TORRENCE HITS DIAMOND
Canton South High School two-sport star Devon Torrence wasn’t apologizing because he was shagging baseballs in the Arizona summer while the rest of us suffer through an Ohio winter.
Torrence returned last week from an invitation-only baseball showcase in Arizona. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound outfielder in the spring and running back/defensive back in the fall attended the Puma All-American showcase and turned heads with the third-fastest 60-yard dash time. Torrence was one of 250 high school players in the country chosen as a Puma Preseason All-American. He is one of the country’s top 30 prospects.
“You had to make a team, then you had to be invited back,” Torrence said.
“The first day we ran the 60, took (batting practice) and did drills. The second and third days, we played games.”
Torrence played in two games and went 4-for-6 with a triple, double and three RBIs.
Plenty of major league and college scouts attended. Torrence, a junior at Canton South, could be drafted by a big-league team in 2007. Or he could play football and baseball for a top-25 football program.
“Right now, I’m looking at playing college ball,” Torrence said. “If I get drafted, that’s a plus.”
Illinois Head Coach Ron Zook has offered Torrence a football scholarship and assured him he could play both sports for the Illini. Torrence wants to play both football and baseball in college.
“I’m looking at Ohio State, Notre Dame, Miami (Fla.), Florida State and Illinois,” Torrence said. “They’ve all said I could play both.”
The Buckeyes, with high interest in Torrence as a defensive back, are considered the front-runner if an early offer is in the making.
“It’s important to be close to home, but if the schools I want don’t pick me up, I’ll probably go out of state,” Torrence said. “I liked the palm trees in Arizona. I loved the weather. Climate could play a role in my decision, too.”
Word is Canton South’s new head coach Moe Daniska will use a variation of the spread offense to get the ball in Torrence’s hands more. Torrence said there is no truth to the rumor he would play quarterback.
“I’m not a quarterback, but there is something like that ... a little wrinkle in there,” he said. “You could see me at wide receiver, running back or defensive back.
