Classic movies you've never seen

OilerBuck

Sweet Crude
...This thread is kind of the opposite of the "Best movies people might not have seen...." one.

I want to preface this by saying that I've historically been more of a comedy movie guy. For some reason, as a kid, I could never pay attention long enough to watch anything that I wasn't splitting a side over.

Well, I just started really getting into all types of movies several years ago but never got around to watching some that have already been out. I've recently been on a quest to watch classic movies that I've never seen before. It's amazing to discover these movies all at once. In just the last few weeks, I've seen these movies for the very first time:

The Godfather
The entire Indiana Jones Series
The Usual Suspects
Braveheart
Gladiator

I was blown away by all of them and am going to continue my quest. This all got me thinking...What "classic" movies haven't you seen?

Oiler - if you're looking for classic movies, check out some of these from the 40's, 50's, 60's, and 70's:

Casablanca (Bogart, Bergman)
Maltese Falcon (Bogart)
The Big Sleep (Bogart, Bacall)
Key Largo (Bogart, Bacall)
Treasure of the Sierra Madre (Bogart)

Strangers on a Train (Hitchcock)
North by Northwest (Hitchcock)
Rear Window (Hitchcock)
Vertigo (Hitchcock)
Psycho (Hitchcock)

Lawrence of Arabia
French Connection
On the Waterfront
Some Like It Hot
Dr. Strangelove
The Third Man
All About Eve
Chinatown
Goldfinger
Shane

There are many more.

Greatest Films

I've seen most of the classics, but I'd like to watch the Godfather series in sequence at one sitting.

Thanks LJB,

I've wanted to watch a few of those pretty, but when I'm in the movie rental store I keep getting caught in the stigma that newer is better.

I'm definately going to check a few out...Starting with Casablanca.

Ft. Collins,

You've GOT to see Braveheart. I thought I was going to be disappointed by it because people had built it up so much...but it was great.

IMPORTANT SIDE NOTE: Hotel Rwanda was AWESOME and will be a classic soon. WATCH IT!

I've managed to see all 100 of the American Film Institute's list of Top-100 films of all time, which they published a few years ago. I've also completed the list for Top-100 Thrillers, and am only missing 5 of the Top-100 Comedies, I just checked the lists.

Other classics not on LJB's list:

Gaslight
Double Indemnity
Rope (Hitchcock)
The Best Years of Our Lives
The Searchers (John Ford)

Original Star Wars trilogy (I was sheltered as a child, and decided when Episode I came out that I'd just wait and watch them in story-order. I haven't got around to catching Episode III yet.
Godfather trilogy
Scarface
Reservoir Dogs
pretty much any classic horror movie (not a fan of the genre)
The Matrix trilogy (on principle alone)
A Clockwork Orange

I've always wanted to see Cool Hand Luke... I always catch it on when it's in the middle of the movie and I want to see it from the begining. I've never seen Gone With the Wind or Casablanca.

Anyone who wants to watch Casablanca can catch it at 2:00 PM today on TCM. After that, they will be showing Fort Apache and She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, two classic John Ford Westerns starring John Wayne. These are all great films and you won't want to miss them if you're a fan of classic movies.

BTW, I've never seen E.T. or Titanic. And I have no interest in either.

I'll be honest, for the most part I don't like/watch pre-1960 films. Yes, there a few exceptions-Paths of Glory, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington-but the acting and phrasing of the actors just seems fake to me. I guess method actors like DeNiro changed my perception of acting before I considered anything else. Of that list above, I have only seen Dr. Strangelove, Psycho, and Goldfinger. I do, however, want to watch The Wild Bunch soon.

I'll never be able to sit down and watch a movie in the afternoon due to the kids... the only thing I'll be watching is Thomas The Tank :(. I think I'll set the DVR to record it... I can watch it later, thanks for the heads up.
