Insiders give nod to Rogers 'Big Baby' may just need coach like Romeo Crennel
Published on Thursday, Mar 13, 2008

This past week was spent making some calls to see what NFL folks thought of Shaun Rogers.
The skinny on him coming out of Detroit was not positive.
So I called a few people who work in the league, guys who know their stuff, guys most anyone would respect. And the consensus about the Browns' new defensive lineman was summed up by this comment:
''He's going to help them,'' one insider said.
Really?
''A lot,'' he said.
Wow, I thought. Those are strong words about a guy people in Detroit couldn't wait to run out of town. A guy whose nickname is ''Big Baby.''
Rogers weighed 10 pounds and 1 ounce at birth, so perhaps the nickname is literal. Unfortunately, with the Detroit Lions it stood for something else ? a guy who was described as not consistent, not a hard worker and not dependable.

Cleveland Browns turn attention to re-signing linebacker Chaun Thompson

Thursday, March 13, 2008Tony Grossi
Plain Dealer Reporter
Nearly tapped out in free-agency spending without having added any linebackers, the Browns are focusing on re-signing Chaun Thompson.
They have been negotiating to bring back the defensive role player and special teams contributor, and hope to have a two-year deal done today. Thompson, a second-round draft choice of the Browns in 2003, has not visited any other teams.
The Browns did visit Wednesday with former Denver Broncos linebacker Al Wilson, who has not played since 2006 because of neck injuries. Wilson was cleared to return in January by a back specialist.
@StoryAd
The Browns gave Wilson a physical exam Wednesday, but a team source indicated there was nothing further to report.
Wilson, 30, made the Pro Bowl five times in eight years with the Broncos before suffering a neck injury while colliding with teammate Gerard Warren, a former Brown, in the final month of the 2006 season. The Broncos released him in April 2007. He had a base salary of $5.2 million at the time.
If the Browns pass on Wilson, their options at linebacker are dwindling.

Crennel is a 'special guy'
Lerner says coach puts team in best position to win

BEREA As a rule, Randy Lerner regards answering on-the-record questions about himself as warmly as he would a hostile tax audit.

In part, that's a business decision.

Making him the story does nothing for the team he owns, the Cleveland Browns, as he sees it.

Yet he understands people are curious about, if not focused, on him.

In the context of a broad conversation about the team, he will drop his guard and reveal snippets about himself.

For example, in an interview segment about one of his top confidants, Jim Brown, Lerner mentioned how well read the Hall of Fame running back is.

What about Lerner? As a window to his mind, he is asked if he has a favorite book.

"Probably 'Elmer Gantry' would be my favorite," he says of a 1923 Sinclair Lewis novel.

Why?

"It was a great insight into the difference between what it is you think you're seeing and what it is you may actually be dealing with it," Lerner explained. "It deals with it with ... kind of humor ... and yet a pretty tough irony."

There was a bit more on the personal side, but for the most part, Lerner ? and The Repository in a detailed one-on-one interview ? stuck to chatter about his football team.

This is very interesting. They must think that Baxter could be ready to go. His leadership would definitely help in the secondary.

Cleveland Browns give Gary Baxter another chance
by Tony Grossi Plain Dealer Reporter
Thursday March 13, 2008, 3:18 PM

Cornerback Gary Baxter's attempt to come back from double patella tendon surgeries in 2006 is still alive.

Baxter, whose long-term contract was shortened after his injuries and ran out after the 2007 season, was re-signed to a one-year contract by the Browns today. They also re-signed fullback Charles Ali.
Baxter beat the odds last year by being medically cleared to return to action at the start of training camp -- nine months after surgeries on both knees. He was on the active roster for the start of the season, but did not appear in a game and was placed on injured reserve for the final 10 games.
The new contract will allow Baxter to finish the job he started.

"This is very important for me to sign a one-year deal here and to finish something I started," Baxter said in a statement released by the club. "This has been a long process but right now everything is going well and I'm going to continue my quest to make history.

I also saw on ESPN bottom line that Troy Brown was cut by the Patriots. I wonder if there would be any interest in bringing in him as a veteran CB since we are really lacking experience at that position. Don't know how much he would want.

Cleveland Browns checking out LB Al Wilson
by Tony Grossi Plain Dealer Reporter
Wednesday March 12, 2008, 1:03 PM

Former Denver linebacker Al Wilson, a five-time Pro Bowler who sat out the 2007 season with a neck injury, is taking a physical for the Browns today.
Agent Peter Schaffer confirmed Wilson was in Cleveland but would not gauge the level of interest from the Browns because he hasn't spoken to them yet.
Wilson, 30, who was a defensive captain in six of his eight years with the Broncos, was released by the team last April. He was cleared to return to the field in January by Los Angeles back specialist Dr. Bob Watkins.
Wilson, 6-0 and 240 pounds, has played his entire career as a middle linebacker in a 4-3 scheme.

Browns give Baxter new chance

By the Associated Press

Friday, March 14, 2008

CLEVELAND ? Browns defensive back Gary Baxter, determined to become the first NFL player to make it back from two torn patellar tendons, signed a one-year free agent contract with Cleveland on Thursday.
Baxter's amazing comeback fell a little short last season. He defied doctors' predictions that his career was over by returning to the practice field in July. But he never got back the strength in his knees, which he injured freakishly while defending a pass against Denver in 2006.

Browns sign Baxter, Ali By Beacon Journal staff report
POSTED: 03:02 p.m. EDT, Mar 13, 2008
The Browns signed defensive back Gary Baxter and fullback Charles Ali each to a one-year contract, the team announced Thursday.
Baxter, 6-foot-2 and 210 pounds, missed the 2007 season as he continued his rehabilitation on the patellar tendon injuries in both knees.
''Gary has shown great determination in his attempt to come back and we feel this contract will give him the opportunity to do just that here in Cleveland,'' Browns General Manager Phil Savage said in a statement. ''We look forward to having him at close to 100 percent by training camp.''
