CFP Title Game, Alabama vs tOSU, Jan 11, 8:15 ET on ESPN, Miami

This. A thousand times this.

I was going to ask before the game last night would you rather be guaranteed a win over Bama last night and a loss to tsun in '21 or the other way around and see what the results were but didn't want to get a bunch of shit started before the NC game.

I would take the guaranteed win in The Game 1 million times out of a million thank you very much.
Should've been a thousand point win in the game and a humiliation of Clemson.

Instead they declined that game, and the compulsion to replace Jim.

Followed by a loss to the greatest coach, dynasty in the history of the sport, and allegedly the best team (still Miami to me).

I don't think it's anything close to those years. OSU was playing really good teams in 06-08 and immediately getting outclassed. It was obvious that nearly every position group needed an upgrade as well as scheme. Last night OSU played Saban's best team and couldn't hang. Yes, they obviously have issues at several positions, but OSU is also addressing that with a number of excellent recruiting classes that are miles better than anything from the Tress era. No comparison.

I've been really hard on him, and while it's probably unfair, it's because of exactly what you said. I'm very confident that if OSU had gotten any consistent pressure he would've been throwing off his back foot every play.

It can't be overstated how big of an advantage it is to have 2 skill players who would've been starting in the NFL this year come back and play as your RB1 and WR1. Beyond talent, they have an understanding and verstility that is not seen at a college level. I can only hope that at some point OSU will inexplicably have a Dobbins and a David Boston come back for one last year together.
No idea how Alabama or Clemson do it but it's pretty common for their programs. Travis Etienne for example last year, Clemson getting all 4 starters back on their DL after 2017 and obviously Alabama this year.

We lucked into it last year with Okudah and Young being required back and then Arnette showing out. It'd be nice for example if a Chris Olave or Josh Myers came back. Yes Olave is at worse a 2nd round guy but this years WR class is ridiculous and getting away from that could be helpful. Then with Josh yeah he's still a top 2 round guy and I'm not sure how it overall helps him. But he's the type of kid that Alabama or Clemson is getting to stick around.

I know Josh said he'd decide today but I think he should wait until required to actually make a decision. Who would want to come back after a year like this if we are being honest. It had to be so difficult for our guys.

I legit wonder if Clemson and Alabama are being as honest with their borderline kids as they should be.

For years now, it seems as though Ohio State's defense has been predicated upon an all-world DL wrecking shop and a group of NFL quality DB's covering their asses when offensive plays are allowed to develop. LB's have seemed something of an afterthought. Well, with half our DL out and the weakest group of DB's that I can remember, you get Tuf Borland on the sideline in open space trying tackle one of the most talented WR's in a generation. Find yourself in that position, and shit will go South real fast.

I did not want to post last night. Too damned close to the wound. Too many times that we have spit the bit when it ccounted most, since 1969. Not a knock on the players, just a fact from following the team for this long. As an example, Woody's loss to a mediocre UCLA in the Rose Bowl was a soul-crusher.

Sure, we can always hope for better.

JF was damaged goods last night and hats off to him for playing the best that he could while injured. It brings to mind the story of William O. Douglas, unlamented late justice of SCOTUS, who fell from his horse while riding and broke many ribs. The pain was so bad that he begged his friend to shoot him then and there. Just an idea of the pain that JF must have been in last night.

Hope that Ryan looks long and hard at the staff and himself, though. Cannot afford to refuse to learn from this, like Don Brown did for several years.

Everyone, be well.

I don't doubt he will. We need to remember Day is in his second year as a head coach. I do think he learned a lot of lessons from last years loss to Clemson, and I think he'll learn from last night as well.

I wouldn't compare last night to that Rose Bowl. The Bucks crushed UCLA earlier that season. That loss was unimaginable.

Alabama was unbeaten and favored by more than a TD. Our defense was undermanned and the coaches had no answers.
