I can't believe that I'm left with the Bungles being my only thing to look forward to during football season...

I know the training camp reports from the team site are always overly optimistic, but apparently the coaches are very excited about our rookie LBs (Wilson and Davis-Gaithers) and think they're ready to play right away. I hope that's true because it needs to be true for our defense to stand a chance. I think the DL is going to be pretty good with adding Reader to Atkins, Hubbard, Dunlap and Lawson. I'm also cautiously optimistic on the secondary. I think a group of Jackson III, Waynes, Alexander, Bates, Bell and Williams could be a good secondary, especially if the front 7 gets the job done.
On the offensive side, Green is glowing in his remarks on Burrow, as are the coaches. Obviously, I think the world of Burrow and think he can be one of the best in the league if he has the help he needs. In a world where Rona has cancelled about everything, about the only thing I'm excited about in the sports world is seeing Burrow play whether we suck or not. There's plenty of weapons around him if we stay healthy that has to get you excited even if you're a downtrodden and doomsday naysaying Bengal like me... Green is back, Higgins should be legit and I loved that pick, Boyd has been great the last couple seasons, and if the contract issue ends Mixon is one of the best in the league. Tate and Erickson can definitely contribute and provide great depth, those two were one of the few bright spots of last season. Ross has one more year to break through, not holding my breath though. I think everyone is well aware that the OL has to drastically improve for Joe to stand any chance though. On that end, the staff has certainly tried to improve. Jonah Williams HAS to be the 1st round pick we drafted him with to protect Burrow on the blind side... after complete whiffs on Oghbei and Fisher a handful of years back, and what might be culminating to the same fate with Price, we can't have yet another first round miss on the OL. On Price, reports are he's way more comfortable at guard and hopefully he thrives there... could have two Ohio State guards starting with Price and Jordan, though I think Price will be the 6th man who can rotate on the interior, as Su-Filo is the likely starter opposite of Jordan. Su-Filo wasn't exactly a pro bowler in his start with the NFL, but I think he'll be an improvement. Hopkins is solid at center and played well last year taking over at center. What my real concern is with Hart at RT... why the staff thinks he is an NFL starter is truly beyond me. And we have no proven depth at tackle. But I think the OL can get it done this year if we stay healthy.

I think Taylor stood no chance at any success last year with the roster we had, both in terms of huge holes on the roster that were exacerbated by the most injuries I've ever seen on a team. But there weren't a whole lot of blowouts and the team was obviously fighting hard even at the end of the year when it was clearly over, so that is a positive. I do think that with Taylor's background coaching QBs and his creative and uptempo offensive style, Burrow is going to have his time to shine if the pieces fall in place on the OL. On the defensive side, there has to be drastic improvement, as that might have been the worst defense I've seen in Cincy, which is truly saying something. But in the coaches' defense, they totally overhauled the defensive side with huge free agency moves that the franchise has never done. Adding Reader, Bynes, Waynes, Bell and Alexander were all big moves. Reader is a legit pro bowler next to another pro bowler in Atkins, which makes you feel great about our interior DL. Bynes is a steady player with a lot of experience in the AFC North. The secondary guys I'm a little sheepish on, but they're going to be an improvement on the DB unit we had last year. The No. 1 overall pick and reigning Heisman Trophy winner, Burrow was tabbed as one of the Bengals' seven captains on Wednesday, joining receiver A.J. Green, running back Giovani Bernard, linebacker Josh Bynes, defensive backs Vonn Bell and Shawn Williams, and punter Kevin Huber.
Burrow, who will start at quarterback when the Bengals host the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, said that being named a team captain was one of his goals entering his rookie season.
"I really didn't expect to be a captain, but I couldn't be happier to represent our team and our offense," Burrow said during a virtual meeting with the media. "We have a lot of guys who could have been [named captain], but I'm happy that my team decided that I should be the one to get that honor."
