If not exactly chastened after eight losses, Weis has at least shown a willingness to change. Deferring after winning the coin toss against USC, as small a gesture as that might have been, loosened his grip on his own rigid orthodoxy of offense first.

So it took him 2.5 years to learn to defer...and now that's reason for optimism?

Hell now it will be reported he started whiping his own ass with his other hand, and there will be a collective sight of relief from the ND nation. Thats reason enough for optimism to expect ND to go back to the national championship game next year (according to a domer)

I love these little tid bits. This from an article in the Denver Post more or less trashing Charlie but also talking about how young they are:

I was watching ESPN pre-game for the Rutgers-Army game. They had an ND alum calling in. He relayed a story about how Charlie got his 10-year extension. Apparently, the Saints made a pitch to get him to come down there and coach. He took it in to leverage the Irish into a 10-year extension instead of a five-year. This alum spoke quite disparagingly.

Seriously, no matter how bad the team is, how hard can it be to recruit for Notre Dame? "Hey kid, want to be on national TV every Saturday? More chance for the NFL scouts to see you"

Though that won't last long, soon it will be "Want to help perform a live action re-enactment of the three stooges but with eleven stooges instead? It will be on national tv every saturday."

I'm not usually one to do this, but saying Ntre Ame has 54 to our 57 is not quite apples to apples. The Domers won't admit that they have redshirts so they only count people from the last 2 recruiting classes. I believe your number includes Red Shirts from 3 classes ago. Still its no excuse to be this putrid.

Coach seems eager to blame his players, but the problem is hiding in his mirror

'My greatest attribute professionally is as a teacher,'' he said. ''I've always been able to do a good job of getting my message across.'' $25 million for this?
I'm trying to think of one reason why Weis shouldn't be fired. It has to be something better than this: Notre Dame's power brokers stupidly committed 10 years to him, and still owe him roughly $25 million.
I mean, Notre Dame is 1-9. This is the worst Notre Dame team in history, the first one with nine losses.
And Weis has made every single mistake a first-time college head coach can make.
Charlie Weis is the world's highest-paid intern. And Notre Dame isn't the place for a coach to learn on the job.

I've got the reason for keeping Weis: He has had only three years. Willingham was fired after three years, and that was wrong. He wasn't recruiting well, it seemed, but he should have been given time to build the team his way, and then see what he could do with it.
Weis needs to see what he can do with his players, his creation.
Honestly, though, they aren't close to being ready. Neither is the intern.

Weis talked with the team after their 41-24 loss to Air Force on Saturday about his frustration regarding the lack of progress and asked them who's at fault -- student or teacher?
"The analysis that really has to take place is where in fact is the breakdown? Where in fact is the breakdown?" Weis said. "If I had that answer, we wouldn't have the problem. I think it's a good question. But it's one I honestly don't have the answer to."
Players are as confounded as the coach.
"With his pedigree, we know that he's a great teacher," tight end John Carlson said. "And being that players on this team are students at the University of Notre Dame, you would think that we are all fairly intelligent individuals. So something obviously is not clicking, but I don't know what it is."

So Charlie Weis was asked Sunday: Why should skeptics believe he will turn Notre Dame around?

"They have to believe what they want to believe," the Irish coach said. "When you come into a program, you have to have a plan in place as to how to get it from where you think it is to where you want it to go. It's important to stick to the plan, to not waver. Even with bumps in the road, you make sure you stick to the plan.

Sounds clear - be consistent - fixed goal, fixed method, firm plan.

As far as a time line, Weis in effect asked for another recruiting class to cycle through. He said getting scholarship numbers nearer to the limit of 85 this off-season would give the Irish "more potential, more versatility."

Moreover, Weis continued to insist the losing had engendered change for the better in what he says was a previously dogmatic approach.

"What it really makes you do is do a deeper level of thinking than you've done in the past," Weis said. "I really think it causes you to be ... more open-minded toward different ways of getting it done better."

Couldn't be that the original plan was, you know, flawed - fatally so?
