Charlie Weis (ex-Kansas HC, ex-Fla OC, Notre Dame legend, UnDecided Schematic Advantage)

UPDATE: Controversial billboard blasts Weis

linebacker_billboard_weis.jpg

Coach Weis is trying to make light of the situation; but for the Irish faithful, the message on the billboard is nothing short of blasphemy.
The billboard, which went up earlier this week, is located essentially right above the Linebacker Inn near campus at the intersection of Edison Road and State Road 23. It?s become not only a source of curiosity, but a lightning rod for controversy.
The billboard reads, ?Best wishes to Charlie Weis in the 5th year of his college coaching internship. -- Linebacker Alumni."
So what does Coach Weis have to say about it?
?I?m the head coach at Notre Dame ? I mean, welcome to my world,? he told WSBT News at his pre-game press conference Tuesday.
Weis said Tuesday he had not yet seen the billboard, about 800 metres from his office, but had been told about it. He said it made him chuckle.
"Everything was great until the last word," he said, laughing. "So tell them thanks a lot for wishing me best wishes."

A former player named Tom Reynolds was the one that bought the billboard.

SI.com

Tom Reynolds doesn't remember how much he paid Burkhart Advertising to rent the billboard on the corner of Edison Road and South Bend Avenue. Reynolds, a retired college marketing professor who lettered for the Irish in 1967, claims to represent roughly 50 former Irish football players, mostly from his era and like-minded in their opinion of Weis' 29-21 bottom line after four seasons. "By definition, a good football coach does not lose games when he has superior talent on the field, and at least splits the games where the talent is approximately equal," Reynolds read from an e-mail. "Considering the W-L record of Coach Weis at Notre Dame, one would have to conclude he is serving an internship as a head coach of a college football team, which is defined as 'any formal program to provide practical experience for beginners in an occupation or profession.'"

Yeah, Charlie probably wouldn't be hearing it if 2007 never happened, but it did. Get away with a 50/50 win ratio, and not lose to Navy, and all is forgiven if he does well this year.

The article says that the Backer did not put the billboard up themselves, so my guess is that some alumni that go there after the games or something pitched in. Then again, if you were the owner of the Linebacker, I don't think you'd admit to a controversial billboard that would possibly hurt business.

He joked about the billboard, but I'm sure that thing is getting under his skin. He claims he hadn't seen it yet, but I find that highly unlikely. I'm pretty sure the Linebacker is right there on one of the main roads into campus, and its not far from Charlie's office. It better motivate him to kick some ass, otherwise he'll be out on it by the end of the year

Having been to SB several times, I can say I find it REALLY hard to believe he has never seen it. REALLY REALLY REALLY.

It turns out that the billboard is supported by a retired marketing professor named Thomas Reynolds.

REYNOLDS, THOMAS J.
Professor Emeritus, Marketing. A.B., Univ. of Notre Dame, 1969; M.A., Univ. of Southern California, 1975; Ph.D., Univ. of Southern California, 1976

Reynolds pioneered values research in marketing and has published recently with Notre Dame marketing professors Joel Urbany (PhD Ohio State) and Joan Philips. His means-end chain conceptualization of advertising strategy changed the way that people constructed persuasive advertising. He is a very respected and successful consultant in that domain and it would be very funny if Charlie decided to take him on.

I don't know him well but saw him a few times at conferences. Seemed like a really nice guy. Small world, I had no idea he played for Notre Dame. I like him even more after seeing this billboard.

Ha, thats some good stuff. Funny to see how worked up some of the fans are getting over this if you read the comments. If Weis is the egotistical guy we all know him to be, he'll take the billboard to heart and do his best to prove him wrong. Gonna be hard not to make a good impression with this schedule, but he's blown winnable games before, I'm sure he can do it again.

Screw the line. Nevada is going to put up a shitload of points on the domers. The only issue will be can ND put up more on Nevada. I give Nevada a 40% chance of winning, and if that happens, the implosion in South Bend is going to rattle the Sears Tower.

This could be the best domer season ever...for ME!

Weis: Notre Dame deserves higher ranking

Some may feel that Notre Dame, at 4-1 after three straight heart-stopping finishes, remains a relatively unknown quantity. Are the Irish indeed that good, not just lucky? Or have they eked by against fair-to-middling competition and eventually will see the bottom fall out? Charlie Weis, as you might expect, goes with the former. "If you look at some of the other teams that are playing and look at how their games have gone, tell me where the difference is," the Irish coach said Sunday... I think if you really study the polls, you really have to study which teams that are there and who they played and how they played. If you compare apples to apples, I think that we deserve to be there right with everybody else."

Chicago Tribune

How about you try beating a ranked team for the first time in your life before bitching. Fat jackass. :roll1:

Of course, because you know, beating the team who was the only team to beat the team that you lost to...wait, I'd better consult the 4 pack here...shit, I'm not supposed to talk about the 4 pack...

As of 10/3/2009

Ntre Ame's opponents' cumulative record: 8-10 (4-9 if you take out Michigan...)

As compared with the top 10:

Florida: 6-4
Texas: 8-5
Alabama: 8-7
LSU: 8-8
VaTech: 13-2 (!!!)
Boise State: 5-9 (lol)
USC: 8-9
Cincinnati: 4-7
Ohio St: 11-6 (nice)
TCU: 4-4

Of those, only the teams that are blatantly overrated (Boise and Cincinnati) have schedules comparable to NoD.

In summary, shut up Chuck. You've played exactly one team with a winning record, and they beat you. You are not only a terrible coach, but you completely lack the ability to make rational statements.

Your team is bad and you should feel bad. That is all.
