Some big shoes to fill wearing #7. Do the previous owners proud Jermaine!

I always wore #7, easily my favorite out there. Started when I idolized Joe Germaine and Joey Galloway as a kid, then all the way through Gamble, Ginn, just had a very good one in Hancock...list goes on. Mathews has always been one of my favorites since his recruitment, so this is pretty cool. Add to the #7 legacy my guy.

Jermaine Mathews Jr. Working to Make "BIA" Moniker Ring True Again for Ohio State's Cornerbacks in 2025

All that feels different about being a starter for Jermaine Mathews Jr. is the depth-chart designation.

The junior made big contributions in big spots as both a freshman and a sophomore, even if he was backing up Ohio State’s starting outside cornerback tandem of the past two years, Denzel Burke and Davison Igbinosun.

“It just means I'm going to be out there a little bit more,” Mathews said in April. “It really doesn't change too much. Just make the plays when they come to me and just try to get better.”

Ohio State’s cornerback room lived up to its “Best in America” moniker in 2023 and 2024, helping the Buckeyes' pass defense finish as a top-three passing defense both years. Burke and nickel Jordan Hancock depart as starting corners from both those teams, but Mathews' goal is to step from supporting actor to main cast at cornerback and work with Igbinosun to ensure the label rings true again in 2025.

“I think we're the most talented cornerback room in the country,” Mathews said. “I thought we were last year as well. So I think nothing changed. We're BIA for a reason. So I think whoever's in the room, we’ve just got to keep up that standard.”

Jermaine Mathews Jr. is embracing his role as a starter and leader for Ohio State this season

The cornerback’s role will expand in his junior season after totaling the most snaps of any non-starter on defense last season.

Since 2015, Ohio State has seen 11 cornerbacks selected in the NFL Draft. The last two of those corners to be selected were Jordan Hancock and

Denzel Burke, who both were drafted in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft in April.
One Buckeye who will be looking to step into the spot vacated by Burke in the secondary is Jermaine Mathews Jr., who is entering his third season in Columbus. The cornerback from Winton Woods in the Cincinnati area has seen his role on defense increase in each of his first two seasons in the scarlet and gray.

As a true freshman, Mathews didn’t take long to make an impact. Not only did Mathews record his first interception of his college career in the non-conference game against Western Kentucky in 2023, he returned it 58 yards for a touchdown in the blowout win over the Hilltoppers. In his first collegiate season, Mathews recorded 13 tackles and defended four passes.

Even though Mathews didn’t record an interception last season as a sophomore, he was still a contributing member of Ohio State’s secondary. Along with recording 22 tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss, Mathews notched the first sack of his career in the win over Iowa. Later in the season against Northwestern, Mathews set a career-high with four tackles. There were three other games in 2024 where Mathews finished with three tackles.
