Cleveland Browns' good team makes great strides in 2007

Thursday, January 03, 2008
The Browns finished with a 10-6 record, and it's hard to find much fault with that.
Did the Browns blow it at Cincinnati? Was the only thing worse than Derek Anderson on that windy day the game plan that had him constantly throwing the ball? Did the Browns' defense struggle? Could they have won another game or two?
You know the answers to all those questions. But this team was still 10-6 after winning only 10 games over the previous two seasons.

Could Browns have another Jim Brown in Jamal Lewis?
Last seven games show what RB can do

BEREA It would border on blasphemous to say Jamal Lewis is Jim Brown.

Unless, maybe, you?re Jim Brown.

?His mind is the same way,? Brown said of Lewis. ?He likes the contact. We have the same tenacity. That?s the word, tenacity, that we share.?

That?s not exactly Brown saying Lewis is in his league as a talent. Brown still is regarded by many as history?s greatest running back.

However, a case can be made that Lewis is Cleveland?s most intimidating runner since Brown.

With a 128-yard rushing day in Sunday?s season finale, Lewis finished his first year in Cleveland with 1,304 rushing yards.

The last time any Brown topped 1,300 was 1965, when the Jim Brown rushed for 1,544.

2008 schedule won't be easy on Browns

BEREA The seven-man ESPN panel voting on final 2007 team rankings, first to worst, paints an ominous picture for the 2008 Browns.

One interpretation: Be on your toes or get sucker-punched.

The Browns already know everything about their 2008 schedule except where and when ? specifics will be announced in April.

Braylon, Cribbs and Anderson were all recognized as "Breakout Stars of 2007" by SI.com

Edwards: SI.com - Photo Gallery - Breakout Stars of 2007

Cribbs: SI.com - Photo Gallery - Breakout Stars of 2007

Anderson: SI.com - Photo Gallery - Breakout Stars of 2007

In 2007 Edwards made a meteoric rise from inconsistent playmaker to one of the NFL's elite receiving threats. The No. 3 overall pick in the 2005 draft, Edwards had 80 catches for 1,289 yards and 16 touchdowns. He now owns the franchise single-season record for receiving touchdowns and has posted four 100-yard games and four multi-touchdown games this season.

Like Derek Anderson, Cribbs has experienced a rags-to-riches story in his third NFL season. Undrafted out of Kent State, he has amassed a league-best 1,809 kickoff yards in 2007 with two touchdowns.

The formally unheralded quarterback, who went from third-string with Baltimore in 2005 to Cleveland's second-choice starter in Week 2, threw for 3,787 yards and 29 touchdowns (with 19 interceptions) this season. The Browns finished 10-6 and just missed the playoffs.

Ravens to interview Browns' Chudzinski Published on Friday, Jan 04, 2008

Associated Press

Browns offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski, who turned Cleveland's offense into one of the NFL's most potent attacks, will interview for the Baltimore Ravens coaching vacancy.
Browns General Manager Phil Savage confirmed late Thursday night that the Browns had granted the Ravens' interview request. It is not known when Chudzinski, 39, will meet with the Ravens, who fired Brian Billick on Monday after a lackluster 5-11 season, his ninth in Baltimore.
Under Chudzinski, the Browns had two 1,000-yard receivers (Braylon Edwards, Kellen Winslow) and a 1,000-yard rusher (Jamal Lewis). Quarterback Derek Anderson, who began the season as a backup, threw 29 touchdown passes.

Coach makes players believe first-game loss something they could survive Published on Friday, Jan 04, 2008

I spent some time talking to an NFL type the other day, a guy who works in the league.
Some might call him a ''background source.'' I call him a friend, someone I have known for some time and respect and trust.
He doesn't want his name used in this story because it would make his wife angry or something. So I agreed.
I asked him a question: Other than talent, what was the key reason for the Browns' turnaround this season?
''Romeo Crennel,'' he said.

Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski will interview with Baltimore Ravens

Friday, January 04, 2008 Mary Kay Cabot

Plain Dealer Reporter
Browns offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski will interview for the Baltimore Ravens head-coaching position, General Manager Phil Savage said Thursday.
It is not known when the interview will take place. The Ravens on Monday fired Brian Billick after nine seasons.
Chudzinski, in his first year with the Browns, helped develop the Cleveland offense into one of the best in the NFL. The Browns ranked eighth in the league with an average of 25.1 points and 351.3 yards per game. One reason for their success was quarterback Derek Anderson, who was fifth in the NFL with 29 touchdown passes.

You've obviously spent little time reading up on what Anderson did as a Beaver. Wiki sums it up best:

Derek Anderson (American football) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
You are correct. I have not spent a great deal of time reading what Anderson did while you is a college QB. The majority of my information came from listening to professional people on Browns TV and radio shows. I do not think Wiki offers objective opinions.

He also led the team to an 11-1 record in 2000 and won the Fiesta Bowl.
He was 2-1 in Bowl games with a 27-11 collegiate record.
I am glad that Oregon State football program did well while he was there. He must have had a pretty good supporting cast.:)

And this has what to do with the cost of tea in China? There are tons of good/great quarterbacks who weren't heard of in college. And there are tons of good/great college quarterbacks who were shit in the pros.

If I were you, I would start using a better analogy than "the cost of tea in China". You might want to take that to the Political Forum because China owns a great deal of United States property.
He was waived by Baltimore for a reason and by great QB genius they must have a reason to let him go.
He was a successful college quarterback.

I could give a shit about who the Browns decide to go with, but try better to not present disinformation about DA as a collegiate quarterback
.
If you do not give it a "shit" why do you bother checking on all of my information. He was a up-and-down QB while he was at Oregon State. Talk to someone who saw him play while he was there and just do not go on statistics.

One name: Albert Haynesworth
Word is that the Titans will put the "franchise" tag on him. Suggs from Baltimore is a FA and the Ravens do not have much cap space. Suggs would be a good complement to Wembley but we would still need a good run stuffing DE and there are not many free-agent DEs out there. All Buckeye fans should be interested in the fact that Vrabel is a free agent.

Vrabel is a linebacker in the 3-4...still doesn't help us with our lack of a run stuffing DE.

I guess I don't understand why many of you guys/girls do not think Quinn will be a "good" professional QB. Anderson was not a very good QB in college. It would be interesting to know how many of you who are bashing Quinn had ever heard of Anderson while he was playing at Oregon State. He was very up-and-down even in his college career and in my eyes he has been up-and-down with the Browns this past season especially against Oakland, Arizona, New England, and yes, even Cincinnati.

Maybe it would be nice to sign him to a long-term contract but I still would like to see what Quinn could do if he played with the same lineup on offense that Anderson played with this past season. I think we should tender him and if someone makes a decent offer that would get us into the first round along with another draft pick that him go. He is not the next Brian Sipe. He is a QB with a rocket arm and that's about it.

Against five teams who had a combined record of 24-56 Anderson threw 15 TDs and had a QB rating of 122.5. Against the 10 other teams that he played against he threw 14 TDs, 16 INT's, and had a QB rating of 68.57. If there were not for the Cincinnati game, his QB rating would be in the low 70s instead of the low 80s. Let's not forget, he also played against some of the worst defenses in the NFL.

Which is it, use stats or not?
I'm far from a Browns fan but Anderson didn't miss the field goal in the Raiders game, he put them in position to win by driving them 68 yards in 1:04 with no timeouts.

Anderson didn't waste 2 timeouts after a late td in the Steelers game. He had to spike the ball 3 times during the last drive because he had no timeouts, but got them in position to kick a fg.

He drove them 45 yards against Arizona with no timeouts in 1:48 and lost on a questionable non call of the pass to Winslow.

Maybe they'll learn to hold onto their timeouts next year.

29 td's 19ints for a guy basically in his first season as a starter is pretty damn good. I'd bet anything those int's come down next year.

No one will give a first for him now, but maybe after next season.

If you have him after next season, you are going to have to sign in to some type of contract. Tendering will only keep him here through next season. How much money and how many years well he want for a "long-term" contract.
I was using his professional numbers. Not his numbers from his college career.

I presented Wiki so that you could see the numerical data. As for objectivity, I don't see much difference between Wiki and professional people.

As is the case with most successful quarterbacks. There are few "do-it-all" people.

It's called "irrelevancy". Your presented a fallacy; hence, my statement.

And since we're doling out suggestions, here's mine for you: next time you decide to critique someone, then I suggest you back it up with data; not the opinions of others. :wink2:

The same "genius" who just got canned. Furthermore, with Savage having been a part of the draft team that brought Anderson in; then there's a good chance that he saw (and sees) promise.

LB said:

Just because I don't care which direction the Browns go doesn't mean that I am going to let those who are ignorant spout off something that's false as though it's fact. You were wrong (and are wrong) in your summation of DA as a collegiate QB.

LB said:

Sure. If your definition of "up and down" is a winning bowl record, 2nd most passing yards in the Pac 10 all time, and the TD record at OSU with 78. Yes, he threw interceptions, but a good professional QB coach can help with that.

I live 45 minutes north of Corvalis, jackass. I talk to people everyday who followed DA's collegiate career. I even work with a guy that knew him in highschool. My degree of separation from an informed opinion is much less than yours.

With foundation in place, Savage sees bright future for Browns

Saturday, January 5, 2008 3:06 AM
By James Walker

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

BEREA, Ohio -- At the beginning of training camp, Cleveland Browns general manager Phil Savage made a comment that proved prophetic.
"We're excited about what is going to happen this year," Savage said. "We feel like we are really going to make some progress and it's just a matter of time before the Browns are a legitimate, contending team."
The statement rang hollow at the time. The Browns were coming off a 4-12 season, and coach Romeo Crennel was on the hot seat. But with Savage's vision and shrewd moves, the Browns made a turnaround, winning 10 games and just missing the playoffs in the duo's third season.

NFL notebook: Crennel seeks three-year extension from Browns

Saturday, January 5, 2008 3:03 AM

Cleveland Browns coach Romeo Crennel is seeking a three-year contract extension with the team, said his agent, Joe Linta.
Crennel completed the third year of a five-year contract and is coming off a 10-6 season.
"It was really me calling them and just saying, 'Romeo is in his third year and he's obviously turned the program around. Is this going to be the guy that's going to be the face of the franchise and is he sticking around here for a long time?' " Linta said. "Obviously, if they don't end up doing something with him (within the next year), he'll end up becoming a lame duck."
