Browns chat up QB, but why?

Raiders' 3rd-stringer visits, as does Mahan, guard from Tampa Bay

By Patrick McManamon

Beacon Journal sportswriter

A curious offseason in free agency continued on Monday as the Browns entertained a third-team quarterback who couldn't cut it with the Oakland Raiders.
Marques Tuiasosopo spent the day in Berea, according to various reports (the Browns, curiously, do not confirm free-agent visits). Tuiasosopo was the Raiders' third quarterback in 2006, playing behind Aaron Brooks and Andrew Walter.

Browns entertain two more free agents

Posted by Mary Kay Cabot March 05, 2007 14:59PM

Categories: Browns

The Browns hosted two more free agents today, guard/center Sean Mahan of the Tampa Bay Bucs and quarterback Marques Tuiasosopo of the Raiders, a source said Monday.
Mahan, a fifth-year pro, has started at left guard, right guard and center for the Bucs. He started 12 games at left guard in 2006 and 16 games at right guard in 2005. He would most likely replace Browns free agent Cosey Coleman, who's not expected to return.
Mahan is scheduled to visit the Seahawks on Tuesday if the Browns don't sign him, but they are expected to make a strong push. He would be paired with guard Eric Steinbach, who signed a seven-year, $49.5 million deal on Friday. Mahan (6-3, 301), was originally a fifth-round pick out of Notre Dame in 2003.

At least Browns get one starter

Tuesday, March 06, 2007Tony Grossi
Plain Dealer Reporter
Browns General Manager Phil Savage speculated last week he may sign only two or three players in free agency this year. He did that in the first three days of the signing period.
If all three were slam-dunk starters, Savage could take a bow and retreat to intense draft preparations. But the only slam-dunk starter acquired was guard Eric Steinbach. Outside line backer Antwan Peek and cor nerback Ken Wright - each of whom played for Houston when defensive coordinator Todd Grantham coached there - figure to be role players.
At least in Steinbach the Browns nabbed one of the hand ful of premier players available. His signing would pack more of a wallop if they can pair him on the left side with Wisconsin tackle Joe Thomas in the draft.

CANTON TWP. Paul Brown?s Bengals got smacked in the mouth as an expansion outfit, going 19-36-1 in their first four years.

They smacked back, going 36-20 over the next four years, before Brown retired from coaching and ran all other aspects of the franchise.

Marvin Lewis, the Bengals? head coach now, touched on the plight of the expansion Cleveland Browns on Monday during a stop at the Hall of Fame Luncheon Club. Brown?s granddaughter, Bengals salary cap coordinator Katie Blackburn, listened from the head table as he spoke.

The Browns attended the pro day of Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn on Sunday and came away impressed. Most of the team's top brass made the trip, including Savage, owner Randy Lerner and coach Romeo Crennel. In a workout conducted by Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis, a good friend of Crennel's, Quinn impressed the Browns. He didn't run or interview with teams. "The fact he could make all his throws, both right and left, he's a polished quarterback," Crennel told the Associated Press. Quinn is one of the players the Browns are considering with the No. 3 overall pick in the April 28-29 NFL draft. - Mary Kay Cabot, Cleveland Plain Dealer

Sounded like a spin-job to me. "We lost Steinbach, but we didn't want him anyway." I agree on the TE issue, but that's about it.

No not really, they had said before gree agency ever started that steinback wasn't in the plans. He was going to want tomuch money and the bengals knew they couldn't get him under the cap. As Lewis said in the article, paying big money for g's and te's isn't going to win you championships.

i like quinn to the browns at three...i definitely dont think frye is the answer...but there are a lot of needs they could fill at that position: LT(thomas), QB[quinn or russell(though i doubt hes there)], RB(peterson), or even WR(johnson). cant go wrong with any of those in my opinion.

I agree with all that, but the way it's phrased -- they lost Steinbach because the Browns are stupid enough to pay a little money for a Guard. Nevermind San Diego and Dielman or Minny and Hutchinson.
The entire article is just a dig at Steinbach and the Browns organization.

No he actually commented on all teams that pay that...noticed he mentiond san deigo also with Gates and kansas city.

here is a qoute from the article

“If you look around the league at teams with tight ends, they have no wide receivers. It’s ironic that way. Name me a Kansas City wide receiver. Or a San Diego wide receiver. Yet they have these tights ends who are demanding high salaries.

“You end up getting out of function a little bit.”

Good lord, another Brady Quinn advocate. Luckily you saved some face with mentioning Thomas and Peterson. I don't think drafting a WR that early again is wise regardless of how good he is supposed to be.

We're not talking about TEs. We're talking about Guards. Steinbach is a Guard.
And I already said I agree with them on the TE issue.
