Cribbs

by Mary Kay Cabot Tuesday August 19, 2008, 7:48 PM

Thomas Ondrey/The Plain Dealer

Browns quarterback Derek Anderson may not see action again until the season opener against Dallas, following his concussion suffered Monday night against the Giants.
Browns quarterback Derek Anderson will most likely sit out Saturday's exhibition game in Detroit with a mild concussion suffered during Monday night's 37-24 loss to the Giants. If Anderson rests, as expected, Brady Quinn will start the third preseason game -- which is regarded as the dress rehearsal for the regular season.
Meanwhile, receiver Josh Cribbs underwent an MRI Tuesday on his left ankle, which he sprained in the first quarter of the game. By early Tuesday evening, a source told The Plain Dealer that Cribbs was diagnosed with a high ankle sprain and he could sit out the final two preseason games as well.
Syndric Steptoe will replace Cribbs. Steptoe had a magnificent night against the Giants, scoring on a 7-yard lateral, catching a 44-yard TD pass from Quinn and returning kickoffs of 40 and 90 yards. Cribbs limped out of the locker room at Giants Stadium in a walking boot and declined to be interviewed, only saying that he hoped he'd be okay and that he'd know more on Tuesday.

The Browns had no comment Tuesday on the injuries.
If Anderson misses the Detroit game, the Browns will be without two of their Pro Bowl players on offense in the final significant tune-up for the season. Receiver Braylon Edwards is also expected to miss his second straight game with a foot laceration.
