Chicago Recommendations?

On one hand you see that drug addiction and metal health issues are rampant in our society and you know it needs to be looked at in a responsible, realistic way. Why are so many people, so sick?

OTOH, right now, real physical safety is an issue. We are stressing the belief in the rule of law, which is really the only thing that keeps this shit show together, to the nth degree.

I don't know how you balance those things but I do know people who have the means can typically live/work from wherever they want to so if cities want to be populated by any group other than drug addicts and transients they better figure something out.

Beirut is lovely but current circumstances don't make it an attractive place to live and raise a family if you know what I mean.
I was talking to my aunt the other day about how there's fewer and fewer trick or treaters every year. It's because there's no young families here in the city anymore, they've all moved out to newer developments in the suburbs. The only people still here are older gen x and boomers who are probably going to die here, immigrants and the lower class/criminal/drug addict types. It's serious urban decay, anytime a major box store retailer closes and Dollar Tree or a Dollar general comes up in it's place.

I live just a few blocks from a well known retired NFL QB and once you leave the residential area and go to the mainstreet there's crackheads and homeless people, you have to be careful even pulling into the QT to fill up your tank
Whenever crackheads and homeless people accost me in the streets, I simply offer them a cup of tomato gumbo and they back away like

a while back some street dude hit me up in the Walmart parking lot saying he was just a few dollars short for getting his family a room for the night. I told him I didn't believe him and when he asked why I told him I can't believe he's ever had sex

What are are you looking to do? What kind of restaurants? Shopping? Culture? Do you want to stick to the Loop/Mag Mile/Gold Coast or branch out into some of the neighborhoods?
I am interested in branching out into the neighborhoods outside of the Loop etc. I do plan on doing a few things in that area too but have a clear idea there.

For restaurants, I’d be interested in two things primarily. First, I am interested in less common ethnic restaurants (Swedish, Nigerian, etc.), they don’t have to be specifically those ethnicities, I just put whatever came to mind as examples, and I remember being in Andersonville last time I went so Swedish came to mind, but any types of restaurants of less common ethnicities would be of interest. And second I’d be interested in restaurants that serve local “Chicago staples” or just ate places where locals like to frequent. I am not picky on high end restaurants either. Although I’d definitely like some recommendations on some fine dining establishments, as I know Chicago has an abundance, I enjoy dives with good food just as much, if not more.

And in terms of things to do, I am interested in cultural activities such as art galleries, theatre and things of that nature. For example, bringing up my experience last time, I went to Andersonville to see the Swedish American museum and then saw a skit show by the Neo-Futurists.

TimeOut and Chicago Magazine are the best resource for what's going on. The Christmas market at Daley Plaza (dat's where dey got dee...uhh...Picasso) is an absolute must; it starts on the 17th.

Hyde Park is worth a trip. Aside from walking U of C's campus, there's the Oriental Institute (Indiana Jones was based off their faculty) and Robie House (Frank Lloyd Wright masterpiece that offers tours).

Neighborhood shopping districts. In my opinion, the top three are: Armitage Ave in Lincoln Park, Clark Street in Andersonville and north and south of the Milwaukee/Damen/North intersection in Wicker Park.

Hotel Bars:
Luxury: The Peninsula
Old School Chicago: Coq D'Or at The Drake
Rooftop: London House

Neighborhood restaurants:
French Bistro: Le Bouchon (Bucktown)
Italian Piedmontese: Osteria Langhe (Logan Square)
Italian Tuscan: Trattoria Riccardo (Lincoln Park)
Italian Mobster: La Scarola (River West)
Steak: Boeufhaus (Ukrainian Village)
Moroccan: Shokran (Old Irving Park) this is BYOB
Polish: Staropolska (Avondale)
Ukrainian: Anelya (Avondale)

Chicago Classic Food
Pequod's Pizza (Lincoln Park)
Harold's Fried Chicken (multiple locations)
Jim's Original (UIC) skip the hot dog or burger. You're going to want a Maxwell Street Polish and a Pork Chop Sandwich

Just so there's no confusion, The Oriental Institute is now The Institute For The Study Of Ancient Cultures. Same thing. I linked it in the original post. Also, Hyde Park will be one of the safer locations for Harold's Fried Chicken (there's also locations in The Loop and South Loop). Trust me on this. You're going to order a half dinner (either white, mixed or dark) with hot sauce on it.
