CFP Game BMW Thread: #9 Tennessee at #8 tOSU

And as if the fuckery that always seems to happen to us in the ESPN Invitational is suddenly going to go away. We will never be the on the positive side of those situations. They won't let that happen.

The fuckery doesn't lose us those games if we handle business and put the ball in the end zone instead of the offense sputtering (and yes the defense letting down in the end as well)

Agreed. If we win the Natty it will be because Day sees the light and the players perform out of their minds. There will be no favors given by the powers that be with CFP. Those are reserved for the SEC and ACC (ESPN properties).

Fuckin ACC refs for this one too. It's gonna be a shit show.
Besides the crew that worked State College for the Buckeyes this year, what (if anything ) competence has any other crew shown this year?
I’m not being flippant. I just find that collegiate officiating is shit and it appears that the lowest common denominators are who get the time on the field.

The 4th quarter vs UGA was Punt FG then the missed FG on the 3 offensive possessions. Get a TD instead of that FG and it's 42-24 instead of 38-24 and a completely different game at that point..

You have to score TDs in these games, settling for a bunch of short FGs is how you lose.
That point feeds their argument because the FG (instead of TD) was kicked right after MHJ got targeted and the replay guys in Birmingham told the officials to pick up the flags. If they had correctly upheld targeting, the Bucks would have first down very close to the end zone. And without the attempted murder on him, I think MHJ had a real chance to make that catch for a TD.

IIRC that ball was being thrown out of the back of the end zone. It was Marv doing Marv things that made it look like he even had a chance.

Honestly there was too much optimism in here so I just wanted to find something else to bitch about.

As I recall, Marv was falling out of the back of the end zone and the ball was coming down right to his numbers. Which is why the UGA defender went for the kill shot - he won't catch it if he's unconscious. The only question would have been whether his backside hit out of bounds before the catch.

I admit it's a somewhat vague memory. Haven't seen it since it happened and don't want to; too upsetting. :yow2:

After the Clemson shitshow in 2019, it’s incredible they went ACC refs here. The ACC and SEC are absolutely brother/sister conferences….Big 12 would’ve been a better crew on paper….

Sucks this type of stuff even has to be considered. But I absolutely crushed OOC games across NCAA football this year based on officiating crews.

Until they fix this ridiculous rule, take the officials on the road from your conference, against the home team in an OOC game. There’s so much pressure on each conference to over perform in OOC matchups so you know the refs are looking to please their overlords.

This shouldn’t be controversial…..EVERY OOC should be reffed by a neutral crew, not just in bowl games.

Have we ever had a targeting review go our way? Seems like it always results in targeting on us or taking targeting on the opponent away.
If you're asking seriously, I will answer seriously: Yes, Ohio State has had targeting called correctly against the opponents. At least once (at Penn State in.... 2018, I want to say). And didn't Clemson get some bloke ejected for a targeting hit against Fields? That one was more of what used to be called "Spearing", as he lowered his head against Fields and did not hit Fields in the head or neck area.
But, in case you're asking rhetorically, then I agree - targeting seems to be an equalizer. Ohio State is dominating Notre Dame in 2016? Let's take Bosa out of the game and see how they do. Ohio State with a big hit on Maryland? Let's take Burke Ward out of the game. Ohio State is gaining momentum against Iowa, let's take Bosa out. I'm joking about it being a conspiracy, really, but it sure seems that way, sometimes.

Edit: Oof - that's embarrassing. It was Denzel Ward against Maryland (hurt my feelings!).

Tennessee has some great corners, so I've read. Gotcha, check that box. However, do believe that tOSU has more, and better WRs than the SEC team has DBs. If I may connect the dots, it may not be our #1 and #2 receivers that shine, but our #3 and #4 guys left alone against a S that get the job done. Crossing patterns to take the CBs inside, and fly the slot/wide-outs to match up with the S's, alone on an island. If Will baby can deliver, I like our chances. Oh, yeah, assuming the patchwork OL can keep the QB clean for 4.5 seconds. Go Bucks! RB out of the backfield to the now-open sideline area could be a big-gainer as well. Also believe our D will be our D, and do their dance, keeping Tennessee's scoring down. Go Bucks!
