Smith?s teammate, senior Gareon Conley, certainly isn?t lacking for natural ability. The wideout-cornerback is headed to Ohio State for football and he was a stalwart in the shorter dashes for Massillon this track season.
However, the fact Conley will join Smith at Ohio State University for this week?s State Track and Field Championships, running the 400-meter dash to boot, does qualify as a bit of a shock.
?To be honest, I knew he could run the 400 because we do it as part of our practices, but the way we discovered he was a 400 runner was a completely by accident,? Scott said of Conley, who finished third in the regional finals last week at Fitch in 50.04. ?We had someone who couldn?t run and Gareon volunteered for the 400. It was a sprint medley we were competing in at New Philadelphia and Gareon wanted to run the 400. When I timed him I was blown away.
?He broke 50 in the prelims last week and that was his fourth time running the event. He?s come really quickly and breaking 50 that quickly was sort of a surprise ... he basically learned the race within a month.?
Scott said he clocked Conley at 51.5 for that first quarter-mile in New Philadelphia. Conley has continued to impress, as he broke 50 seconds in the regional semifinals last week, running a 49.98.
Scott chalked up Conley?s slower finals time to still being a 400 neophyte. The race that is often described as track?s toughest punishes those who can?t find the proper pace.
?We were trying to determine how he should attack the first curve,? Scott said. ?Should he come out strong or should try to pace himself and turn it on later? We kind of pushed him into turning it up a little on Friday and he kind of ran out of gas at the end.
?We made an adjustment for Friday?s final and it didn?t work so well. We learned from that and we?re going to start applying the prelim technique (from last week) for the state meet.?
