High School Cincinnati Colerain Cardinals

Cardinals hold off Big Blue | Cincinnati.com | The Cincinnati Enquirer

Colerain senior linebacker Tyon Dixon has blocked punts before, but none bigger than his Thursday-night special.

Colerain rallied on the road to beat Hamilton 27-16 on a rainy night, with Dixon throwing the knockout punch.

With 11:09 left and Colerain, the No. 5 team in the Enquirer Division I area coaches' poll, clinging to a 20-16 lead, Hamilton was backed up and punting from its end zone. Dixon charged through the line, blocked the punt and recovered the ball for a touchdown.

Bingo - Colerain was up 27-16. The Cardinals, who at one point trailed 16-7, then held off the Big Blue in a game televised regionally by Fox Sports Ohio

"I blocked one when I was a sophomore," Dixon said. "This was big. I was looking to execute what the coaches always teach us on that play, and we did it."

Colerain vs. Northmont

WHEN/WHERE: 8:15 p.m. Saturday at Nippert Stadium

WHAT TO WATCH: Colerain has athleticism on both sides of the ball but must avoid turnovers. This will be the debut of senior Tyler Williams at quarterback for the Cardinals. Colerain also returns fullback Trayion Durham and linebacker Jarrett Grace, who has committed to Notre Dame. Northmont's players to watch include senior wide receiver Josh McClain and junior linebacker Kaleb Ringer, who has early offers from UC and Iowa.

BOTTOM LINE: Colerain's talent gives it the edge.

BuckeyeGrove.com - Preview: Elder at Colerain (free)

The FOX19 Friday Prep Rally makes it way to Cardinal Stadium for a West Side showdown between the Colerain Cardinals and the Elder Panthers.

Elder, who moved up three spots in the rankings to No. 3 this week, defeated Winton Woods handedly in its first game.

The Panthers beat the Cardinals the past two seasons, but if they are going to do it this time they'll have to accomplish it at Colerain.

PLAYERS TO WATCH
This week's matchup is stacked with stellar players across the field. Few have the potential to make an impact on the game's outcome that Elder's Ben Coffaro possesses. The senior exploded in last week's season-opening win over Winton Woods by catching five balls for 137 yards and picking up another 90 yards on the ground while scoring three touchdowns. Colerain arguably fields the Tri-state's top trio of linebackers in seniors Andrew Smith and Jarrett Grace as well as junior Joe Bolden. All three are major Division I prospects and collectively they possess a great challenge for the Elder offense.

This is probably one of the most dangerous teams in the state! That triple option is working at a high octane now with Williams at QB! I went to the Elder game and they have some serious speed on both sides of the ball. Williams can fly, and Durham is just enormous compared to the other players(I think he was honestly bigger than some Elder linemen, lol). The other 2 RBs, I think Jester and Dukes were also very good all around players who can play as well. And the D is led by their 3 stellar LBs. It will be interesting to see them play some other teams around the state

Playing #24 nationally ranked Cocoa (FL) right now. Offensive has had some success but false starts just killed their 2nd drive. Defense looked good in the 1st series shutting down Cocoa's running game.

Cocoa has won 3 straight state titles in Florida (4a division out of an 8 division setup) and have won 36 straight overall. Colerain has not lost at home since September of 1999 (that's not a type) so one streak ends today.

And as I'm typing this, Colerain (Bolden) just faked the punt at midfield and completed a pass that got them down inside the 10. Fullback just punched it in from the 7 so the Cardinals are up 7-0. 13 seconds left in 1st quarter.

Colerain is one of the most aggressive high school teams I've ever seen, especially on defense.

Hawkins just commented on this. He said watching their defense is just a red swarm of players flying to the football.

On a sidenote: #52 for Cocoa has been pretty impressive at LB. He's had 2 sacks and a number of stops defensively.
