Chris Holtmann (ex-tOSU Bball coach, HC at DePaul)

That's my precise worry, accepting mediocrity. A winning season and an early a tourney exit being the ceiling is just not ok. I realize most seasons a top-third finish in the conference and a win or two in the Tourney is fine. However, we're not at that level with CH and I don't think it'll get any better over the course of time (as I presume you are also surmising)
It was my fear with the baseball team, but Smith took action and fired the baseball coach. Basketball is a higher profile program than baseball, so if there is action to be taken, I'm confident Smith will take it.

How much did they owe the baseball coach? If they fire Holtmann after this season they'll owe him $17.5 million (five years at $3.5 million).

If they replace him with a guy making $2.5 million per season they'll be spending $6 million for each of the next five years. I'm not sure they're going to want to do that, as opposed to giving Holtmann a season to turn it around. They made their bed, financially.

Yep. Not to mention the black eye Gene would wear from firing right after extending him. I'd love to just move on now, but I'm okay with letting him have a year to finally get over that hump. Especially with the class he has coming in. But, if next year isn't a doozy, I hope he has the apples to move on.

Not for nuthin', but Simple Jim up north was widely maligned for his first six seasons before having a breakout of sorts in year seven. Maybe CH does the same.

Short version: the university has loaned $48 million to the athletic department to cover covid-related deficits from 2021. Wow. If the coaches salaries come out of the athletic department, and I imagine they would, I don't see any coach owed millions getting fired any time soon.

It's a 2.5%, 30 year fixed loan for 48 million to an outfit that just made north of $250MM in revenue this year. I could make the business argument that firing an expensive coach would never be cheaper if you were getting a loan like that to help with a short term cashflow problem.

Man I think in today's climate of high school hoops, in a class of 5, I'd recruit the 4 best defenders I could find and 1 gest scorer. Defense will keep you in every have and everyone wants to score. When the shots aren't falling you have to have options. 1-11 or so in 2023 is not it.
