Saturday?s spring game is expected to be part of the big recruiting visit weekend of the spring for Michigan, but two class of 2011 prospects who hold scholarship offers made it to Ann Arbor a week early to see the Wolverines practice.
Akron (Ohio) St. Vincent-St. Mary's Doran Grant was one of those prospects who visited Michigan last weekend.
He is a 5-10, 171-pound cornerback with offers from the likes of Cal, Georgia, LSU, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma and USC. Michigan sent its offer to Grant on the first day juniors were allowed to receive official offers this past September.
Grant has made frequent visits to Michigan for home games and summer camps. This past weekend was his sixth time on the Ann Arbor campus. He attended the Wolverines? spring practice on Friday and was able to evaluate their depth at the cornerback position.
"I see a chance for me to play and that is very important because I want to see the field quick and make an impact my true freshman year," Grant said.
Grant named Ohio State his leader earlier this spring, and they are followed by Michigan State in the second spot. Grant?s father, Ted Jones, played wide receiver for the Spartans in the 1980s and he was already familiar with their program before becoming a recruit.
Grant followed up his visit to Michigan with a drive up the road to East Lansing to see the Spartans practice on Saturday.
Before Grant made his most recent visit to Michigan, the Wolverines were among his top five schools, but last weekend?s trip solidified them as the No. 3 school on his list. He plans to make many more on-campus visits to various college programs and decide sometime later in the process.
