Christian McCaffrey (RB Stanford)

Career ending isn't the issue. Anything that prevents you from fully preparing for the draft can cost you big bucks (Jaylon Smith comes to mind).

I genuinely do not understand the position that these kids owe anybody anything. The rules are set up so they essentially have to play college ball to get to the NFL. Coaches are paid millions. The athletic departments rake in millions. The kids get a participation ribbon.

When I am a member of a team I owe it to that team to give all I've got so long as I am a member of that team (as opposed to players who play in bowl games but bail on risky plays to stay safe). The decision on when to leave that team is something different. McCaffrey and Fournette have extenuating circumstances in that they are already nursing injuries. But that is irrelevant to me. They came to school to prepare for their career in the NFL no differently than a prospective lawyer, doctor or engineer. It is what Meyer and Saban sell them on during recruiting. It is how they were persuaded to join their respective teams in the first place. Not to "win one for the gipper" - but to get filthy rich using the extraordinary talent that made them a prime recruiting target in the first place. If I could come up with an analogy for playing in a bowl game versus preparing for the bar exam I would use it. But a top of the class student in a prestigious law program would't risk their mental faculties on the eve of such exams for the good old Harvard Crimson.

I am a college football fan and I hate to see this happening. But the players owe me nadda.
What a player may or may not "owe" a fan is inconsequential. I'm talking about what he owes his teammates.

Wanna get a team together?

As it turns out, based on a a bit of google searching, there doesn't appear to be a professional outlet for tiddleywinkers, although I suppose there could be some underground circuit run out of otherwise abandoned warehouses and prisons where toothless redneck and vaguely Eastern European and Arab tough guys place large bets on the outcomes and there are dire consequences for losing . . . Either way, I'll pass.

His teammates are owed nothing! A players family is owed something much more than any teammate. McCaffrey and Fournette won't be playing with any of these guys next year in the NFL. If its so much about the team, then where's the outrage at players who forgo their senior seasons? They leave the same "teammates" for "selfish" reasons as well...

I'm not drafting him or any player who has a fear of injury in his mind. The greatest players are fearless or feel invincible. Football is brutal any weakness will be exploited.
Spoken like a true fan who could care less about the safety of any player. And this logic is why many players dislike fans, because they see them only as a piece of meat for their entertainment. Of course football is brutal, but to not think players have any fear of injury is downright silly and foolish. These guys have seen guys they know go down to serious injuries on a yearly basis, of course they would like to take few hits by playing 1 less game. Especially if its a meaningless one like the Dollar General or Poinsettia Bowls.

He's about to make money off of their work. You're way off base on this one.

What exactly are they owed? A lot of these players families are leeches and are a big part of the reason so many athletes are broke after the end of their career.

I sure will. Isn't urban the same coach that left his players for positions at other schools? Did he think about Utah when he left for UF? Is UF on his mind when he left for health reasons and didn't return? Please, let urban know

He's also making money off of his work! I can guarantee you that both players are probably some of the hardest working players on their respective teams. And they're teams wouldn't be in headlines without them. I'm perfectly on base. We just disagree.
And the guys are broke over there own stupidity and bad investments. Some of it is due to family and friends, but I bet they put a lot on the line when these kids were never heard of growing up that us fans will never know

Bullshit. Stanford was Stanford before McCaffrey and LSU was LSU before Fournette. If anything they're (particularly Fournette) more of a distraction to their teammates now than anything.

I was actually talking about parents, grandparents and siblings as an example.

Owed what exactly? My family supported me growing up and I've never felt like I owed them anything. I do the same for my kids as my parents did for me. That's how it works in the real world.

family and friends

Oh, friends? You mean like teammates?

I bet they put a lot on the line when these kids were never heard of growing up

Who doesn't for their children? Well, many don't but that's for another topic. I'm not owed anything if my kids grow up to be successful and hit the lottery of life. That's their accomplishment, not mine.

Urbs was hired by Florida on December 7, 2004. He Coached Utah to victory over Pitt in the 2005 Fiesta Bowl. This game, while big for Utah, was not for a BCS Championship. Utah won and capped off an undefeated season.
As for his health, Urban went to the hospital with chest pains after the 2009 SEC Championship game. He announced he would retire after Florida's Sugar Bowl. Said game was not for a BCS Championship. Meyer ended up taking a leave of absence (though he did coach the aforementioned Sugar Bowl) and staying on for 2010. However, on Dec 8, 2010, citing the same health reasons as 2009, announced he would retire from coaching after the 2011 Outback Bowl. This game was not for a BCS Championship either.

Which is to say, none of those bowl games mattered either.

And Meyer actually was suffering health complications.

Try again.
