Charlie Weis (ex-Kansas HC, ex-Fla OC, Notre Dame legend, UnDecided Schematic Advantage)

Bunker Mentaility to Handle Losses / Criticism

How does Charlie handle the criticism that abounds in the press on TV and around the Blogs?

He turns it off.
Notre Dame enters this week on a seven-game losing streak spanning two seasons. If the Irish lose this week, they will tie the record eight-game mark set by Joe Kuharich's squad in 1960.
Weis, who said he doesn't feel added pressure, has dealt with the criticism surrounding his team's struggles by avoiding sports on television and reading newspapers. He only looks at what others put in front of him or what he hears from his wife, Maura, or son, Charlie Jr.
Kind of a bunker mentality?

Kind of a bunker mentality?

In order to survive he's going to have to focus ... block out the distractions.

Chicago Sun-Times Questions Weis' QB Decision Making

(Evan Sharpley their clear choice).
This is uncomfortable territory, drifting into quarterback evaluation mode when all the facts aren't at your disposal.
But who should be the starting quarterback for Notre Dame should be a necessary and vital part of the overall discussion of exactly what Charlie Weis is doing with this team and where he is going with this program.
Here is the thing.
Evan Sharpley is the best game day quarterback on this team and he's not starting.
We can dissect all day whether Sharpley came into the game at just the right time Saturday against Purdue -- after the Weis tirade and when the team was in desperation mode and when some receivers started to step up.
You can blindly or legitimately believe Weis when he tells us that, overall, factoring in practice time, Jimmy Clausen is the better quarterback.
You can take the side that there is more upside to letting Clausen play as opposed to Sharpley when the race is too close to call. Based on that fourth quarter Sharpley had against Purdue, he played better in a crucial situation than Clausen has all year.

Crucial?

When was the last time Notre Dame had a situation even bordering on "Crucial?"

I mean... I guess the games start 0-0...

I watched some of the ND-Purdue game, and Sharley looked better than Clausen has all year.

I think the above is right; promises were made to Jesus Clausen. I also think that Charlie's monstrous ego is also at play--the inability to admit having made a mistake with Clausen and the blind belief that his "decided schematic advantage" is ultimately more important than who takes the snaps.

I tend to feel bad for Sharpley. While CW pads BQ's stats last year, he rides the pine. The kid may have been able to step in right away had he gotten a little PT. And when he does show a little progress this year, he still rides the pine. Of course, I'm no genius...
