Don't blame Colts or Titans for playoff miss

Commentary

Browns fans are in an uproar over the news that the Indianapolis Colts and Tennessee Titans colluded to let the clock run out in the final two minutes of last Sunday night's game, which allowed the Titans to beat out the Browns for the final playoff spot.
Titans backup quarterback Kerry Collins put the word out that the Colts had no intention of using their final timeout in the closing seconds, which is why Collins took a knee a couple of times rather than trying to get a first down to close out the Colts.
Why the uproar? Is there anyone out there who really thinks that if the Titans were forced to punt with about 20 seconds left, Jim Sorgi would have been able to take his team some 80 yards for a winning score?

Crennel contract talks not ongoing
Agent says he would like five-year extension, $5 million annual pay
By Marla Ridenour
Beacon Journal sportswriter

Published on Saturday, Jan 05, 2008

Coach Romeo Crennel's agent Joe Linta said he and the Browns are not in the midst of negotiations over a contract extension, although Linta would like to be.
Linta said Thursday he made one telephone call to the Browns concerning Crennel's status. Crennel, 60, signed a five-year contract in February 2005 that has two years remaining.
''It would be akin to an end-of-the-year evaluation meeting, not necessarily talking about football,'' Linta said. ''Nobody said anything about a three-year deal. It was an inquiry from me to see where we stand, 'Let's evaluate this three years into it.' ''

Plain Dealer columnist Bud Shaw says extension for Cleveland Browns coach Romeo Crennel can wait, unless it's a club option

Monday, January 07, 2008Bud Shaw
Plain Dealer Columnist
In extending Eric Wedge, the Indi ans in not so many words said that if any manager raises the World Series trophy for them in a clubhouse bubbling with champagne and salvation it'll be him.
That leap of faith didn't exactly look misplaced four games into the Boston series.
Do the Browns really feel the same about coach Romeo Crennel after one 10-6 season? Really? After three years of 20-28 football, after needing General Manager Phil Savage to remake the coaching staff?

Cleveland Browns move quickly to lock up offensive coordinator Chudzinski
Posted by Tony Grossi January 07, 2008 16:34PM
Categories: Browns
First member of the Browns to cash in on the club's surprising 10-6 season is offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski -- and not coach Romeo Crennel.
The Browns moved swiftly over the weekend to work out a two-year contract extension with Chudzinski before a scheduled job interview on Monday with the Baltimore Ravens for their head coach vacancy.
Chudzinski notified Ravens General Manager Ozzie Newsome over the weekend that he was declining the invitation to interview.
"He said the reason why was he just had a new baby and he wanted to maintain that stability there. I respect that," Newsome said.

Chudzinski's contract extension -- with an undisclosed pay increase -- runs through 2011. That's two years longer than the contracts currently in place for Crennel, General Manager Phil Savage and defensive coordinator Todd Grantham.

Grantham received a two-year extension in June through 2009. The original five-year deals for Savage and Crennel also run through 2009.
The club is expected to start negotiations soon on a new contract for Crennel. Joe Linta, Crennel's agent, has said he would seek a three-year extension for the Browns coach.

In his first year as Browns coordinator and play-caller, Chudzinski, 39, set or threatened numerous club scoring and yardage records in the 2007 season. The Browns ranked eighth in scoring and yards per game and had the franchise's third-highest totals in points (402) and net yards (5,621).
They were the only team in the NFL to have two 1,000-yard receivers (Braylon Edwards and Kellen Winslow) and a 1,000-yard rusher (Jamal Lewis). Chudzinski also presided over the development of quarterback Derek Anderson (0-3 as starter in 2006) to Pro Bowl alternate (10-5 as starter, 3,787 yards passing, 29 touchdowns and 19 interceptions).
"Romeo and I felt it was imporant to keep Rob in place as offensive coordinator to maintain our continuity on that side of the ball," Savage said in a statement released by the Browns. "He did a terrific job this year and we're looking forward to what this group can accomplish next season."

BROWNS

Rookie Thomas going to Hawaii

Wednesday, January 09, 2008 Tony Grossi

Plain Dealer Reporter
Make that three Browns going to the Pro Bowl -- and counting.
Rookie left tackle Joe Thomas was named to the AFC team on Tuesday to replace injured Jason Peters of Buffalo.
The honor completes one of the most outstanding seasons by a Browns rookie player -- let alone an offensive lineman.

Romeo, DA, and Jamal info...

The Browns plan to extend the contract of coach Romeo Crennel, as early as the next few days, Browns general manager Phil Savage said during his post-season news conference today in Berea.
"We have every intention of doing something with Romeo and we'll do right by him,'' said Savage. "Hopefully it will be addressed in the next few days. If not, then in the next few weeks.''

Savage said he's open to options, including a multi-year extension. Crennel is under contract for two more seasons.

Savage also said that Derek Anderson is the starting quarterback heading into next season. Savage said Anderson has earned the chance to be the Browns starting quarterback again in 2008, following his breakout 2007 season, in which he was named a Pro Bowl alternate.

He said the Browns feel Anderson should have "a chance to go into the batter's box and swing for the fences next years. Our expectation is that he'll hit some home runs for us.''

Savage said, in effect, that this means both Anderson and Brady Quinn are off the market for 2008. Crennel had said earlier that Anderson was the starter as of now, but that the team would listen to offers.

Savage also acknowledged that the Browns have contacted the agents for Jamal Lewis and Anderson and will begin negotiations to extend their contracts as soon as this week.

"We have a couple of different options for Derek," said Savage. "We're more apt to want to do something with Derek that would take him beyond the 2008 season. We want to go into next season with both of our quarterbacks, plus Ken Dorsey intact. We want to make sure we stay strong at that position for at least one more year."

Lewis' contract is up after this season and Anderson is set to become a restricted free agent if he's not re-signed by the end of the February. Lewis has said he'd love to be back and would be flexible on his contract structure.

I remain skeptical. This year may very well have been the result of a great Oline, receivers and easy schedule. I need more evidence that 1 year to give away the store on Romeo.

I can understand this sentiment. The impact of Chuds on O is obvious. The languishing of the D falls on Grantham's and Romeo's backs as far as I'm concerned. If they continue with the Prevent D every time they have a lead; then they lose sympathy from me more and more.

I'm still relatively shocked they even tried to fix the O-line. I mean it was only a glaring weakness since 1999.....

but that might be Chud's influence too

Romeo's contract will likely be renewed or he'll be canned after next season. Even discussing this when his team has had ONE good season where they didn't even make the playoffs or beat the Squeelers shouldn't get him anything except a chance next year to prove it wasn't a fluke.
