When Carpenter was injured on the first play of the Michigan game in 2005, Wilson was the one that replaced him as a true freshman. While he didn't play much in the Michigan game that year, he did get quite a few snaps in the bowl game against Notre Dame (from what I recall) after he had a few weeks to prepare with the first team D.

That is the way I recall it as well. Laurinaitis got the majority of Carpenter's snaps vs. UM but I think Wilson got a bigger portion of them in the bowl game as we played a lot of nickle and/or 5 man fronts with only 2 LBs.

I never knew Laurinaitis put his hand in the dirt and played rush end.

But since you like to be so picky, Wilson stepped in to Carpenter's role as a pass rusher, while Laurinaitis stepped into his role as a linebacker.

But back to the point, Wilson was definitely the 5th down lineman by the end of his freshman year as evidenced by his play time against Notre Dame after Carpenter went down.

If my memory serves me correctly, Gholston was always ahead of Wilson. He came in and played as a true freshman, which surprised a lot of people. His second year, he missed the entire year due to injury (and Wilson was the 5th and got PT after Carpenter's injury in his true frosh year). When Gholston came back from injury as a redshirt sophomore, he surprised many people by beating out Wilson (then a true sophomore) in camp. He put together a great season and never looked back.

Well, there's one more spot opening they saw coming, Henton :( Would still like to see them pursue Newton (though they don't really have room), but perhaps he's not interested in waiting behind TP.

Only two QBs in '09 is a scary thought, as is only two QB's with an ounce of experience in '10.

But how do you attract a quality QB with Pryor in the fold? Who on our list of candidate recruits is worth passing on to pick up someone who only fits into our plans in the case of an injury?

And for emergencies we still have folks like Orhian Johnson who may fall into a horrible catch 22. Getting reps at the most coveted position on the field - and having everyone hoping you never see a snap.

Boeckman, Bauserman, Pryor for three in '09. Just a typo since you have the '10 number correct.

It's looking like QB just became a major priority in the '10 class, and it should be pretty easy picking up a stud considering the lack of depth and the fact that the chances of Pryor staying four years wouldn't seem to be that great.

I know Boeckman seems like he will be forever, but he is a senior. For '09 we will only have Pryor & Bauserman.

Does this open the door for Nicely this year?

good call everyone, I'm getting my recruiting classes and the seasons mixed up, this years class is the '09 class, this years season is the '08 season

still, I think we skip on a QB this year and go after (and probably land) some big fish next year due to the reasons I said above (lack of depth, chances that Pryor leaves early)

The negative is that we will have only two QBs in '09, only one of whom will be on scholarship. The positive is that these two promising young QBs will get a LOT of reps and more individual attention. Plus you have the walk-on kid who will provide some emergency backup. I think we'll be ok with 2 QBs for '09.

Bauserman might not be on scholarship, but if he wouldnt have pursued minor league baseball he would be. So I dont necessarily consider him the average run of the mill walk on .
