Cincinnati Bengals (Same Ole Bengals)

Keys to victory:

1. Raiders' extremely inopportune penalties led to Bengals' first several scores.
2. Hubbard and Mixon went beast mode.
3. Defense looked really good, particularly on 3rd downs.
4. Apple had a pick and a fumble recovery (didn't see either of them, but it's in the box score. Any good news re Apple we will take).

Mixon looked healthy and was clutch today, hitting holes at full speed. OLine needs to protect Burrow better. He's still taking a lot of hits but seems to be hanging in there. Throwing the ball away to live for another down doesn't seem to compute with him sometimes. Idk, I think he should have had additional short check down options on some plays. There was never enough time for the 2 or 3 WR's to get open long downfield.

Great win for the Bengals today. The 1998 game in Oakland was one of the 3 college/NFL games I have seen in person. I was alone amongst Raiders fans, who were notorious for their treatment of fans of other teams.

They started to get on me in the 1st quarter about my cheering for the visitors, and I was warned if I kept it up I would have beer poured on me. I had heard of much worse fates of visiting Chargers fans... Always good to exact revenge by beating them as the years go by. I think we're 5 of the last 7 against the Raiders now.

I remember chatting with the gentleman next to me about Chuck Woodson. I said he was an amazing addition to their defense and he acted like he had never heard of him before, lol.

Of course the Bengals were terrible then and lost 27-10. Might have been Shula's last year as coach, mercifully.

Forgot to list a HUGE factor in the victory. Epic game by kicker Evan McPherson, who connected on 4 field goals all from 47+ yards, 3 of which were more than 50 yards:

Bengals kicker Evan McPherson makes history vs. Raiders

McPherson tied the NFL record for most 50-yard field goals in a single game. He ended the day with four field goals and three made extra points, not missing a single of his field goals yet missing one extra-point attempt.

The rookie hit kicks from 54, 53, 51, and 47 yards.

The first 54-yard kick came in the first half to even the score at 3. After a Joe Mixon second-quarter rushing touchdown, McPherson helped extend the lead from 10-6 all the way up to 16-6.

“With field goals of 54, 53 and 51 yards, Bengals kicker Evan McPherson now has six of 50+ - two more than previous franchise record-holder Horst Mühlmann had in one season in 1970,” the Enquirer noted on Twitter.

I had the same thoughts, Mixon is firing out there and looks awesome, seems the OL strengthens up as the game goes on in the rush anyways. On the pass pro, I'm less than thrilled, Burrow looked like bait almost the same as last year after it looked like we were improving. Yes, the Raiders have a solid defensive front, but the good teams will and we have to do better. We've got a very tough stretch to end the year, but this is the win we really needed heading into it. Confidence restored after a backslide. The AFC is a shit show and we've got as good of a chance as anyone to make a run imo. Far from a guarantee, but we're at least in position late November, which is more than we can usually say.
