CB Eli Apple (All B1G, National Champion, Los Angeles Chargers)

One play really made me think Apple is coming of age in this game. Gordon got outside and don't know if apple got off his block clean but he was in the open field one on one with Gordon. Probably giving up 30 lbs, he stuck him right there in space on probably the best tackle I've seen all year. Wish I had a GIF of it. I think I just said wow after watching it.
I noticed him quite a few times - he was really fired up. Not sure of the play you're thinking of, but the one that sticks out to me was when Gordon was bottled up running to the right, reversed field (I was like - crap, here he goes) and Apple came out of no where like a heat seeking missile with a perfect inside out tackle. When I saw it happen, I actually wondered what must be going through Gordon's head - those are the runs that have worked all year for him. He looked bewildered at the speed when he got up. Eli's gonna be a great one.

I'd have to re-watch to tell you where it was but it was a play where Gordon bounced it to the left. I was just shocked because it reminded me of silver bullet tackling (15-20 years ago) where the DBs were up making open field tackles around the LOS.

Gordon nearly fumbled the ball on that hit too.

Apple and Bell's improvement have stood out to me big time. Apple in particular has really elevated his game...incredibly physical in the run game and does not miss tackles...also sticks in the hip pocket of receivers and has improved on playing the ball in air. Basically the exact opposite of what we saw in our defense last year. The improvement of Bell and Apple, along with Grant's incredible play this year, have helped transform our back 7 into a defense that is very, very good if they play to their potential.

Now Eli will certainly get a big challenge next game...you know Grant will have Cooper and that will be a huge challenge. But Bama has some other guys that can make you pay if Cooper gets doubled. Eli is going to have to lock down the other side with White and Jones. And as for that job, I have the utmost confidence in Eli to get the job done. He was one of my favorite recruits in the 2013 class and it is fun to see him growing into his potential.

Would you consider putting doran on their second best receiver with no help all game and eli on cooper with help over top the entire game? And by all game I don't literally mean 100%, but majority of snaps.
