Justin Fields, Chicago Bears 'just did alright' in NFL preseason opener against Kansas City Chiefs

Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields made his 2022 NFL preseason debut Saturday night in Chicago’s 19-14 win over the Kansas City Chiefs. Last year’s first-round pick out of Ohio State played the first three offensive series for the Bears — none of which resulted in points — and Fields told reporters after the game the first-team offense’s performance left a bit to be desired.

“I think it went alright,” Fields said. “I think overall we just did alright out there. I mean, we can get better at a lot of things, pretty much everything. So there’s always room to improve. We’re not perfect at anything; just improving overall.”

Fields finished 4-of-7 passing for 48 yards and was sacked twice. Chicago’s best drive with Fields at the controls was its third, which traveled 50 yards in nine plays and ended with a punt from the Chiefs’ 43-yard line.

“I think we can improve at everything,” Fields said. “Coming up on the ball, executing better. Of course, there were some plays where we didn’t execute as well as we wanted to. So just continually getting better each and every day and keep stacking those days.”

Justin Fields impresses Chicago Bears teammates, NFL media in preseason Week 2

If the biggest jump for a player comes from their first season to their second season, Chicago Bears fans have plenty to look forward to with quarterback Justin Fields. And Fields continued a solid preseason Thursday in Chicago's 27-11 victory over the Seattle Seahawks, perhaps indicating that he's ready to leave a rocky rookie season — little of which was his fault — in the dust.

CHICAGO BEARS COACH MATT EBERFLUS ON HOW THE FIRST DRIVE FIT JUSTIN FIELDS' STRENGTHS IN PLAY ACTION
"When you can run the ball, which we've done a good job on in spots where we can do that, that's what really creates the play-action passes and the movement passes. We do a good job of that. He does a really good job with the movement passes, the play actions, in pocket and out of pocket, and be able to deliver the ball. So we're excited about that."\

EBERFLUS ON THE IMPROVEMENT HE SAW FROM FIELDS THIS WEEK
"It's a small sample size. We're talking about nine plays and a penalty so 10 plays. I thought operation was good, his preparation was great. He handled the offense the way we wanted him to. Had a nice drive and scored the field goal. So I think it's progress. I see more progress in practice sometimes. His footwork is getting better, his delivery when he feels pressure and how he slides in the pocket and delivers the ball, that's getting a lot better too. He's improving every single day."

EBERFLUS ON THE FASTER START
"One of the goals for us coming out of our first performance from last week was to start a little bit better. We wanted to have a faster start as a group and I thought we did that. We came out, Justin had a nice drive, created a field goal there for us and the defense came out in their first two series and had two three-and-outs which was excellent."

Justin Fields named Chicago Bears captain ahead of Year 2 in NFL

"I just think (Fields) is getting better," Eberflus said Aug 28. "Like I said the other day, he's a young player, he needs experience. I think this was game-like experience for him that he needed to have. He took a big step forward for him and for our football team just getting comfortable, operating the offense and doing his thing. I thought he did that tonight."

My God I could choke that O Coordinator. Roll Justin out all game long and give him RPO from the edge not where a pocket would be if they were good.

They don't have much down field either so it's not perfect but protect him
