Cincinnati Bengals (Same Ole Bengals)

Glad to hear Hamlin at least has a chance, based on the reactions of the players I thought it was over. Really a sad thing to see unfold. The game will not be resumed this week and we'll play Baltimore next as scheduled. Kind of a curious decision, my thought was resume play tonight or Wednesday and just push the Baltimore game back to Sunday or Monday.

I think it was absolutely the right call to postpone the game last night under the circumstances and let the players take a break to collect their thoughts for at least last night, but it is a pretty damn important game to just cancel...NFL hasn't said that is the case but if it is not played this week, pretty sure it will not happen with the upcoming schedule. They're not going to postpone the playoffs for the game. Another odd component is that most fantasy leagues (I mention this last because it is the least important consideration) had their championship game this weekend and rostered a lot of Bengals and Bills. I was in the title game with Mixon, Diggs and the Buffalo D/ST and well within striking range...no idea what to even do with that and neither do the fantasy sites.

Obviously the biggest concern is Hamlin's health and it was a really hard thing to watch happen. Calling the game for last night was the right thing to do and I don't see it being debatable. However, I don't see how you cannot finish this game at some point with all that was at stake. And if you do, resuming it right where you left off 7-3, same field position, time on the clock, etc.

Does anyone know how this works if the game is not rescheduled? For instance, if we lose to Baltimore this week what happens to the AFC North title? Both teams would have 11 wins in that scenario and Baltimore would have more losses, but would have beaten us twice. And if Buffalo loses and we win, who gets the two seed? Kind of an unprecedented situation.

Bengals would win AFC North based on best record.

Two Clubs
  1. Head-to-head, if applicable.
  2. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the conference.
  3. Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games, minimum of four.
  4. Strength of victory in all games.
  5. Strength of schedule in all games.
  6. Best combined ranking among conference teams in points scored and points allowed in all games.
  7. Best combined ranking among all teams in points scored and points allowed in all games.
  8. Best net points in conference games.
  9. Best net points in all games.
  10. Best net touchdowns in all games.
  11. Coin toss.

They will both would have the same record (12-4), no head to head game, both would have the same conference record (8-3), and (according to my calculations) both would have the record against common opponents (8-3); so it would come down to "strength of victory"*.

* It is calculated by combining the winning percentage of the opponents a team has beaten. When two teams end up with identical records after the regular season, they combine the records of the opponents in each of the team's wins and calculate the total winning percentage.

Yikes, Bengals' NFC conquests were the horrible South division... The Bills played the North, which has slightly better records even without including the Vikings who beat them. Both beat the Chefs.

Thank you @ScriptOhio that is an interesting way of determining it. Basically if the Bills win they get a higher seed, because I think it is highly doubtful they end up playing this game with the upcoming playoff schedule...no way they push playoff games for a regular season game, even if it was an important one. But in more positive news, sounds like Hamlin keeps improving in the hospital.

NFL Decides Bills-Bengals ‘MNF’ Game Will Not Resume, per Report

Entire article: https://www.si.com/nfl/2023/01/05/nfl-decision-bills-bengals-game

AP sources: NFL will not resume Bills-Bengals game

The NFL will not resume the Bills-Bengals game that was suspended Monday night after Buffalo safety Damar Hamlin collapsed and went into cardiac arrest on the field, two people familiar with the decision told The Associated Press on Thursday.

Both people spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the league is still figuring out how to determine playoff seedings and scheduling. The NFL Players Association must approve changes.

Hamlin has shown what physicians treating him are calling “remarkable improvement over the past 24 hours,” the team announced Thursday, three days after the 24-year-old player had to be resuscitated on the field.

The Bills-Bengals game had major playoff implications.

Buffalo (12-3) entered Monday night needing a win to maintain the AFC’s No. 1 seed. The Kansas City Chiefs (13-3) now hold that spot. The Bengals (11-4) had a chance to earn that top seed with two more wins and a loss by the Chiefs.

The league is considering various scenarios. A decision is expected no later than Friday.

Seedings could be determined by winning percentage. In that case, the Chiefs would remain in the top spot with a victory over the Las Vegas Raiders on Saturday.

The Bills lost a thrilling overtime game at Kansas City in the divisional round last year. They beat the Chiefs 24-20 in Kansas City in October to earn a tiebreaker advantage for the No. 1 seed and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.

Adding an eighth playoff team to the field in both conferences and giving the top two teams a first-round bye is perhaps the most intriguing among the many possibilities.

Welp, since we have no control over anything might as well Baltimore and see what happens. Regardless, we have the locked the AFC North right?

Correct, but may get zero benefit from it if they lose to the Ravens and lost the coin flip. But they’ll still get the first place schedule next year. Gee, thanks NFL. So, go beat the Rats and lockup that first round home game. Lose to them twice, then I don’t really see much room for complaint about playing them on the road.

What bothers me more is that, assuming the Bills, Chiefs, and Bengals all win this weekend and then the Bills and Bengals win in the first round, the Bengals will go to Buffalo to play the 2nd round game. No coin flip there. The Bengals had a chance to beat the Bills at home so that they could host the game, but that was wiped away. The 2nd round road game in Buffalo is the same result as if the Bengals had lost at home to the Bills, so the Bills end up getting the benefit of not having to win the road game in Cincy in order to get the home field advantage over Cincy. It pretty much sucks for Cincy on all counts.

The frustrating part is that there ARE rules in place for this situation and that is win %. They are wiping that away when it comes to Bengals-Ravens where it can only hurt the Bengals, but keeping it in place for Buffalo-Cincy where it ALSO can only hurt the Bengals.

EDIT - I'm really not terribly angry about it. Big picture -- you gotta win the game you play, whoever and wherever it is. It just stings to be on the wrong end of everything here when the Bengals did absolutely nothing wrong.

There's another aspect to this that ought to be addressed....

This vote for changing the rules in what amounts to mid-season was a direct slap in the face to the Brown family. Don't kid yourself that this wasn't several....nay, many owners chance to get back at Mike Brown for all the times in the past he voted against the majority on CBAs, rule changes, team moves, etc...

This was payback, pure and simple. If you think a majority of owners would have voted against Lamar Hunt's best interest, or the Rooney's in Pittsburgh you've got your head in the sand.

Holy shit, I have been so busy I didn't realize that happened. All this coin flip nonsense when there is a rule as you said in win %, and they just change it in a way that could only hurt the Bengals. All this and we were up 7-3 against the Bills and looking poised to score again...I know it was early, anything can happen and Buffalo is good, but really felt we win in that electric MNF atmosphere in the Jungle. And playing in Buffalo during the playoffs is a huge disadvantage if we advance to the second round more than anywhere. Regardless, you can't change the fucking rule. Ask Zach Taylor, who said:

""There's several instances this season when the club is fined or people in our building are fined and told to follow the rules, it's black and white, it's in the rulebook," Taylor said. "So now when we point out the rules and you're told, 'We're going to change that,' that seems... I don't want to hear about fair and equitable when that's the case." For Taylor to say something like that, the NFL fucked up. To have the chance in our fate to NOT have to play at Buffalo if both teams win to now making it a certainty we have to play there if Buffalo wins is screwed up.

But end of the day, we had to go on the road every game but one to get to the SB, so we just have to face the likelihood of doing it again. And can't bitch too much, I think back to Week 1 when we lost at home to the Steelers...or getting routed by the Browns and dropping a close one to Baltimore we should have one. Win any one of those and we're not in this position.

It seems like Bengals are upset but all I know they missed 31/2 qtrs of football that the Ravens and the Chiefs played. Let’s call it even …

And the Bills who also missed 3.5 quarters of football but didn’t get the same deal the Bengals got? I notice you didn’t mention them……
