RECORDS: Louisville 5-0, 2-0; Canton South 2-3, 0-2.
LAST WEEK: Louisville 45, Marlington 21; Alliance 34, Canton South 16.
LAST MEETING: Louisville won 34-28 last year.
WHAT TO WATCH: With two early NBC losses, Canton South’s league title hopes are slim. A push toward the playoffs, however, has to begin this week. The Wildcats are only five spots from a postseason berth in Division III, Region 11, and a win over the Leopards with all their computer points would vault Canton South right back into the thick of things. For that to happen, South must get junior TB Devon Torrence into some open space — a difficult task against maybe the best run defense in Stark County, though Louisville will be without MLB Austin Power this week because of a broken bone in his hand. Torrence accounted for 127 yards rushing and another 118 yards receiving last year as the Wildcats nearly came back from a 34-7 deficit. Louisville’s offense is coming off a strong performance. QB Drew Kuhn regularly accounts for 100 yards rushing and passing and is getting everyone else involved, too. Senior RB Brian Whaley had 54 yards and two TDs on eight carries. Also, five different Leopards have at least one catch each of the past three games. All this is made possible by the efforts of a strong offensive line —guards Justin Butterfield and Matt Holbrook, tackles Jared Smith and Jim Elmerick and center Bill Courter.
Louisville 27, Canton South 21 (OT)
CANTON TWP. — Louisville scored 21 points over the final 6:42 of regulation to tie Canton South and then won in overtime at Brechbuhler Stadium, keeping the Leopards a perfect 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the NBC.
Drew Kuhn threw four touchdown passes — three to Bill Poyser — including the game winner in OT. The 5-foot-11, 185-pound senior completed 21-of-36 passes for 328 yards and kicked the game-tying PAT (his first of the year) in regulation.
Ronnie May’s 30-yard TD pass to Aaron Forte gave South (2-4, 0-3) a 21-0 lead with 9:20 to go in the fourth quarter.
Kuhn responded with a 22-yard TD pass to Poyser with 6:42 left that made it 21-7. After forcing a South punt, Kuhn connected with Kyle Smith on a 15-yard scoring strike to make it 21-14 with 4:01 left.
Another South punt gave the ball back to Kuhn, and he delivered with an eight-play, 59-yard drive, capped by Poyser’s 10-yard TD pass with 32 seconds left. Kuhn’s PAT tied the game at 21-21.
South got the ball first in OT and threw an interception.
A 14-yard hook up with Poyser on third-and-12 gave Louisville a first down on the South 8. Three plays later, Kuhn hit Poyser from 7 yards out with the game-winner.
Poyser caught seven passes for 107 yards, while Smith added eight receptions and 203 yards. Kuhn also led Louisville, which hosts Northwest (5-1, 3-0) next week, with 34 rushing yards.
May completed 14-of-26 passes for 202 yards and the TD to Forte. May also rushed for a 4-yard score in the third quarter.
South’s Cory Bourquin had six grabs for 92 yards, and Antwon Ervin added six catches for 81 yards. Devoe Torrence had with 52 yards and a TD on 13 carries.
