CFP Game BMW Thread: #9 Tennessee at #8 tOSU

Tennessee has some great corners, so I've read. Gotcha, check that box. However, do believe that tOSU has more, and better WRs than the SEC team has DBs. If I may connect the dots, it may not be our #1 and #2 receivers that shine, but our #3 and #4 guys left alone against a S that get the job done. Crossing patterns to take the CBs inside, and fly the slot/wide-outs to match up with the S's, alone on an island. If Will baby can deliver, I like our chances. Oh, yeah, assuming the patchwork OL can keep the QB clean for 4.5 seconds. Go Bucks! RB out of the backfield to the now-open sideline area could be a big-gainer as well. Also believe our D will be our D, and do their dance, keeping Tennessee's scoring down. Go Bucks!

Tennessee definitely has not played a team with the passing capability that we have, question is will we actually use it.

Carson Beck threw for like 350 yards on them.

I think the best plan for this game is to pound the ball inside and prove we're tough. Once we wear them down, we can open up the pass game in the 4th quarter and pull away.

Surely this can’t go wrong.

But I agree Tennessee hasn’t seen anything like our WRs collectively. As stated though will that actually matter? Will we make them the focal point and throw the ball enough to score enough to win? So far we haven’t done that all year so if we did do that then it’d for sure be an anomaly.

One things for sure in that we haven’t played even an A- game so far this year. It’d be so damn fun if we could have a complete game 14+ point win that can get this team moving in the right direction. It absolutely to me feels like we are either going to lose this first game or win the whole thing somehow.

Howard is the limiting factor and that’s not a slam on him. Ebuka and Jeremiah and Tate are better receivers than Howard is a QB. Cut it loose. Especially on first down instead of 2nd and 8…18 yd pass first and ten.
Howard is elite within like 30 yards so the 2nd and 8 situations we always run into isn’t on him. We can all debate whether Will is good enough to connect deep but imo we just don’t call enough early down passes. Which is a shame because Will is pretty dang good on the shorter throws under 30 yards. Will just has to avoid the turnovers though if we really want to have a shot.

As I understand it from the X&O types, he isn't elite enough inside of 30 yards to complete that 7 yard out/hook whatever you want to call it pass which is pretty much a staple of Day's attack. Thus the pick near 6 vs tsun.

This of course isn't a knock on Howard but it does beg the question of what kind of Wiley E Coyote Super offensive Genius brings in a transfer QB that can't run his offense but whatever, here we are. Just a top 5 defense that can defend both the pass and run at an elite level in front of us. I'm sure the Acme gameplan has come in the mail and we are going to finally pull one of these out.

He’s an expert at a 3yd crossing route on 3rd and 6. Nobody run a route less than 10 yds. Hartline needs more input.

Well that throw plus the Penn State throw were just poor decisions. It wouldn’t have mattered if it was CJ with how bad of a decision those two throws were.

He’s made those throws more often than not. The issue is many teams started running zone and were sitting on those short throws. That’s why he had more INTs down the stretch.

The one game with decent weather down the stretch (NW) Will did a very good job with vertical throws. Then we go back home to Ohio Stadium with bad weather for two weeks and I think the coaches because of that stopped taking shots. Well if they’re sitting on the underneath stuff and the run game and we aren’t willing to throw the ball deep? That ain’t a good recipe.

That is the net result no matter if you think the issue is just a lack of calling deeper passes or if you think they don't call them because of the talent.

I have been saying since about week 3 that Howards inability to throw past 55yds will not allow the team to win in the playoffs. Like you said, once teams realized they didn't have to keep safeties very deep, the field shrank, and its been a struggle ever since. It really is unfortunate to easily have the best WR group in the country be limited like this, but it is what it is.

I still think Howard gives us the best chance to win. There is no way Sayin is ready. I also don't know WTF happened to Howards legs, it's a mystery to me. Oh and I also would be throwing to the Backs more.
