Charlie Weis (ex-Kansas HC, ex-Fla OC, Notre Dame legend, UnDecided Schematic Advantage)

I go back to Grad21's point. We're talking about a kid and about a major sports enterprise.

The kid has admitted that he could have handled things better. He is disappointed because he feels that Weis lied to him about his relative standing and opportunities at Notre Dame. Is he justified in that perception, who knows?

From Notre Dame side, the kid stunk up the place in the first game. It appears that his coach, an offensive genius I am told, believes that he would be better suited as a wide receiver. Is this true? Who knows?

What is clear is that Notre Dame is very afraid that other players might follow this kid out of the program, if a fence is not put between them and the exit.

In my opinion, that is good news for Ohio State recruiting and dooms the Notre Dame program to its current status as a bottom feeder.

One can only guess what Rudy thinks about that! :slappy:

Again, this is all in Jones' head that he was "lied to" and decieved. Yeah, he's believable. :roll1:

More importantly, Jones should know that ND needs to release his scholarship for him to play elsewhere. Of course ND will eventually release him so they can use that scholarship for next year. But that scholarship is rather useless right now for them so they can keep it if they want. That being said, Jones should have handled his departure more intelligently and maturely and thereby increase the odds that ND will be nice to him in return.

Jones left 15 minutes before the bus was taking him to the next game. Selfish idiot is certainly appropriate. I'm sure we'd all defend him if a Buckeye player did this. Suuuuure...... :roll1:

I just think it reflects poorly on the University as a whole, "if you want to leave they will hold you hostage" is how it appears to a potential recruit, especially one that's not familiar with how scholarships work. I don't really care who's lying, I just think the school should take the higher ground and let the kid do what he wants. If he thinks he's so good that he can go start at another school more power to him.

He had to know that odds are the pickle would be the next starter, all the hype, the hummer limo and media coverage the kid got, the alumni at ND had to be waiting anxiously for this kid to get his opportunity. As stated though, the kid did get an "opportunity" if you would call it that. That "opportunity" may have been the same chance a mouse gets when tossed into a snakes cage, but it was there.

Personally, I think the original intention of Weis was to toss Jones out for a couple games, let him take the losses then look like a genius when he brought in the pickle, however, being what NoD's offense and defense is this year his plan didn't work out as he thought, but that's purely speculation.

So maybe Weis is lying now to cover up the fact that he was too stupid to realize Jones sucked. I would be embarrassed too.
but you said Weis wasn't lying.

Not the you the President, the you who said you hated you, you who love, hate, Yankees, clouds.....

Let us not forget that this athletic administration at NoD (including Fat Boy) hold their verbal commits hostage as well by NOT allowing them to take visits to other schools after verbally committing.

I'll give them points for being consistent if nothing else.

Why is Weis any more believable? He's the one who has publically counter-dicted himself..

No one here, that I've seen at least, is defending the act of missing the bus. People are saying, hey the kid admitted he screwed up.. why is notre dame stooping this low? To dick the kid and make an example? Or, more likely, to put up a flood gate?

There are really two issues here --
A - How open and truthful was Weis with Jones about his prospects of starting at, or openly competing for, the QB position at ND, and;
B - The treatment ND is according toward Jones now that he left campus and entered NIU.

On Point A - The former is pretty easy to dissect. Weis said one thing, then he said another, not just to Jones but, more importantly, in public settings to the press. There has even been some discussion around which set of statements are more laden with truth. Now whether you put much weight on either set of statements is neither here nor there in my opinion. It is the fact that Weis reversed field and publicly undercut his prior position that is at issue and there can be now doubt that he did so either then or now - or on both occasions if you prefer.

B -- As for ND's treatment of Jones I'll say this once more, and likely for the last time. Even if ND formally released Jones from his scholarship today, NIU cannot deliver a scholarship to Jones until next year - this is because they are at their scholarship limit. This is also the sort of thing that a young man - no matter his emotional distress - should check out for himself.
Given that Jones has high school buddies on the team at NIU I submit that he was in a perfect position to know and understand the scholarship situation for this year. The upshot of which being that he would have to pay his own way regardless of what ND did, or did not do, to release him from their scholarship count. If he did not take this into account then frankly I think that is a failing that falls on him alone, not on Weis or ND.
ND's or Weis' treatment of Jones in this regard is mere window dressing.

This letter was supposedly sent to Charlie:

Mr. Charlie Weis
Head Football Coach
University of Notre Dame
C113 Joyce Center
Notre Dame, IN 46556

Dear Coach Weis,

We've all had days we'd rather forget. Clearly, the season isn't unfolding
the way we all hoped and Saturday was another tough loss. When that
happens, we call it "NACHO DAY."

Hey, it may sound corny, but sometimes when your chips are down, all it
takes is a g esture of support from an unexpected source to help turn things
around. At TACO BELL, we always "THINK OUTSIDE THE BUN", so we'd like to
offer the enclosed "NACHO DAY" award and an order of Nachos to help lift
your spirits.

In fact, we want to lift the spirits of everyone in South Bend. We invite
all fans of the Irish to head into any participating South Bend TACO BELL
location on Sunday, September 23 from 2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. and we'll give
them a free order of regular Nachos.

Please enjoy our offer of free Nachos to help you get through all those
crunchy "NACHO DAYS." Hopefully, things will turn around and you can just
enjoy the food!

- Your friends at Taco Bell

The promotion itself is verified:

Campus, Taco Bell to support Irish
Fast-food chain gives Weis 'Nacho Day' award for team's struggles; official emphasizes promotion is not weight joke

Despite three straight blowout losses to begin the season, coaches putting them through four-hour full-pads practices and ESPN mocking them at every turn, Notre Dame Football players still have support - from two very different sources.

Leaders of The Shirt Project 2007 and student body President Liz Brown are organizing a "green-out" of campus on Thursday, while local Taco Bells will distribute free nachos on Sunday, both in an attempt to galvanize the Irish.
