Cbf40's look at '11 recruiting

Duron most likely isn't coming back. Move on.

I'm aware that it isn't very likely, but 'in my IMO' he would fulfill an immediate need and I personally hold out a little hope... But I must be sorely mistaken...

It's nice to be set straight by someone as highly regarded as you...

Thank you and pardon my ignorance...

Free Rivals - Midwest region top storylines

2. Buckeye State dominance

Last year, five of the top six prospects in the Rivals.com Ohio state rankings went to programs other than Ohio State for different reasons. Some the Buckeyes didn't really pursue (Spencer Ware, Braylon Heard), others they couldn't decide on (Latwan Anderson) and on some they just got beat (Jordan Hicks, the late Matt James). No matter how you spin it, 2010 wasn't a good year in state for the Buckeyes. However, 2011 was the opposite story. Braxton Miller, Doran Grant and Michael Bennett lead a very strong group of natives in the 2011 Ohio State class. Few schools took players that the Buckeyes coveted this time around.

5. Glenville drama

There are five prominent prospects from Cleveland (Ohio) Glenville still undecided heading into signing day, led by the nation's No. 1 offensive guard, Aundrey Walker. Walker is joined by defensive end Andre Sturdivant, quarterback Cardale Jones, linebacker Frank Clark and wide receiver Shane Wynn. Walker is set to choose among USC, Ohio State and Michigan State, while Clark is thought to be a lock for Michigan. The others have to decide whether they want to play right away at Toledo or choose a different route. For Sturdivant and Wynn, it could be Indiana and for Jones it could be a delayed enrollment at Ohio State. Either way, many will be watching, especially watching Walker, to see what happens.

6. Who's No. 3

Ohio State is clearly No. 1 in the Big Ten and Nebraska is the new kid on the block checking in at No. 2. However, who will finish third behind the two powers? Iowa, Michigan and Michigan State are all battling for that spot, as well as for a slot in the national top 25. Each is hoping to close strong on signing day. There are many players expected to announce on signing day that will impact this such as defensive tackle Darian Cooper, offensive lineman Jacob Fisher, linebacker Leilon Willingham, linebacker Frank Clark, Marquise Wright and others that will impact this race.

5. Five-star Decisions

Linebacker Curtis Grant, offensive tackle Cyrus Kouandjio and linebacker Stephone Anthony are all uncommitted five stars from the Mid-Atlantic area making their decisions on Signing Day and have plenty of fans in suspense. Grant is expected to choose between Ohio State and North Carolina, Kouandjio is choosing between Alabama, Auburn, New Mexico and Iowa and Anthony is apparently down to Clemson and Virginia Tech. These three decisions will be the main focus of the region and one of them could pull a surprise, we just don't know which one yet.

6. Delvon, Darius and Dominique

The decisions of defensive tackle Delvon Simmons (Oregon, USC, Rutgers), athlete Darius Jennings (Ohio State, Virginia, Wake Forest) and Dominique Terrell (Virginia, West Virginia, Miami) aren't as sexy as the five stars but they aren't far behind. Will Simmons stay close to home and play at Rutgers after a late recent visit by Greg Schiano? Will Jennings stick close and play for Mike London at Virginia and will he be joined by Terrell or will one or even all of them pull a surprise?

I wonder if with the committment of Jones on top of already having Miller on campus, that we still go after Dillon from CA? We might have a logjam at QB in a few years

Free Rivals - Signing Day Blitz: Ranking the Big Ten

1. Ohio State

Headliner: Five-star linebacker Curtis Grant is the No. 2 player in the country, and while he was rumored to be an Ohio State lean for awhile, he still made his decision suspenseful at the end.
Sleeper: While Grant will obviously get all of the attention at linebacker, three-star Ejuan Price of Pittsburgh (Pa.) Woodland Hills has excellent instincts, is all over the field and reads and reacts very well. He is also a very physical player.
Overview: The signing day addition of Grant obviously put this class over the top, but even without Grant it still would have been at the top of the Big Ten. The Buckeyes signed the top three highest ranked players in the conference and finished with four players in the Rivals100. As part of a very strong in-state class, everyone will be keeping an eye on four-star quarterback Braxton Miller, who enrolled early and may be in line for playing time this fall because of Terrelle Pryor's suspension.

Then why do they have him rated as a 5.5 three star. They have him as the second lowest OSU player, only in front of the LS Haynes. Way too low based on his film.

As Coach Fickell mentioned, it might have had something to do with this being the first year he really played on the ball...before that he has mainly been a stand-up DE.

Signing Day Notes

Written by Duane Long | 03 February 2011

Signing day has come and gone. It was a more exciting signing day than we are used to because the Buckeyes were in the hunt on signing day rather than having the class sewed up.The excitement was about Aundray Walker, Darius Jennings and Curtis Grant, all players who were not going to decide until signing day.

Going in I only had hopes for Grant. I never felt right about Walker. Many were talking about how the Glenville kids do this every year. Talk about some other school then pick Ohio State right before or right on signing day. Marcus Hall did it, saying he was leaning toward Miami. Last year there was a great deal of chatter that Christian Bryant had taken a last minute visit to North Carolina and committed. He ended up at Ohio State. I never saw the Ohio State love from Walker. That was the difference. He was never down here like the others. He only came down when he was supposed to come down. He never talked about Ohio State like the others. In the end I had mixed feelings about him. He became a need as far as I'm concerned. He was never a player I wanted. I am very concerned about numbers. We go into the first five games next year looking at six veteran scholarship offensive linemen. Even with Mike Adams back we are looking at seven ready to play offensive linemen. Even those who disagree with me about Antonio Underwood, Tommy Brown and Chris Carter acknowledge they are projects. They are not going to be ready to play next year. Getting through next year without injury to an offensive line starter is a most crucial element to being a contender. If we do that the scholarship we save from Walker going to USC becomes a plus. We can offer a better prospect.

I did not know what Darius Jennings was going to do. It would have been great to have him. He flew under the radar but he would have been a great addition. I think it came down to the fact that he wanted to play offense and while he would have been able to choose where he played if he picked Ohio State, he knew in the back of his mind that the Buckeyes wanted him as a defensive back.

You know my feelings on Cardale Jones. I love getting him. I think he has a tremendous upside. I think it is smart for him to go to a prep school. Get his academic house in order, get his study habits down in a very structured environment before the complication of big time football is added to the equation. It puts some space between he and Braxton Miller. It is a win-win situation for Jones and the Buckeyes.

Curtis Grant is the icing on the cake to a great class. I don't care about the rankings. This is a well rounded class. the Buckeyes filled needs and brought in elite talent everywhere, yes, on the offensive line too as Bobek is an elite center prospect. The linebacker class could be put up against any on the country and that was before this unique talent decided to be a Buckeye. Grant is one of the three most gifted linebackers to come into the program since I have been evaluating talent in Ohio. Etienne Sabino and Andy Katzenmoyer being the others. He is big enough to play as a freshman and I expect him to. He may start. If not from game one I think he could at some point in the season.

Great class. On to 2012. This is going to be fun, Buckeye Nation.
