High School Cincinnati Colerain Cardinals

The Enquirer - 1st season 'awesome' for Cards' coach

While a great season continues for St. Xavier, another has ended for Colerain and first-year head coach Tom Bolden.

Following Colerain's 29-14 loss to St. X in the Division I, Region 4 championship game Friday at Nippert Stadium, Bolden reflected on his first season at the helm of the Cardinals.

"I couldn't ask for anything more," he said. "Well, I guess I could ask for more - beating St. X. But it was an awesome experience. The kids were great. Unfortunately, my heart goes out to my 36 seniors."

A battle at the top

Nos. 1, 2 in area, they clash in opener tonight
By Tom Groeschen • [email protected] • August 22, 2008

St. Xavier and Colerain are the reigning behemoths of local high school football, and their ongoing testosterone war takes center stage in a season opener tonight.

The defending state champion Bombers (15-0 last year) will face the Cardinals (12-1) in a Skyline Chili Crosstown Showdown game at UC's Nippert Stadium at 8:15 p.m. The programs have combined to win three of the past four Division I state titles (Colerain 2004, St. Xavier 2005 and '07).

St. Xavier is ranked No. 1 and Colerain No. 2 in the preseason Enquirer Division I area coaches' poll. Nationally, St. Xavier is rated No. 18 by USA Today.

Colerain 13, St. Xavier 8

Colerain is still Colerain: No. 2 Cardinals hand No. 1 Bombers first defeat since '06

By Tom Groeschen ? [email protected] ? August 23, 2008

Colerain football players and coaches were pleased to pick up their Friday morning Enquirer, in which all the forecasters had picked the Cardinals to lose to St. Xavier.
Colerain proved itself alive and well in beating the Bombers 13-8 to open the season Friday night, as the Cincinnati superpowers battled before an estimated 15,000 fans at UC's Nippert Stadium.
"A bunch of people were doubting us," said Colerain senior offensive lineman Brandon White. "I think this will open a lot of eyes. It's a huge thing for us to show that Colerain football is still here."
St. Xavier is No. 1 in the Enquirer Division I coaches' poll and No. 18 in the USA Today national poll. Colerain, No. 2 in the Enquirer poll, has not been mentioned in most national polls.

I don't know if this a violation of any BP rules but I hope not...

me and a few of my buddies (also Colerain alumni) run a small website for Colerain football.

You can get weekly updates, picture galleries, video interviews with head coach Tom Bolden and weekly highlight videos. Feel free to check it out and give feedback if you'd like. We are amatuers but we decided to do this because there was not any one place to find Colerain info on the web and it was really unbecoming of a program that is usually nationally ranked.

Thanks. H&G

Bolden: Colerain can't wait to take field
Posted by mikedyer at 7/21/2009 9:05 AM EDT on Cincinnati.com

Colerain football coach Tom Bolden said Monday he's "all fired up" about this upcoming season for the Cardinals. Colerain has seven returning starters on offense and six on defense.

The Cardinals return senior QB Greg Tabar and junior running backs Trayion Durham (1,170 yards) and Tyler Williams (1,333 yards).

"I like our athleticism and our team speed," Bolden said. "I think we are overall as fast as we've ever been from a team standpoint."

Bolden said he believes his team is more experienced heading into this season as the Cardinals played in 13 games last fall. Bolden has been impressed with Tabar's leadership ability during the offseason. Tabar has been effective working under pressure on the field, Bolden said.

"He doesn't get flustered," Bolden said.

Defensively, senior LB Tyon Dixon (oral commitment to Louisville), junior LB Jarrett Grace (offer from UC), junior CB Chris Dukes and senior safety Bam Harrison are among the leaders. Sophomore linebackers Jake Blust and Joe Bolden will also be key.

"I am really excited about the defense," Bolden said. "The speed is phenomenal."

Colerain has already started its workouts and will be at a team camp at UC this weekend before two-a-days begin Aug. 3.

Bolden said he and his players are looking forward to starting the season Aug. 28. Bolden said he can still close his eyes and remember how it felt walking off the field at Nippert Stadium after last season's overtime loss to Elder in the Division I regional final.

Colerain will open the season Aug. 28 against St. Xavier (8:30 p.m.) at Nippert Stadium. The Cardinals play at Elder Sept. 6 at noon on ESPN.

Colerain

Division: I

Coach: Tom Bolden (23-3)

Last year: 11-2 (6-1)

Last league title: 2008

Players to watch: Senior QB Greg Tabar (threw for 616 yards and six touchdowns and rushed for 979 yards and 18 touchdowns); junior FB Trayion Durham (1,170 yards and nine touchdowns); junior RB Tyler Williams (1,333 yards and 17 touchdowns); senior LB Tyon Dixon (committed to Louisville and had 3? sacks); junior LB Jarrett Grace (scholarship offer from UC); junior CB Chris Dukes; senior safety Bam Harrison; senior OL Brandon Good.

Other key players: Sophomore LB Jake Blust; sophomore LB Joe Bolden.

Outlook: With seven returning starters on offense and six on defense, Colerain has the talent to compete with the best teams in the state. "I like our athleticism and our team speed," Tom Bolden said. "I think we are overall just as fast as we've ever been from a team standpoint." Colerain has won the league outright for three consecutive years. The first two weeks this fall - against St. Xavier and Elder - should provide a barometer for this team. "Our first two games are the toughest beginning to any season we have had here at Colerain," Bolden said.

among others....

Hamilton is leading 9-0 with 11 minutes left in the 2nd quarter, but Colerain is driving inside the 5....

Strike that. TD Colerain for Tyler Williams on the option. Now 9-7 Hamilton.
