Browns notebook: Cribbs wants more in return for his services
Wednesday, August 6, 2008 3:03 AM
Pro Bowler Joshua Cribbs has made an unexpected return at the Cleveland Browns.
Cribbs, one of the NFL's premier special teams players, said yesterday that his agent has asked the club to restructure the six-year contract extension he signed during the 2006 season.
That might be asking a lot since Cribbs, who took back two kickoffs and a punt for touchdowns last season, still has five years remaining on the deal, which is worth about $6 million.
Last season, Cribbs, who was signed by the Browns as an undrafted free agent out of Kent State in 2005, was the only player to lead his team in kickoff return yards, punt return yards and special teams tackles. His 1,809 yards on kick returns set a franchise record and were the second most in league history.
The breakout season earned him a trip to Hawaii, where he joked with Chicago's Devin Hester about who is the better returner.

Crennel focuses on Browns defense
Exhibition vs. Jets will offer insights into unit's progress

Defensive tackle Shaun Rogers, returning an interception in practice, is one of seven newcomers being counted on to improve a defense that ranked 30th in the league last season.
BEREA, Ohio -- Toward the end of a news conference this week, Cleveland Browns coach Romeo Crennel was asked what he wanted to see tonight during an exhibition game against the New York Jets.
"I want to see how the new people fit into the defense. I want to see how the defense operates and performs and then I want to see who will hit and who will compete," he said.
Whether Crennel intended to leave out the offense, his answer was revealing.
Focusing on defense makes sense, considering it was 30th in the NFL last season. The Browns promoted Mel Tucker to defensive coordinator and added seven newcomers, at least three of whom are expected to start.
The new starters include defensive linemen Shaun Rogers and Corey Williams, acquired via trade, and cornerback Brandon McDonald, who, for now, steps into a starting role in just his second season.

Browns' Brady Quinn determined to stay patient in backup role to Derek Anderson
by Mary Kay Cabot
Wednesday August 06, 2008, 10:55 PMBrady Quinn will probably log more minutes than Derek Anderson in Thursday's preseason opener against the Jets and attempt more passes. He'll probably also see more No. 10 jerseys in the stands than Anderson's No. 3 and hear his name chanted more.
But when he walks off the field after about two quarters of work, he knows nothing will have changed. Anderson is the starting quarterback and virtually nothing Quinn does in these preseason games is going to unseat him.
"I wish that were different, but at this point in time, from what the coaches and the organization want out of this, that's kind of where they're pushing," said Quinn. "Obviously, you'd like there to be more competition. I think everyone wishes that were the case. But that's not reality, so you kind of have to roll with that situation."
Despite few opportunities in camp to throw to Braylon Edwards, Kellen Winslow or Donte Stallworth, Quinn continues to fancy himself a first-teamer.

Anderson plays like good old days Quarterback solid in brief stint. Browns fall

CLEVELAND: Most of the sports world cared only that just-traded quarterback Brett Favre was standing on the New York Jets sideline in khaki shorts, a T-shirt and a white ball cap with a play card in his hand.
But Browns fans had more on their minds. One of their primary concerns was whether quarterback Derek Anderson would start the preseason the way he finished the 2007 season.
Calming their fears, good D.A. returned. Backup Brady Quinn also moved the ball well, but Cleveland opened with a 24-20 loss to New York before an announced crowd of 70,668 at soggy Cleveland Browns Stadium.
Cornerback Dwight Lowery put the Jets ahead with a 62-yard punt return with 10:02 remaining. The rookie from San Diego State also intercepted a Ken Dorsey pass intended for rookie tight end Martin Rucker in the end zone with 4:02 to play after the Browns had driven to the Jets 9.

Braylon Edwards catches spotlight with touchdown Edwards is player who's indispensable

CLEVELAND: The Brett Favre sideshow rolled into town Thursday night, but it had little impact on the Cleveland Browns offense.
Not that it should.
But on a night when the talk was Brett-this, Brett-that, the other Team B guy ? Braylon Edwards ? provided the night's highlight.
His first-quarter touchdown catch was one of those, well-now-it's-third-down . . . wait, did he catch that . . . kind of catches.
The kind of catch a guy is not supposed to make.
Edwards made it, though. Heading to his right, Edwards at first looked over his left shoulder, to the middle of the field.
The ball was thrown behind him, to his right.

Browns' top draft pick has surgery on knee Linebacker Beau Bell has cartilage removed. Return date is unknown

CLEVELAND: Browns linebacker Beau Bell, Cleveland's first pick in the 2008 draft, underwent arthroscopic surgery Thursday to remove loose cartilage from behind his right kneecap.
The fourth-round pick from UNLV missed Monday's and Tuesday's practices after he twisted his knee in practice, coach Romeo Crennel said. Crennel hinted that something might be wrong Tuesday when he said, ''They'll look at him and then we'll make a decision if anything needs to be done.''
The Browns released a short statement on Bell's surgery before Thursday night's preseason opener against the New York Jets at Cleveland Browns Stadium, but did not indicate how long Bell would be out. If he is placed on injured reserve, he would miss the entire season.

Knee scope sidelines rookie LB for 4-6 weeks

Plain Dealer Reporter
Rookie linebacker Beau Bell, the Browns' fourth-round pick out of UNLV, underwent arthroscopic surgery Thursday on his right knee and will be out 4-6 weeks.
It means Bell will miss all of preseason and probably the first few games of the regular season.
The day Bell was drafted, Browns General Manager Phil Savage said he expected the linebacker to make an immediate impact on special teams and virtually guaranteed he'd be on the field Opening Day. Bell, the Browns' highest pick in 2008, is believed to have been hurt Monday morning in practice. He showed up for the evening session with the knee wrapped in ice and wore a sleeve on it for the rest of the session.

Browns' first drive: Electric

CLEVELAND Perhaps New Yorkers thought the awesome lightning bolt that ripped the sky and delayed the preseason opener was for them, and their new charge, Brett Favre.
Amped-up Browns fans saw it in a different light. Forget Broadway Brett, and forget the fact they fell to the Jets, 24-20. To Browns fans, that bolt was perfect punctuation for what is in store for D.A.
The first time he had the ball, Derek Anderson led the Browns on a 62-yard touchdown drive. It was the first sign Cleveland is going places, aside from the fact the announced attendance, 70,668, didn't seem like a bogus number.
Close to scoring eight plays into the opening drive, Anderson underthrew Braylon Edwards, who was covered by Darrelle Revis near the right edge of the end zone.
Edwards, who delights in rehearsing one-handed catches for training-camp audiences, made a hard pivot away from Revis, a prized cornerback who was drafted eight spots earlier than Brady Quinn in 2007. Edwards stuck out his long left arm, got a hand on the ball and reeled it in for a touchdown.

Quinn takes field earlier than expected, eventually impresses

CLEVELAND What a difference an hour makes.
When the storm hit with 4:11 left in the first quarter, the Browns first-team offense and defense were slated for one more series of work.
After a 60-minute delay, though, Head Coach Romeo Crennel decided not to risk injury to his most important men. Instead, he turned over the offense to Brady Quinn.
The No. 2 quarterback was greeted with loud cheers as he trotted onto the field. A smattering of boos arose in response, perhaps in protest against starter Derek Anderson being disrespected.
Quinn's first series was a reflection of training camp. In Berea, Quinn has struggled with the "twos" while Anderson takes most of the snaps with the No. 1 offense.
Quinn trotted out Thursday with this offensive line, from left tackle to right tackle: Undrafted rookie James Lee, undrafted rookie Derrick Morse, veteran backup Lennie Friedman, undrafted rookie Nathan Bennett and 2006 Round 4 pick Isaac Sowells, who has played one game in two years.
Quinn's skill group was better. Travis Wilson and Joshua Cribbs manned the wideout spots. Running backs Jason Wright and Jerome Harrison alternated.

Browns: Dueling QBs look sharp in defeat
Friday, August 8, 2008 3:11 AM

The Columbus Dispatch
CLEVELAND -- The Browns said all offseason that no quarterback controversy existed despite having what they consider to be two high-caliber quarterbacks. Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn started proving both sides of that judgment last night in a 24-20 home loss to the
New York Jets in an exhibition opener.
With newly acquired Jets quarterback Brett Favre watching from the sideline in street clothes, Anderson was 4 of 5 passing for 20 yards and a touchdown in his only series and Quinn went 13 of 17 for 133 yards with one interception in four possessions, three against backups.
"It felt good," said Quinn, a Dublin native. "It felt like it was supposed to feel when you're out there playing."
The Browns' first-team defense allowed two first downs and 41 yards in its only series, but it got off the field by stopping Jets starting quarterback Kellen Clemens on a fourth-and-1 sneak at the Cleveland 37-yard line.
Cleveland's starters did not return after lightning suspended play with 4:11 left in the first quarter. The delay lasted exactly one hour.

Please get him away from the Cleveland Clinic ASAP before he develops a staph infection. This is really a shame. The kid probably would have been a great contributor on special teams and would have provided some ILB depth. It seems as if one area of the team isn't hit by injuries another area will be.Rookie linebacker Beau Bell, the Browns' fourth-round pick out of UNLV, underwent arthroscopic surgery Thursday on his right knee and will be out 4-6 weeks.
