I was about to say the same thing. Pitt firing Wanstadt is in the same league as Minny firing Mason.
And Illinois firing Tim Beckman. Oh wait, that hasn't happened yet (unless he gets out of there first with a promotion).
My projected career trajectory for Beckman goes something like this: 6-7, 8-5, 9-4, 10-3, 7-5, 6-6 fired.
Say what you will about Zook, but he did about the best that anyone is going to do at Illinois. He took them to a Rose Bowl after all, which was only the second they'd been to one in nearly fifty years.
It's the cycle of mediocre teams reaching their ceiling under a good coach, not realizing its their ceiling, hiring a new coach to try to break through that ceiling and starting all over again.
Pitt, Illinois, Minnesota and I'm sure a few others are prime examples.
