Defense needs to improve, too

BEREA ? Sure, the Browns were disappointed in their starting quarterback Sunday. So much so that they traded Charlie Frye to Seattle ? as far away as they possibly could.
But while Frye and the offense struggled in a 34-7, season-opening loss to Pittsburgh, the defense wasn't much better, yielding four touchdown passes and failing to stop the Steelers early in the third quarter when the score was still somewhat respectable.

Heads, you're the starter. Tails, you're traded to Seattle.
Who needs Letterman and Leno when you have Browns general manager Phil Savage? The Browns boss has been in the NFL a long time and has some football knowledge.

Ex-Brown Andruzzi battles cancer

Friday, September 14, 2007 Mark Pratt

Associated Press
Boston- Former Cleveland Browns guard Joe Andruzzi battled some of the toughest, meanest and nastiest defensive lineman in a 10-year NFL career.
None came close to the aggressive but treatable form of cancer he's fighting now.
Andruzzi, who won three Super Bowl titles with New England before signing with the Browns as a free agent in 2005, was diagnosed in May with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma - cancer of the cells of the lymphatic system - and has returned to the Boston area for treatment at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

BEREA -- The Browns are hopeful they fixed one problem by making Derek Anderson the starting quarterback. Plugging one of the other holes that erupted in the dike during the deflating 34-7 opening loss might not be as easy.

As stunning as anything that happened last Sunday was Ben Roethlisberger carving up the Browns secondary with four passing touchdowns. He made it look easy, too, throwing one to Hines Ward, one to Santonio Holmes, one to Heath Miller and one to Matt Spaeth.

Crennel acknowledges stealing signs common
JEFF SCHUDEL, Morning Journal Writer
09/14/2007

BEREA -- Coach Romeo Crennel does not want to comment specifically about charges against the Patriots for allegedly videotaping signals given by the Jets coaches last Sunday, but sign stealing goes on frequently in the NFL, he said.

Crennel referred to the conventional method of watching and trying to decipher what play is being called by the hand gestures of an assistant. The Patriots are accused of taking the piracy a step further. A Patriots employee was caught taping the Jets coaches last Sunday. The camera and tape were confiscated by the NFL.

Browns look to boost failing grade

Friday, September 14, 2007 3:35 AM
By James Walker

The Columbus Dispatch

BEREA, Ohio - Center Hank Fraley gave the Cleveland offense the lowest possible grade after its performance against the Pittsburgh Steelers, saying the Browns played their "F game."
That leads Fraley and his teammates to believe they have nowhere to go but up Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals.
The Browns had 221 total yards, including 62 in the first half, in a 34-7 loss to the Steelers in their opener. The blame can't be placed solely on quarterbacks Charlie Frye and Derek Anderson, who were sacked six times. The running game gained 46 yards.

NFL
Bungling Browns stuck in rut like Bengals of '90s

Sunday, September 16, 2007 4:06 AM
By James Walker

The Columbus Dispatch

BEREA, Ohio -- Ugly losses, poor drafts, coaching instability and a losing mentality.

These words described the Cincinnati Bengals in the 1990s. Today, it describes the Cleveland Browns.
Although the Browns are in their ninth season since rejoining the NFL in 1999, a strong case can be made that the new Browns are the old Bengals.
The in-state, AFC North rivals will meet today in Cleveland Browns Stadium, with the Bengals heavily favored. They have won five straight in the series.
But it wasn't long ago when Cincinnati was experiencing misery.
The Bengals were the laughingstock of the NFL before the arrival of coach Marvin Lewis and quarterback Carson Palmer. Cincinnati's first playoff appearance in 15 years came in 2005, and the Bengals have been respectable ever since.
