CBF40'S Look at '09 recruiting

wadc45;1096520; said:
Here's my EARLY EARLY EARLY dream class (while still trying to be somewhat realistic):

QB - Morgan Newton (although I am intrigued by Willoughby's Pat Nicely)
RB - would like to see a combination of a speed back (a Jordan Hall or Fitzgerald Toussaint) and a power back (a Carlos Hyde or Larry Caper)
FB - Adam Homan
WR - Perez Ashford (would gladly take Marlon Brown, Dion Sims or Kraig Appleton but I think those are all longshots)
WR - Chris Fields
TE - agree it's too early to tell...but look out for Brian Wozniak out of Loveland...I also like Ed Hazelett out of Warren Central
OL - Marcus Hall
OL - Jack Mewhort
OL - Chris Watt
DE - Melvin Fellows
DE - Cornelius Carradine
DE/LB - Jonathan Newsome
DT - John Simon
DT - Corey Adams
LB - Storm Klein
LB - Jordan Whiting
LB - Dorian Bell (if that doesn't work out I would have no problem adding a kid like Chris Snook)
CB - CJ Barnett
CB - EJ Banks
S - Justin Turner
S - Denicos Allen
ATH - Jamie Wood
ATH - Craig Crawford

I realize how many kids I am leaving off this list...Fritz Rock, Bryce Brown, Petey Smith, Darrell Givens, Darrell Mason, Patrick White, Chris Freeman, Corey Linsley, Michael Edwards, Will Studlien, Ricky Harris, Nate Klatt, Dale Peterman, Pat Muldoon, Mike Marrow, Dan Fox, DJ Hunter, Devontae Payne, Bud Golden, Justin Kollie, Jeff Walker, Kyle Koehne, Adam Bellamy, Nate Cadogan, Trae Tiller, Tyler Scott, Julius Ferrell, Willie Ferrell, etc. And of course there are probably a handful of recruits that will end up in the '09 class that we haven't even heard of yet...

Now that sleepy time is over this would be a more realistic start to this class, in my eyes (this is far from a finished class...just a starting outline):

QB - not sure...too early to tell
RB - Carlos Hyde
RB - Fitzgerald Toussaint/Jordan Hall/Jaamal Berry
FB - Adam Homan
WR - Chris Fields
WR - James Green
TE - still too early
OL - Chris Watt
OL - Marcus Hall
OL - Corey Linsley
OL - Jack Mewhort
DE - Tank Carradine
DE - Jonathan Newsome
DT - John Simon
DT - Adam Bellamy
LB - Jordan Whiting
LB - Storm Klein
LB - Quan Fletcher
CB - C.J. Barnett
CB - D.J. Hunter
S - Jamie Wood
S - Brandon McGee

That's 20 so far, with a couple being longshots (McGee has offers from everyone...Fletcher/Bellamy/Carradine/2nd RB need offers before they can commit)...and leaves a lot of guys with offers off the list:

Duron Carter - Michigan?
Xavier Nixon - who knows
Eric Shrive - ND?
James Jackson - no idea...maybe stays in-state?
Corey Adams - USC or UCLA? no idea really
Melvin Fellows - I'll be the one to say I think he sticks with his Illinois commitment
Craig Drummond - Illinois
Jelani Jenkins - PSU? VT? who knows
Dorian Bell - FSU? UM?
Justin Turner - again, I'll be the one to say he heads North
EJ Banks - maybe the most likely, along with Jackson, to be a Buckeye
Darrell Givens - Miami? Illinois? PSU? Maryland?
Dre Kirkpatrick - Alabama? Florida? USC?

Yup we are both on the same page here...You could just as easily put us as the maybe the chalk for 4 or 5 of those guys on the list or second and we have some ins with most of the guys...

Really like the way this class looks at the early stages...Going to be a full class and lots of top 250 talent all over the board...

BTW why no Pitt on your list for Bell or just an oversight?

I say that Fellows, Carradine, Golden, and Turner are going to be the toughest guys to pull instate...But I never bet against Tress instate...

Don't know where he is headed and if it isn't OSU don't care...this list was whipped together in about 10 minutes.

Well I just thought that they would be the toughest competition due to Hale and Saddler going there last year...

Need to put more time into your work...I know you have a ton of time on your hands...:tongue2:

Very similar to WADC's list, as in I have NO idea on QBs or TEs with the information out there right now. Fellows I can see sticking with Illinois, but we also have Carradine and Newsome at DE, which is fine, especially with the '08 DE haul of Wells, Williams and possibly Mobley. I like what I have heard about Ricky Harris, moreso than Adam Bellamy, so I have him in there and I would really like to see Turner in '09 too. Anyways:

QB: ?
RB: Carlos Hyde
RB: Jaamal Berry
FB: Adam Homan
WR: Chris Fields
WR: James Green
WR: Duron Carter
TE: ?
TE: ?
OL: Jack Mewhort
OL: Chris Watt
OL: Corey Linsley
OL: Marcus Hall
DE: Cornelius Carradine
DE: Jonathan Newsome
DT: John Simon
DT: Ricky Harris
LB: Jordan Whiting
LB: Storm Klein
LB: Quan Fletcher
CB: C.J. Barnett
CB: D.J. Hunter
S: Jamie Wood
S: Justin Turner
ATH: Brandon McGee

... that's 25 ...

Many have questions whether Harris is maxed out growing...Not a great frame for size development...Not saying it won't happen because it very well could...

As for Bellamy he is a bad dude and has a 6'4 270 lb frame...

For a DT at 6'3" 320 its fine if he is maxed out size wise, imo. I am sure once he gets into a S&C program they will convert most of the weight to solid/leaner muscle. Can't be too hard with Lichter, Reynolds and the facilities we have at our disposal.

You are probably right...I was thinking that maybe he was more 6'1''...Could also be a guy they may want to see the ability to shape up kinda like Rowell...Just not really the type of DT we really go after...

Man this recruiting season has my head spinning...Not in a bad way tho, it is just hard to keep track with all these good prospects popping up and getting offers...

Just want to throw some thoughts down, maybe for you guys to comment, but also just to try and get a grasp of what is going on as things are moving very fast, and I really believe that if some don't jump on board by the spring game they will be left off...

- I think we will see a beginning of a QB search now...Pryor is not a redshirt type player, and then say he might only be here three years, so the next guy could start as a redshirt sophomore...

- RB my list look like:
1. Carlos Hyde
2. Jamaal Berry
3. Jordan Hall
4. Bud Golden

- The top 3 have offers, and honestly all could say they want to jump on board. I think we take Hyde with one of the second two, and Golden is on the outside looking in...Don't see us taking 3.

- WR my list looks like:
1. Chris Fields
2. James Green
3. James Jackson
4. Duron Carter

- I think that we are in solid shape for the last 3...All have offers, I think we will only take 3 tho, maybe only two depending on what happens at other positions and if we get some DB prospects that could also play WR.

- We finally have a little talk about TE...Reid Fragel and Dion Sims look to be the two guys getting talk right now...Curious to see if when they get offered...

- OL my list looks like:
1. Jack Mewhort
2. Marcus Hall
3. Chris Watt
4. Corey Linsey
5. Eric Shrive/Xavier Nixon

- Right now I would put us the chalk to land the top 4 for sure...Then if either of the last two want to come you find room for them.

- DE my list looks like:
1. Melvin Fellows
2. Jonathon Newsome
3. Tank Carradine

- Fellows recruitment should be over by spring time, Newsome is just a matter of time, and I think Carradine gets offered after he gets a test score. I would also take 3 if it were these 3 or some other stud.

- DT my list looks like:
1. John Simon
2. Corey Adams
3. Adam Bellamy/Ricky Harris

- We have one of the best DT in the country and it would be great if we could pull in Adams as well, but I think one of the other two on the list could very easily get offers at camp.

- LB my list looks like:
1. Jordan Whiting
2. Storm Klein
3. Dorian Bell
4. Quan Fletcher

- The first two are in the bag and would make a great class, but we are looking real good for Bell, probably not going to make a decision until the AA game, and all Fletcher needs is an offer and I think that he will get that down the road, if the staff wants to take 4 LBs...

- Here is where it gets very very tricky, the DB list:
1. CJ Barnett
2. Jamie Wood
3. Brandon McGee
4. JT Turner
5. Darell Givens
6. DJ Hunter
7. EJ Banks
8. Vladimir Emilien
9. Corey Brown

- I don't think with the crop of talent on this list that 6 is out of the question. You could also still add guys to this list like Victor Marc and Ricardo Dixon, that could get some interest. But I think Brown is close to getting an offer, so that leaves 9 with offers to fill 6 spots...We have 2 already filled with Barnett and Wood. I truly believe that we will land McGee, some might call me crazy, but I would hold out until he says he is going somewhere else...Turner, Emilien, and Givens are probably the least likely on the list right now IMO...But either Turner or Emilien are guys that fill that safety role of guys that will come up and play very well against the run, that we have been missing the past couple years...You would have to think with Hunter being from Middletown that he is a shoe in once offered, and if Brown gets offered you would have to feel good about our chances there, especially with Bell putting us high up on his list, and they have said they would like to attend the same school...Then there is Banks, we were thought to be the early leader, and I haven't seen anything that would change my mind...

So for a breakdown here is how I see it...
QB - 1
RB - 2
FB - 1 (Homan)
TE - 2
WR - 3
OL - 4
DE - 2/3 (depends on Fellows and Carradine's test score)
DT - 2/3 (depends on who and how many they might want)
LB - 3/4 (depends on who and how many they might want)
DB - 6

Adding the numbers that puts us at 26-29 and you know that Tress won't do that, and either way we don't have that many schollies to give...I would say 23 would be the magic number and if the right ones want to come we would go with 25...Just not sure where to cut the numbers right now...

One might say WR, but they have offers out to 4 guys, and we are right there for all of them...

Maybe only take 3 oline, but once again we have offers out to 3 guys that we are the chalk to land...

Maybe LB but Fletcher is a very good player and if we get Bell do they say that is it and not go after Fletcher?

DB - maybe cut down to 5, but as I showed above we are going to be cutting out some very good players if we only go with 5...

Maybe only one TE, but with Nicol and Smith graduating, we are only going to have Ballard and DiLillo, so we might need two to add depth...

Either way it is only April and we will know a little more after the spring game as some guys come and we can gauge their level of interest...

What do you do if Hyde, Hall, and Berry all want in?

I don't think I could say no to Berry...

Berry needs an offer first. And Hall could end up at CB. If all three have offers and all three want in I think you take them all and sort them out later.

The scholarship breakdown magic number is only 21. If you bank on Beanie going early, that's 22. Are you speculating on transfers or just the natural attrition rate? Either way, 25 seems like a stretch. Plus, doesn't Tress usually try to save one or two schollies for upper class walk-ons?
